Thanks you SO MUCH for your Brumberg posts! His playing is awesome. This version makes all other ones sound pale. I think I'll be listening to his playing a lot from now on... all best wishes.
I think this one is more downright disturbing than the first one, the first one being more on the dramatic side. Completely different mood. The third one is completely different in it's own right, being more dreamy and impressionistic.
Merrier and more danceable than the first waltz, and with somewhat playful passages - which the first one lacks completely - this waltz, IMO, cannot be called better; I'd rather say that both pieces evoke two different spirits, but obviously linked by obscurity and madness. Both of them are technically and structurally and harmonically compelling and interesting, so it depends on tastes.
I love this piece! It's a shame that it isn't performed more often (the same goes for the equally great Mephisto Waltz no. 3). This is an interesting performance - very different in many places from the score I have and from the other recordings I've heard, but I like it!
this version departs in several places from the standard one (you can look up sofronitsky's for instance) but i like it better, but cannot find any music! do you know if it actually is a separate edition by Liszt or if Brumberg is adding his own stuff?
unlike the majority of the people (i assume as there is like a million to one ratio of recordings of the first one to the second) i enjoy this one about 3 times more.
Exactly! I started to play the 3rd! So beautiful. Liszt's harmony is so advanced. I love playing things people rarely play. I posted a lot of common tunes because, then people can easily see how I see music. But we should not also forsake the little and large unknown gems of music! Thanks :)
Such a wonderful artist, maybe you don't want to talk about it but I can't help beeing curious about what he was like as a teacher. Did you study with him a long time?
