When you do them like that, you can't really absorb any of the impact with your hands.

So that's useless if you land straight into a roll from high. (Which is rare though).

@Od3ri What do you mean? His hands stretching out? I'm pretty sure that's for practicing purpose only - when you roll from a high distance, you don't really put your hands out but you just do the roll.
