  • This is just great! I have been listening to steely dan for 20 years and this sound just great Best I have heard on the web so far.

  • Expertly played - not an easy task for any guitarist, unless you're Guthrie Govan!

  • Hank... just fantastic. I've been watching this everyday for over a month. Your ability to switch gears between Carlton, Baxter, Dias, Beckett, etc.,... just awe inspiring. I have yet to learn even one of these solos....

  • The kid charlamain solo always gave me wood. The genius behind it is awesome

  • yea this is as good as it gets on git solos. The best of the best

  • Thanks Odnog, glad you enjoyed! I never thought of that last point, but that's very true!

  • Hank:

As a long time SD fan I am thrilled that you came up with this SD best of lead guitar solo medley. It really showcases your superb guitar playing skills while highlighting the brilliance of the original performances coaxed from Mssrs Fagen and Becker. It is also one of the best portals for introducing a whole new generation of listeners to Steely Dan and a master lesson on playing lead Jazz guitar.

Keep up the great work and thanks again.

  • Wow, that was just amazing. I loved the extra minute of Kid Charlemagne you did at the end!

  • Now I have to go and clean up.

  • Hank,

These covers of solos are usually awful but I was pleasently surprised by your passage of music here. Things that stood out were the tone and the smoothness of your playing, fretting and picking hand had were lockied in to the groove very nicely.

How much of that as a percentage was improv.

    Cheers

    Jon

  • Absolutely awesome! Would love to hear you do the ending solo from FM!

  • PLEASE come and tour merry england,we need YOU!!!!

  • Wow that GK sounds killer. Nice axe as well. And stellar playing...

  • Thats just pretty work!! And all that funny talk about how "easy" it is "just" to copy....please - this is not "just copy" - it is clear that Mr. Hank Easton knows what to do!! Thanks for the music!!

    Jan - Denmark

  • It's an early 80's Ibanez Artist. The amp is a Mos Valve with an 80's GK guitar preamp an a couple EV 12" open back speakers. All the overdrive and clean tones are from the GK.

  • Hank...would you be kind enough to comment on the gear,,,amp..pedals. I don't recognize the ES335 like guitar (looks thicker with sharper horns). Thanks in advance for your reply.

  • not one of my favs, sorry!!

  • No Bodhisattva???

  • whats the song at 1:51??? i cant believe ive never heard of steely dan before, on the other hand im 16 and sadly my generation doesnt really appreciate this type of music..

  • @usersongs That's 'My Old School' I believe. And I'm 19, and I know plenty of people my age who appreciate the Dan, you just have to know where to find 'em ;).

  • Good grief! Man, I grew up listening to all of those solos, and to hear them played back-to-back with your own touch added to them was a real treat!

  • SPOT on! Great stuff to nail all those tough solos in one go!

  • Thanks Hank!

  • What, no Bodhisattva? That's the solo that separates the men from the boys! But great playing anyway!

  • Its exellent to learn solos from the greats note for note....once you master it it gives you the insight....its almost like the person that your trying to copy had just given you a lesson or piece of advice...its crazy. However the goal of every musician should strive to have their own unique sound. Its so sad to know a musician that is too afraid to do their own thing or to step outside the box and take a chance...music is life..ups and downs...blues...madness and risk that pushes u

  • Not quite sure what is being said here, but if this post is meant to suggest that somehow Hank Easton does not strive to have his own unique sound, the author is just sadly mistaken. Hank has the ability to reproduce sounds that he likes, which is a treat for us guitar aficionados, but he also has an amazing repertoire of his own compositions and a boatload of tasty sounds in his bag of tricks. I encourage this person not to go mad, but to check out some of Hank's original stuff!

  • @Karlsbad57 Oh I was mainly just talking...I wasnt keeping up with the blog or anything I was just commenting on musicianship in general....same aspects as what you are commenting on just not directed towards anyone in particular

  • I think this guy sums up every Guitar solo I ever loved in my life.

  • Nice work, missed a few bends, and you were late on the Charlemagne solo, needed dirty tone on Dont Take Me Alive, but overall a very ambitious effort from you and the band, that was very entertaining

  • @flowerdrop1 And we will be looking for YOUR video with the suggested improvements made.

  • amazing tribute to some of the best music and players ever.

  • Hey Hank, That was brilliantly excecuted and a pure pleasure to listen to. Your passion really comes through the music. A lot of heart and soul went into this for sure...you went way beyond playing the right notes, you really captured the essence of the vibe and feel of each solo, nothing "souless" about it at all, like some of these critics on here claim...

