i use sm58 too, but lately i get hum, dunno why! I dont use mixer now, i use usb converter...i am dissapointed, it worked well, perfect before, i thought it was picking up air con or computer vents, but it did not
What you showed was NOT the diaphragm! The grey piece that you see when you take off the grille is just a layer of foam. The diaphragm lives underneath. Learn your mics!
@blink0618 Oh dearly me - I am sorry - and with that I think it's time to close down comments on this video - you can always find me at podcastingadvisor (dot) com - so long folks
Would you say this microphone nearly captures 100% of the natural/actual sound as you would hear it in real life? And also what's the pop-filter made of?
I actually do the same thing (pop filter with sm58). Makes a tremendous difference. The built in grill helps but a pop filter is unfortunately necessary for better vocal recording in the studio.
praising the shure sm58 is archaic thought from decades ago.... the big boys have all the money in the world and they still choose it! they say cause it's tough, i say a fragile mic isn't a problem if the singer lays off the cocaine! ever hear a live performance sung through a earthworks sr20??? industry standards are a joke...
LOL, pointless using the pop filter ? 2:55 he showed why he is using it, and for me, there was a LOT of difference, it is wasy better with the filter, also this is a 100 dollar mic, the filter inside it is not the best, so, i don't think it's pointless to use pop filter
@alittlerock Never used the Rode so can't give an authoritative answer. You'll probably get different answers depending who you ask - it's a personal thing to a lot of folks.
The SM58 and 57 actually have the same capsule, just a different cover. If you want that "SM57" sound, just take off the ball on the 58. Great for recording snares, but you could in fact mic your whole kit with this. You still need a couple of condensers to get a good overhead/cymbal sound.
@RunningForLast Check out the LD systems d1027 drum mic set, I'm using it, and it's very good. If you want some audio examples, check out some of my videos that are recorded with those mics.
Hi there, my mum just bought a 5.1ch Digital Speech Control Amplifier (AMP-510USB), and i just realised that there is where i can plug a mic into, so am wondering wether if i bought a shure sm58 it would work.
I just want to find out if the shure sm58 would work with the amplifier described above, thanks.
he pretty much demonstrated how it isn't pointless. A foam windscreen tends to work for most things, but for things like podcasting and broadcast, a mesh popkiller is a really great thing to have.
Hi i recently bought a SM58 mic, i am using it for vocals on songs and so on, i however am having problems with it, the quality of the recording sounds poor and distant, the "SSS" sounds come out sounding like "THH" sounds and i am not sure what to do, spent a lot of money on it so i don't want it to have been i waste. Is there any equipment or can you just plug and play into your computer? thanks
Hi - what are you currently using to plug it into your computer? The SM58 has an XLR connector output (those 3 big pins). Are you using a cable that ends in a 3.5mm jack (like the one your headphones have)? If so you might be better off with a USB interface or a mixer that has a built in pre-amp.
@PSYCHOsPHILOSOPHY Google "Edirol UA-25EX" - that's what I use - the pre amps are built in, it can accommodate 2 XLR or 1/4 inch inputs and has a built in compressor - there may be cheaper alternatives though - have a Google round
@thepodfather I have the Edirol UA-25EX, it only allows you to record 2 tracks simultaneously, correct? because it only has two inputs, I'm new to interfaces so any help would be much appreciated.
I have more or less the same problem as PSYCHOsPHILOSOPHY... I bought an SM 58 and I bought the M-Audio fast track pro interface with it...however no sound output is coming out...I downloaded the drivers but to no avail...by any chance can you give me the procedures I have to do to connect to the computer please? Do I have to connect some other cables or jacks with the interface?
I got one of these of my mother.. but it felt down a lot of times and that thing that filters it a bit inside of the microphone is missing....... is it possible to fix everything? I can still record etc. but when i directly put it into the computer input it doesnt really sound that good. How can i use it for recording with my pc?
i use sm58 too, but lately i get hum, dunno why! I dont use mixer now, i use usb converter...i am dissapointed, it worked well, perfect before, i thought it was picking up air con or computer vents, but it did not

Hey thanks for the vid i learned a lot. I have 2 Questions though.
!. How well does the 58 record drums. I don't yet have enough sm57s to mic my whole kit with them and i'm thinking about using these.
2. Does this mic need fantom power? and if it dosn't then will i blow it up if i give it Fantom Power?
RunningForLast 1 year ago
@RunningForLast Not being a musician (I'm a podcaster) not sure - you can get specialised drum mic kits so maybe they're best.
thepodfather 1 year ago
@RunningForLast Sorry - forgot part 2 of your question. No need for phantom power on the SM58 which is a dynamic mic - only condenser mics need this.

SM 58`s are brilliant but the Sure beta58A is just that little bit better! Or correct me if am wrong.

Hey bud no need for a pop filter on the sm58 its got foam under the grill and above the mic itself. so a pop filter on it is pointless.
