The conductor's view of this piece is 'way better than many of his Anglo colleagues - Bravo!! A tad rushed at the end, but still - Saint-Saens would have been proud. Latry's registrations: Ditto. And in the event you think he was letting the full organ go at the end - you weren't hearing 1/2 of what that organ has. But it was *CORRECT* for the performance at hand. A wonderful performance all around. Thank you for posting it!
Wonderfully musical interpretation of this piece. I love how the conductor pulls the tempo back at 7-00... really enhances the power and heaviness of the final passage.
Fewer than 1% of human beings have heard this Masterpiece while in a large shower enclosure. My wife and I installed into our dream home (after 46 years of honest labor) a custom-built analogue tube Quad-Tower (waterproof) that enables a better-than-full-body-orgasm experience. There are only 16 compositions that are authentically rich enough to reach the alpha-state of glorious splendor that tends to overwhelm the soul, completely.
Less than 1% have control of more than 99% of the enclosed shower sound systems, huh? I think you're on to something. Occupy Shower: 2012!! This time, we will be heard.
I love French Orchestras, for some unknown reason they rarely feature in lists of "world's finest" must be some bias there as both the Orchestre de Paris and the Radio Philharmonic are as good as any from what I have heard, both live and on recordings!! Thanks for this posting.
Isn't the initial theme "A mighty fortress is our God"? I just researched both very hastily, so I might've missed it, but I've seen no mention of this--yet it sounds almost exactly the same to me, especially the organ part.
Always a stirring piece but this performance stands among the best I have heard. Sometimes borrowed (Scott Fitzgerald & Yvonne Keeley, and for the movie Babe) but this is the original. Listen to the whole work; it moves from eerie through sublime to superb and that first organ chord in the final movement shakes even the sturdiest of halls.
This is one of my favourite symphonies, it's just plain brilliant. This movement just releases all the energy building up in the first three making it I think one of the most cathartic moments in symphonic literature.
That being said, Justin Bieber can go fuck himself.
Having a French mother have been a Saint Saens fan since childhood so with a French orchestra what could be better. Dad was English so the Albert Hall was a regular. A great combination.
@whiskytangofoxtrot1 Try the Colin Davis, Berlioz Requiem, (BBC Proms 2000) on you tube, the quality is of the same high standard. As for the music, it's in a difference league, as good as the Saint Seans might be.
really splendid performance! The dirigent did outlined many details which don't appear in this manner in many other recordings, well in my own experience. The speed was rather "moderate". Also, organist M. Latry, superb, without words.
Saint Saens is by far by most favourite composers of all. He has such passion, I love how he teases you with little snippets of what are about to come, and then suddenly a big crescendo of glory, his music makes me cry and shake with emotion, what a man!!! fanstastic orchestra, great video clip, been wanting to see this live forever and a day!
Saint Saens is by far by most favourite composers of all. He has such passion, I love how he teases you with little snippets of what are about to come, and then suddenly a big crescendo of glory, his music makes me cry and shake with emotion, what a man!!!
Bet Simon Cowell wouldn't recognise this if it hit him in the face. It thoroughly annoys me to hear him and the rest of the X Factor judges banging on about the 'talent' their useless singers have. Ugh.
Wonderful. Lots of good versions of you tube but this is right there with the best.I sometimes wonder if Saint-Saens decided to wake the audience up with that massive chord which heralds the finale. Who knows? Anyway it remains one of my favourite pieces of music.
I wa there ! This brings it all back quite extraordinary experience. The organ is a behemoth that has to be heard for real to really appreciate, no speakers will ever do it justice. Bust this come quite close.
Thanks for allowing us to do it over and over again !
As it stands, while they're playing their hearts out, it all feels a bit of a let-down compared to what other YouTube clips featuring the Cavaillé-Coll organs of St. Ouen of Rouen or Notre-Dame de Paris make available... Sad as otherwise this is 5/5...
Yes, excellent performance beyond question!! Alas, the sound level after the first 2 minutes is too low, while the organ feels too restrained and polished (also, is the orchestra a bit underpowered? - I see only 4 or 5 double-basses where there should be at least 8?!). Granted that it should blend with the orchestra as a member thereof and not stand out (this is a symphony, NOT a concerto!!!), I wish that the organ's reeds were more present. I'm hearing too much foundation and mixture-tone.
Lovely, lovely, lovely! Love that last chord - bet the RAH rattled to that open 32' diapason bass pipe! (Bet last movement of the Mahler 8 on first night of Proms 2010 would have been just as fab!)
I willingly concede my bias as a trumpet player, but there is something special with a piece of music where the brass enter and really show you that they are there - Saint-Saens is one of the finest piano/organo composers/players there will ever be, but my God he let the brass show off!
Great performance :D Nothing compares to hearing this live. My University's orchestra did this movement for the postlude at church once. I almost cried when the organist yanked out that 32' diapason for the final chord. Amazingly huge, gorgeous sound.