  • As a big fan of Steely Dan I absolutely loved the tribute and have watched it several times since stumbling on it a week ago. If you want to get into a debate about creativity - everything is derivative and builds on what comes before. But as Hank points out - that is not what this clip is about - so get over yourselves lads.

  • Hey Hank, thanks for this video, i enjoyed it very much. @wittner, I've seen misguided comments before, but you've reached a level of irrelevancy that I've never seen. Hank is obviously an uncommonly talented individual... unless you can do better, you shouldn't criticize.

  • Bravo! You kick ass Hank!!

  • VERY NICE...smooooth============~~~~~

  • man its great guitar playing and not so good camera work ////keep the focus on the fretboard paaalease !!!

  • It's all good...Thanks for recreating perfection.

  • Er is there a problem here? Hank if you have children show them how to do this. If not set up some sort of school. When I see a band as I did the Dan in 96 I don't expect CD fidelity but with the Dan anything else pulls up a tad short.

  • Awesome stuff, thanks a lot for sharing this, My only complaint is no Night by Night.

  • Hank,

Just want to say great work and many thanks! I've just started learning to play and can appreciate all the years and work that has gone into your craft. Keep rockin', and you're ever here on the east coast around NC, expect me to be in attendance.

  • Hank,

Thanks for playing these Steely Dan tunes with The Steely Damned over all these years. We've seen your show many times and it never gets old. You are awesome! I hope you guys keep playing the Steely Damned gigs. Just caught your recent show at the Belly Up and it was great. Thanks!

  • Thrilling!

  • Very enjoyable . thanks for sharing .. sounds like you are having fun too .

  • Great great great. God loves your fingers and your ears (although that's from a man with little religion!). If I was Jon Herrington I'd be worried.

  • sorrrrry to a party pooper, the gtr player is obviously a good player but thers just no life in any of that this lot would be better suited to autem leaves etc

  • An impressive bravura performance of guitar dexterity and reverse engineering.

  • i actually like the 1st kid charlemagne solo, rikki dont lose that number & bad sneakers better than the originals :D lol

  • @kell1reilly2

Kell1 Now that you mentioned it that is the name(Georg) that I found months ago when I was curious who played the solo. It's such a great solo< I listen over and over wishing I could do it.I'll have to settle for my Air version I guess Lol.Thanks for the info

  • @joemizzi1 no prob. and yeah its great. i actually edited the entire song itself on my itunes so it starts just as the solo begins, & i made that my ringtone of my cell phone lol. so now i have both the regular live version & my edited version on my itunes.

someone had posted steely dan playing in nashville, TN, in 1993 (it was recorded professionally, so no hand-held cameras from the audience) & that was when zingg played with them. but those vids were taken down shortly after :(

  • @kell1reilly2 I bought the cd about two yrs.ago and liked what they did with Reelin in the Years etc..,but the Peg solo is what made me go Wow from the first time I heard it.I've always been a Beatles fan,but Steely Dan is the only group I can play first song on thru without wanting to skip a song, where there are some Beatles songs I can live without.I finally got to see them in Vegas last year ,it was great and hope to see them again when they come back.

  • Hank, you are wired differently than 99% of us guitarists. Absolutely stunning virtuosity, especially since these solos are so complex. Thanks for sharing this inspirational video. Hope you find a way to perform on the east coast.

  • I cant say what an absolute treat this was. I am just getting into the unique solos of SD after listening to them all of my life and to hear them covered so expertly in one video is nirvana.

  • killer!

  • sweet.............just fucking sweet man

  • You are mr.335!

  • ive watched this video hundreds of times over the last couple years & its absolutely incredible. i personally like the first kid charlemagne solo better than the original version :D great work, seriously

  • Hank thank you for doing this, and doing it so beautifully.

    Please play live more!

  • Fantastic! Loved it when you went into 'Reelin' In the Years'... very cool. I had to break out the album and listen to whole thing after this, lol.

  • this has to be my most favourite guitar solo medley i've ever seen, way to go, hank.

  • You guys are freakin awesome!!! Great Guitar playing with a great band.

  • Man-o-man! Hank Got Tone! The rhodes piano is spot on to boot. Are you sure Donald Fagen isnt backstage somewhere? Im bookmarking this one. Stunning..

