  • this is my childhood!

  • Thank you Johnny Appleseed. This is the catchiest song of my childhood.

  • Now I want an Apple! Thank you lord for giving us Johnny Appleseed!

  • Well, he must be good at balancing, cause how the heck can he stand on those limbs and not fall off! If I were him I'd be worrying about falling.

  • we used to sing this at Minnemanka, i remember it with fond memories at Camp, along with POLAR BEAR!!

  • It's funny, when my dad and I first saw this, we were both surprised by this very song. Mostly because Disney rarely ever implemented religious themes into his cartoons outside of Fantasia, so this just caught us off-guard. Still, though, this is a beautiful song and whenever I'm watering flowers, you can bet I sing it to myself.

  • @slashermaster28 It's hard to do Johnny Appleseed without some sort of religious content. The real Johnny Appleseed, John Chapman, was a very religious person even for the age in which he lived. Most of what he did came from his religious convictions.

  • Those are some epic catches.

  • I've always been what you might call a "deeply non-religious" kind of person, but the joy, optimism, and satisfaction overflowing from this Johnny Appleseed piece is still very striking and amazing to me.

  • Hmmm.. Make me crave apples!

  • This is a fine example of animation.

  • Kinda brings tears to your eyes don't it?

  • I started crying watching this. I had Melody Time for VHS as a kid and would watch this almost every day until someone stole this and most of my other Disney tapes. I can't stop watching these now.

  • Too bad people have forgotten to include the higher power (whatever name they may know it by) in their lives. This used to be the commonplace and society was so much better then than it is now. People used to teach their kids how to pray and that facilitated experiences to let them know that there is a higher power who is interested in our lives and will help us make good choices and get through this mortal life of trials and testing. It's never too late to start doing that though.

  • My 4 Year Olde Was (Kinda') Singin' This Song Before We Ate Dinner

    It was a "Li'l ROUGH"

    So It BARELY,

Woke Up Something I Remembred About 40 Years Ago!

It Was This Cartoon But I WASN'T Sure! I Jumped Off the Dinner Table & FOUND This Clip!!!

My 4 Year Olde & Wife Were Unaware of This Cartoon (I Thought) I Remember as My 4 Year Olde Kinda' Struggled With the Lyrics!!!!

We Played This OVER & OVER.,

    Thank You.

  • I know this was posted some time ago, but I felt in the mood to look this song up and remember a simple song of thanks that moves my soul even today. I wish that this song and the other American Fables were far more well known than they are today because these are songs and stories with characters of good character facing obstacles thought to be insurmountable. This is a truly American legend worth telling.

  • Sounds like Dennis Day from The Jack Benny Show.

  • I Go To Summer Camp And We Sing This Before Eating

  • I used to watch this all the time when I was a kid... Sweet memories *-*

  • We used to sing this before we ate anything, happy memories

  • @clueless8556 We still do today, and it is such fun!!

  • I'm so filled right now... I had this album as a child that's been over 43 years ago. My father brought this for me we buried him on today.Watching this on YouTube just warms my heart.. thank you for the memories. Dotrye. W

  • I think we watched this in music class in 4th grade it sounds familiar but I don't remember the footage.

  • who was looking for the "johnny appleseed" song from HBO?

  • a good folk story, and song. you dont have to be religious to appreciate this, religious or not, this story is american history, every country has folk songs, and fables.

  • we sung this at camp before every meal...just the first verse

  • I LOVE Johnny Appleseed! He reminds me of my soon to be brother in law

  • :(

  • Soooo happy to have found this again! What memories. What magic.

How lucky we were as kids to hear this and how lucky we are to understand the message of gratitude.

  • Every time my Brownie unit sang this song, it would rain within the week!

  • how disgustingly gay

  • HE LITTERED!!!

  • strange

  • Johnny Appleseed grew weed not apples that's y he's so happy talkin an singing to animals. Sorry ppl but its true :]

  • @THE818PAYASO people like you give weed a bad name.

  • samantha said it secu

  • I love this song! Yes the Lord's been good to me! :D

  • All the apple trees planted by John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed) were used to make hard cider.

  • damn you spelt jonny wrong

  • it doesn't matter if you believe in God or not.. Just look at how happy he is! can't hurt to feel happy for this Johnny fellow..

