  • why do this ?? ryan brown

  • @UniqueProductions101, Its preventative maintenance, this machine works under huge pressures. The hull is a pressure vessel, same as a pressurized aircraft or a gas bottle for that matter, each time you climb/decend, fill/empty this is called a "cycle" the more cycles, the more stress on the material, because it is actually getting flexed each cycle, this will eventually lead to metal fatique and failure, so we inspect it all the time and all other systems as well, then we don't have breakdowns

  • Tough Sub 44 years in service!

I love it when they resort to brute force and 2X4's LOL

  • ah titanium even better lol. and as for going to the bottom in alvin call me what you want but id be to afraid to. but i think if i had the oprotunity i would say yes lol

  • Lol, I'd be affraid too. At just one mile under the surface of the ocean the depth pressure is around 2,300 psi. Alvin dives much deeper than that.

  • I'd be fascinated, I'd be looking out the portholes the entire time.

granted, I've been a science nerd my entire life....

  • wow i never knew the the thing that you got into was a steel ball cool

  • They are actually all made of titanium.

  • it kind of has to be a ball, nothing else holds pressure nearly as well. underwater any air pocket is subjected to extreme pressure at depth, any edges and they'd be DEAD.

  • hey does any body know the name of the sub the one that looks like a giant glass ball

  • Alvin the first sub to go down to the Titanic.

  • I want to go undersea in Alvin or its successor someday - that would be fun to film.

  • I work for WHOI.

  • very cool :)

  • amazing