  • Dude, not an ES 335. Not a Gibson. Nice job Hank.

  • Very good I realy enjoyed, Nice band too.

  • This is great Hank-Thank you. This may be note for note but I like your "My Old School" better than the original.

  • Excellent! I thoroughly enjoyed this.

  • Great job, Hank. First two off the taxi rank are both Larry Carlton staples.....love the beautiful ES-335, man.

  • Hank u did a good job no matter what anyboys says. It takes a lot of skill 2 play that good , and every guitar player that ever strapped on a 6 string started by looking up 2 other great ax slingers themselves! Nuff said!!

  • If the Steely Dan guitar solos are the "holy grail" of Jazz-Rock guitar playing,

this cat is "Percival". Simply KILLER guitar playing.

    Tone, phrasing, gear....EVERYTHING.

    Very impressive, very impressive indeed....

  • All I will say is you da man Hank !!!!!!!!!!!

  • cant stand the distortion but thats cause my favourite liste nis grateful dead 93-95, anywas the keyboard in this is perfect to my taste, thanks

  • Nailed it! Thanks for sharing you friggin Rock!

  • Not bad. Long live Hank Easton.

  • Big compliment! Great. Camera work a bit unnerving.

  • Simply superb

  • That was the best 8 mins of my life. AMAZING!!! Real Music!

  • absolutely flipping brilliant great bloody solos all mo cheoill thu a bhuchaill !!

  • Somewhat hyperbolic there old boy?? but yes the chap has some skills. So......a Brel fan, eh?? What is it with these Belgians . eh??

  • Comment removed

  • why ya take yer repl;y down??? it was funny....

  • what a sweet compilation and some VERY nice playing indeed !! Very well done !!

  • holy shit man! you must have put in countless hours to get these solos down. it definitely shows. kick ass job!!!

  • Totally awesome and amazing! Unreal! What a talent!

  • Can't tell you how many times I've air guitar'd these solo's in my car ,in the shower etc...TMI?Great job Hank

  • You all must remember the guitarists who went into these Steely Dan sessions in the first place had a blank canvas on which to paint their brilliant solos. Reproducing them note for note is a sign of manual dexrterity on the guitar not ceativity. Ok he nails the tone pretty good but he had a tone to aim at in the 1st place. That's what seperates the greats from just very good guitarists like Hank. Guys like Drew Zing, Wayne Krantz and John Herrington will never reproduce others solos excatly.

  • Look, this is a tribute number to what I feel are some of the most inspirartion guitar solos of all time. Sure I could play my own, what would be the point of this piece if I did that?? To show people I can solo over changes? People that follow my original work can hear plenty of me doing that. Also, as great as all Steely Dan's players are, you can't beat or compete with perfection, which is what these solos are to me. HE

  • Well said Hank. I am aware that what you are doing here is no mean feat. It's just that even the Dan themselves don't play their own songs as the record, preferring to let the music breathe and the musicians improv a little. I just find Dan tribute bands to be a bit 'anorak' and anal about the music but at the same time I know that comes from respect for the music which is what as youv'e said this piece is about. I am sure a player of your calibre can improv. No offence intended from me.

  • One thing I don't like about listening to S.D. live is that I feel (in my opinion) that the solos by Herrington et al don't live up to the studio work. They are certainly great guitarists, but the solos are part of the life blood of the tunes as we came to know them, and a big part of why we loved them. I love this clip in that it reproduces the sound and "fit" that these had within the context of the original recordings. Improv sometimes messes up a good song.

  • Hank, you the man Baby!

  • Hank, I think you proved your point with the Kid Charlemagne outro - you started out with the studio version note-for-note, but then proceeded to kick ass with your own improv. Excellent stuff, man!

Reminded me of Larry Carlton's live show where he goes through a medley of all of his famous solos.

  • @hankeaston absolutely right, sir. superb playing throughout and the tail end of the second Charlemagne solo was just burning (and original), if i do say so myself. good job, man.

  • @hankeaston Well said. I find this video to be very instructive and encouraging. One more thing to add...to answer the fellow who called you very good (at least :-) Let's not forget you are entertaining...filling up the minutes for the paying guests by taking them somewhere familiar. ETC. Keep up the great, great playing Hank.

  • @hankeaston I think this is a cool video man! I play in a Steely Dan tribute too and these solos kicked my ass in the beginning so I know just how hard it is to play them even though they sound easy at first. Nicely done! 5 stars to you Mr Easton, by the way I think that you should be the next guitarist for Steely Dan, I'm cheering for you.