  • The real Johnny was a Swedenborgian, closer to a Spiritualist than a Christian as you think of it today -- though they believe very much in Jesus. But no St. Paul! :D They think all good comes from God (thus the song) and to love thy neighbor. It's also a little like Ralph Waldo Emerson's ideas. And there are several heavens and we pass through them like grades in school. Only problem I have with them is they think animals don't have souls/go to heaven. If so, I'm not going there! Jay

  • @TheAtlanticDan Hah, the real Johnny wore a couple of flour sacks and not much else sometimes!

  • Enviromentalism is the new religion!!!

  • the most wholesome song ever :^D

  • An old camp favourite!

  • I really like this ~ it shows how our Sweet Lord is providing not only for those who help themselves; but for all creatures, even the helpless. Even the elephants get their bellies full everyday ~ Thank God!

  • i'm disappointed nobody's made a crazy techno remix of this song yet lol

  • Great = ☺

  • I did a bio.and did johnny appleseed!! he was a very goo apple!!

  • We sing this song at school during grace.

  • 143thousand views .... how

  • I love this song thanks for sharing

  • Thank you for this great video that also gives glory to God!!!!!!!!!!

  • "I owe the Lord so much .... "

    So do I.

  • This song had a reputation when I was young, to bring on rain when you were camping...

It was funny on camping trips to mention "Johnny Appleseed" just to hear the cries of "NOOOOOOO!"

  • What ever happen to Disney Channel? It dont show the old school shows like this anymore. Not even Mickey get a cameo except for his ears as the logo.

  • Thank you so much! This is great!!!

  • @TheAtlanticDan well i dont like seeing people argue personal beliefs period, but yeah it makes me sad too because kids are naturally drawn to this kind of thing. they dont need to see people spitting venom.

  • @TheAtlanticDan lol you've never worn out a pair of socks and shoes?

  • I'm an Indonesian, never heard of this song before I watched Melody Time. I'm in love with this song ^.^

  • ehhhh smiless :)

  • The melody at 0:39 reminds me of "Bushel and a Peck" from guys and dolls.

  • Apple cider was probably safer to drink than the water because of contamination.

  • Oh. My! GOD!!!!! My school district sang this song last year!!! Well, a less religious version of it, anyway

  • One of my favorite praise songs since childhood!

  • Of course he is happy, his apples were all used to make cider!

  • how did he not drop an apple

  • wow

  • Amen!! :D

  • I love this song. I learned it in Boy Scouts. We sang it for grace before meals. I have since taught the song to my daughters, who have been singing it since they were very small. About a year ago, I was very close to getting laid off after a 22 year career. With tears streaming my face, I sang this song all the way home to tell my wife I was about to lose my job. God does provide what we need. I found temp work until a permanent job came along. Not preaching, just sharing my story

  • @TheFredClark1 The power of God hhahaha I'm in a though situation now and my sister said exactly what you said. I hope it turned out the best =)

  • The people who persecute people becauseof their religion show why there is a religion in the first place. It shows values and morales. A person the is ignorant towards those that believe in good and a happy afterlife are the people who rob banks and kill people in the future, because....why not? As long as i dont get caught.

  • Ah~

    Childhood memories...^__^

  • The singer of this Disney song is Dennis Day.

  • lmao, i saw the toon and then heard the voice and they didn't match but its a good scene lol

  • i don't believe in god but sing this song all the time.

  • Also, this makes me want to eat apples. :P

  • Girl scout rumer says that when you sing this song it will rain as hard as can be! Oh crap why did I whach this song! Im an Idoit! Now its going rain SO hard!!!

  • This was Gaston before he turned into an ungrateful, little punk.

  • @EmpressOfNightfall Yeah, he went from a scrawny guy in pioneer times to a burlesque muscular bad guy.

  • My daughter's girl scout troop always sing this for grace before we have our snacks. As well as other songs. But this is our troop's favorite.

  • Animated by Ollie Johnston!

  • Celtic:)♥

  • We used to sing this at Girl Scouts :)

  • I'm not particularly religious but I do know a pretty song when I hear it!

  • He looks like a young Gaston

  • Very fond memories of this tune.

    And that's MY husk!

  • i remember this aw so cute

  • I'm not religious, but I adore this song still.

  • thats when god ruled the waves

  • i heard this on melody time

  • johnny appleseed, conservationist, philanthropist, and visionary. no clear cutting and laying waste to the land, a la paul bunyan.

