@jorologo One of the last things I did was check valve clearance and they were in spec. Also, my motor is fuel-injected...will your carby trick work? I'd like to stay with FI.
Have your carby looked at. I think it maybe a worn throttle body causing a vacume leak and over rich burning of fuel. If it is worn replace carby with a Brosal Solex H30/31 PICT after market carby. They are the most popular replacement type.Your Ignition timing is way out too. If you have a Petonix ignitor the only way to set timing is to rev up to 3000rpm and set timing between 28-30degrees BTDC using tacho wired to coil and timing light checking spark plug #1. Petronix can not be set at idle.
Also your valves have to be checked and set.
I think this Bad Boy needs a VW Doctor

Ha! Water huh? In a car cooled by air, with no radiator or waterpump...
Could have been bad cylinder rings, or bad valve seats, or running rich. Hope it's fixed by now!

Did you ever come up with a solution? I have the same problem on a 1973 Type 3 with Fuel Injection...
