I remember this episode. I think FDR was a very good president and helped this country tremulously during his time in office. From getting men back to work with the WPA and Social Security which was a life line for the elderly. Remember that if you were old and couldn't work anymore. You were out in the cold and starved. PEROID. Just watch the grapes of wrath and see how many people lived. But with that said. Archie did make a few valid points too. These early shows were the best!
OK THE U.S. SHOULD GIVE UP POLICING THE WORLD OH THATS RIGHT ENGLAND GAVE UP IN 1918 AND IT GAVE US HITLER OH SORRY SILLY FACTS THEY ARE ALWAYS GETTING IN THE WAY.
Social Security was in its own fund until LBJ ran for his second term. Read his life story he took SS and put it in the General Fund. There were only 15000 troops in Vietnam when Kennedy was in office by 1968 there were over 100,000. I'm not saying that SS has put us 15 trillion in debt. All the wars that we've been in since Korea and spending on Social Programs again that LBJ implemented has caused us to be in debt. A dominoe effect which LBJ helped start with MedicareMedicaid,Welfare, etc.
@WorldTurnBlack Social Security has not put us 15 trillion dollars in debt. Almost 50% of our debt is attributed to Bush era programs like the two wars, Medicare Prescription Drug benefit, and his two tax cuts. All of this unpaid for.
@GeorgiaKev I think Beemanbros is mistaken. A raise in taxes paid for the Vietnam War. Now consider this. The Iraq War and Afghanistan War marked the first time in American history where we entered a war, and did not raise taxes to pay for it. Today, raising taxes is out of the question according to most conservatives. IT'S CLASS WARFARE!!!!
@luvitluvitbaby How could a raise in taxes pay for it. Hell we could raise taxes now and it wouldn't pay for Iraq and Afghanistan and we've only been their for 10 years. We had troops in Cambodia and Vietnam since '55 and the last one's to leave at the Fall of Saigon was in '75 no amount of taxes would have paid for it. We're still paying for it because we haven't been out of debt since Korea. Every time we get our heads above water we are in another war. Politicians get rich in war time
@Beemanbros You wrote"How could a raise in taxes pay for it. Hell we could raise taxes now and it wouldn't pay for Iraq and Afghanistan and we've only been their for 10 years. "
I'm not pulling this out my ass you know. The facts are the facts.
The time to raise taxes wouldn't be now it would have been in 2001 and 2003 when the wars started. You know??? like... we did every time we got into a war before since 1776!
@luvitluvitbaby You forgot we were still paying for the Vietnam war in the 80's when it lasted 20 years. We shouldn't be raising taxes to go into these b.s. wars anyway. We shouldn't be over there we should be protecting our own borders and quit policing the world.
@Beemanbros You're right we shouldn't be raising taxes to go into these b.s. wars, because we shouldn't be waging them in the first place! I agree with on that. We need to stop policing the world!
@luvitluvitbaby Guess who started Medicare the greatest Democrat of all Lyndon B Johnson. Bush sucked he spent too much on a b.s. war. But he didn't spend near as much as LBJ!
@Beemanbros You wrote " Bush sucked he spent too much on a b.s. war. But he didn't spend near as much as LBJ!"
Well, at least LBJ has something to show for it! Medicare is extremely popular, so much so that if any politician would dare imply he or she would vote to repeal it, their political career would be OVER instantly!
Now ask yourself how many people think the Iraq war was a worthwhile venture lol
"(Eleanor Roosevelt" is the one who discovered the coloreds in this country, we didn't even know they were there! And we've been havin' trouble with 'em ever since!"
@WorldTurnBlack It would be nice if conservatives would stop trying to REWRITE history.
1st, Social Security has not added ONE CENT to the federal debt, because it is a pay-as-you-go system that isn't part of the federal budget.
2nd, unemployment skyrocketed from 5% to 25% from '29-'32. During FDR's first term the it came down from 25% to 15%, and only started going back up again--temporarily-- in '37-38 because Congress slashed funding for federal work projects.
@GeorgiaKev That's where you are wrong. Social Security was a good thing when it first started but as we got deeper into the Vietnam War LBJ put it into the General budget because he got us deeper into the war when Kennedy wanted to get us out and its been going down the tubes since. The only reason we got out of the Depression and high unemployment was the war. Many were still poor and unemployed into the 40's.
@Beemanbros I'm not arguing that WWII was the death knell of the Depression, but FDR's policies did help ease the economic pain of the 1930s. As for LBJ raiding S.S. to pay for Vietnam, this is the first I've heard of that. Can you please cite a credible source for this information? Also, the argument that S.S. alone put us $15 trillion into debt is absolutely false. Now that our society has embraced "retirement" since companies refuse to hire the elderly, S.S. is a necessity.
Oh well. Archie's version if history isn't any worse than what they are teaching kids in school now. At least Archie could probably find the states on the map and would know where Iraq and Afghanistan are. Or, maybe I give him too much credit.
What is incredible is that a sitcom scene was written around political debate, debate between two working class characters, discussing history and political context, with the subtext being a fight over a chair. It only shows how in the intervening years the quality and intelligence of writing for television has deteriorated beyond all measure and recognition.
Funny thing is Bea Arthur was a US Marine!!!! She is in the Marine museum at Parris Island. Archie was right, Roosevelt was a progressive and you see what the socialist are doing to our country now!!!!