  • Boy Scout Song... the best one :-)

  • i love it! :)

  • I am a descendant of the great Johnny Chapman.... Love it

  • really?? cool

  • they use to play this on disney channel

  • happy

  • i love Melody Time! this was always my favorite.

  • God is great!

  • The Style of this Cartoon is awesome. The old Disneystyle is the greatest.

  • This video seems accurate in a animated aspect. Appleseed was a missionary and he cared for all things in life. In fact in legend he made a camp-fire at the end of a hollow log in which he intended to pass the night, but finding it occupied by a bear and cubs, he removed his fire to the other end, and slept on the snow in the open air, rather than disturb the bear.

  • This song makes me so happy and thankful :D

  • I'm not a believer but I love this hymn because it is kind and full of gratitude for the small things in life.

  • cool that is cool

  • I haven't heard this since..since I was around 4 years old. jesus. IT'S BEEN ALMOST A DECADE!!! aw, I remember watching Melody Time :')

  • i have this on VHS it is really old. show Little Toot

  • AHHH classic

    such a nice song

  • I love this song! :) we sing it at camp!

  • lol im related to the actual johnny appleseed :] like seriously i swear. no joke. hes real and im related to him. :]

  • ppl plz check out the gumy bear song by the crazy kidz and happy jack by the crazy kidz

  • Walt Disney's Melody Time

  • what movie is this from?

  • Nothing wrong with preaching good religious values. Stuff like this better for children than all the crap that'son nowadays. I mean in my generation we had a lot good stuff growing up. Eg Mr. Dressup in Canada, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. They don't make TV shows like for children these days.

  • I agree with you. I love this song.

  • people who have a problem with religion were usually abused by it, or saw someone abused by it. thats my experience anyway. then again you have people who dont understand religion. its like.. they need someone to validate and put a label on things in order for them to "get it". otherwise it just doesnt exist.

personally i dont see whats wrong with teaching kids good values and to have something to "look forward to" when they die. a lot of cultures believe death is a new beginning :)

  • @Dogote82 Thank you. I wish everyone could understand this. I know the church has done a lot of good but at the same time the church has done A Lot of damage in it's name.

  • @Operaman41 i hate to say the church did damage when it was really the greedy officials leading it, you know? sort of like politics. many many evils have been committed "in the name of God" and that is what causes the rift.

  • @Dogote82 You are so right. I have had an Old Protestant upbringing and it abused me of any religion anywhere. But I can understand that people who had benign experiences, feel quite happy to believe in one god or another and create beautiful and happy music for it. For it is a happy occasion to find peace in one's soul.

  • @Tibetlord Southern baptist here.... was told by my well meaning grandmother that Jesus didnt love little girls who didnt wear clothes(i was a heathen i admit it.. still am) but she was wrong. she meant to protect me from pervs(i was a naked 3 yr old after all) but all it did was give me a complex and low self esteem. But i got over that myself. i didnt blame the religion, just her skewed view of the world and ferociously over protective nature(which was warranted in her generation)

  • because then you start doing stupid things when you think the shit you do here with the life you have now does not matter, thats whats wrong with it. And no i wasnt abused by religion or saw anyone abused by it, i just questioned its validity, its absolution of morality and truth, the assertion that just because a book says so therefore it must be true I could never really understand and those who do understand scare me a bit because ive read the bible and it isnt pretty.

  • @scienceatheism i'm not sure i follow you about "doing stupid things when you think shit you do here doesnt matter.... the whole point is doing things, GOOD things.... are you sure you read the bible or just part of it?

agreed, just because a book says something doesnt make it true. good for you for doing your own research. sorry its so difficult for you to understand though. i've never had a problem with it myself.

  • No ive read it, i know christians just like to stick with the new testament but im sorry the old testament is in the bible as well. No the point is doing good things for the sake of doing good things not expecting an eternal reward for doing good things. I think helping people matter, i think solving problems matter, uncovering truth matters, I think this life matters because we make it matter there is no absolute inherent reason for living we make the reason.

  • @scienceatheism you should read about Pelagius, he was excommunicated for those very same beliefs and several more. i agree with you both and i'm still a Christian. I dont believe you must be a Christian(or any religion) to be a good person. You seem to like to lump all Christians into the same category.. I'm sorry you have such a vehemently closed mind on THAT subject. If you want a religious fight you wont get it from me. i have my beliefs solidified in experience not just just one book.

  • No i dont expect a fight, im just very aggressive in my approach on telling and expressing my opinion to others. And yes i do lump majority of christians in the same boat because the majority are like the very people i speak about, judgmental, hatred with the sprinkle of self righteousness on top of that and its justified because god says so in the bible. You cant preach love and also preach intolerance its one or the other.

  • @scienceatheism and that is where you are wrong and unwilling to admit it. would i be considered judgmental if i said all atheists are cynical mean spirited ass holes because thats all i have had the pleasure of meeting?

you know what happens when you ASS-u-me.... if you dont expect a fight then do not go to places like this and seek out people like me. you're making yourself look like the fool here, not me....

  • yeah well we are all cynical mean spirited assholes and im proud to admit it, because we have to be when you are faced with pure ignorance. I dont care how I look, i frankly dont give a fuck because when there is so much injustice in the hands of the religious, the very people who hi-jacked morality then come at me like they are boy scouts thats when i speak out. Thats when someone should. Anyone.

  • @scienceatheism um... ok but i didnt come AT you. you came at me..... so you can add liar to the aforementioned list because i thought you didnt want a fight? i didnt ask 41 people to like what i had to say.... shrug it off pal, get some fresh air.... you are not going to change me so you might as well give it up. i'm not your personal enemy or whipping boy. keep it up and i will report you for harassment.

  • Im excited, what else am I?

  • I'm an old disney movie fan, but woww I never know this one...

  • i love johny appleseed. i don't really care thats its about religion or anything i just like the song..i think they don't have a lot of cartoons like this any more cause there ar so many beliefs and some ppl r just sensetive about their religion...i think we should just enjoy music

  • true mylilsecret 2004. It's actually ok, at least in my country. I dont know why these days the States are so sensitive about religion and the media are very much provoking these issues.

  • where ru from?da states has gotten to touchy on subjects of religion its really messed up cause anything u say could be seen as politically inncorrect

  • we basically watch American past cartoon like this one + some Japanese. As we grew, I saw changes in American tv show. They are now less emphasizing on moral, reality shows and "bashing each others" culture became hotter, people make joke out of other people. We mostly stay with the Japs tv show, which at least still keep into moral values and at least not "reality shows" everyday ... American next generation tv shows is funny but, for lil kids to watch? hmmm . . . morally degrading.

  • i agree. which makes me glad i have my own collection of movies and cartoons on DVD and VHS. i also dont live in a big city.

its come to the point where people are just plain mean to each other because they have nothing better to do.

lol maybe THEY need to go plant some apple seeds and give their life a little bit of meaning.

  • i agree. people were sensitive about religion for centuries. and i like the old philosophy of "if you dont like it, dont listen" ..and certainly dont force everyone else to stop it just because you dont agree. thats selfishness beyond all reason.

  • This brings back memories of grade school. In 5th grade, we used to sing this as our lunchtime prayer (Catholic school lols).

  • We sang this as our mealtime grace at camp.

I wouldn't have an issue with it, other than we were specifically told in counselor training that we were allowed to discuss religious topics.

  • we sang this song too! ahaha! it wasnt a religious camp though

  • Ours wasn't either - in fact, we were specifically told in counselor training that we weren't allowed to discuss religion with the campers. (And yet, they made us sing grace?)

  • PSYCHO......

  • "the lard is good to me, and so i thank the lard..."

  • I love this song !!!! i have it on my ipod...did u know my grandpa is the voice of johny appleseed...it was made in the 50s and my grandpa was a voice actor

  • I believe your right! It's a sad time we live in.....

  • too bad we can't havee cartoons like this anymore, we have to be politically correct constantly, what happened to loving your god and your country!

  • i'm sure there are PLENTY of religious cartoons like this... on the RELIGIOUS channel - where they should be. (sorry - meant to comment on here - not on your channel)

  • Nothing happened, just do it! You are still free to be who God and your life made you. Just remember to be appropriate for the venue - speak the language your audience knows. In other words, fit in when you have to, to get along and not get stoned by the Pharisees, and share your real self with people you can trust. Survival of the smartest.

  • For a person from Ireland, the tenor sure has a strong Utah accent.

  • From Wikipedia about the singer:

Dennis Day (May 21, 1916 June 22, 1988)[1] [2] [3] born Owen Patrick Eugene McNulty, was an Irish-American singer and radio and television personality. Day was born and raised in New York City, the son of Irish immigrants. Day graduated from Cathedral Preparatory Seminary in New York City, and attended Manhattan College in the Bronx, where he sang in the glee club.