  • Wouldn't it have been a little easier to just say "Well done."?

  • Listen to some of the other stuff he has on this site, like his rearrangement of Ave Maria, an acoustic piece from the 1800's arranged for electric, or maybe his original Orange Roughy.

  • could nt agree more man the steely dan guitar solos are what really set all their albums apart . brilliant songs absolutely enhanced and brought to perfection by some of the best session men of all time . hard to pick the best but my old school. and kid charlemagne close to top and what about king of the world

  • @wiltner You've got no place at all to separate this hank guy from any other guitarist. You've simply watched a video of him playing leads perfectly note for note. That show's he got a good ear. Now, what makes you sure hank here doesn't add his own swing to other solo's? I personally like to perfect a song before I add my own thing to it. Maybe the only thing separating great from good is your Ignorant opinion.

  • @Fhey1337 the point I was making here is I am sure Hank and me and many others would like to achieve international fame and recognition as musicians. You have to find your own 'voice' to be in with a chance of doing that. This is not the way to do it is all I am saying. I took Hanks point that it is a tribute piece and a damn fine one at that.

  • Comment removed

  • @tdarnold ???

  • @wiltner The solo on Peg by Drew Zing(Alive in America) is incredible

  • @joemizzi1 yes it is joemizz1. I am hoping he is on the tour with Boz, Michael and Donald. He has MD'd Boz and Steely Dan's gig already so he knows those two really well. We'll see. There is not enough of Drew Zingg around.

  • @joemizzi1 that wasnt drew zingg who did the solo in that particular performance. it was georg wadenius (and no, theres no 'e' at the end of his first name lol). zingg was with them in '93, but in '94, wadenius joined SD.

shame. most dan fans recognize zingg...but wadenius was the one who played the live solos on peg & reelin' in the years on AIA.

  • @wiltner Get off your high horse wiltner! This is a fantastic tribute and very entertaining. Lighten up!

  • @wiltner lol . . like you are going to tell this guy anything about guitar playing or music?

You're a critic, I get it . . but I don't think Hank or anyone else cares that you think

he is a "very good guitarist". Don't think he needs your approval.

If you played guitar then you'd know how difficult playing these solos are.

Besides, all the "greats" learned exactly the same way : transcribing solos.

And he put all these solos in a medley, which was quite musical.

  • @GaryNull I am not a critic. I'm a pro guitar player, composer.

  • That must've been so satisfying playing those! so well played too!

  • That was excellent.

I do miss the horns during the "My Old School" solo, though. ;)

  • Amazing player, truly blessed! I was wondering if Steely Dan has contacted you to play as their replacement players cannot hold a candle to YOU! A joy to watch and listen.

  • are you serious? when the dan plays live these days, they want their soloists to improvise the "essence" of the recorded solo, not just copy it note-for-note. i doubt this guy could do any good improvising on these riffs.

  • I dunno, his improvising over the outro solo from Kid Charlemagne sounded pretty good to me.

  • have you heard jon herrington?

  • Nice!

  • HANK is AMAZING. Seen him LIVE with the Steely Dammed, quite a few times (lucky me). Amazing group and a great time LIVE. Dancing up close checking out Hanks fingers, And yes one thing is hitting the notes but the feel and the tone is just PERFECTION.

  • I haven't had so many chills up and down my spine in that short amount of time in a looong while. Wow that was incredible.

In addition to the excellent performance, extra kudos for nailing the exact guitar tone of each solo - no easy feat in itself especially live!. Great job!!

  • Got everything note-by-note perfect !! Steely Dan ain't easy to play ; you're a hell of a guitarist !

  • Super jeu et super choix... Juste ce qui se fait de mieux en matière de guitare dans cette branche de musique, le must des must.. Bravo!

  • Great stuff. Love it! Bring back guitar solos to pop music. I miss the 70s...

  • Great job..about the best copies I have ever heard..but it would be nice if the band actually played the songs all the way through-just an opinion.

  • hank, I love your guitar!

I own an ibanez LR10 1980 model, pretty similar to the AS200, i use it for everything. ur AS even has the input jack repair exactly like scofeilds, u guys havent been sharing guitars have you? haha

  • Hank - cool concept! I've never seen the Steely Dammed. Quit going to see indoor live music back in '83 because of tinnitus.(Ended my music career )Still play for fun and teach guitar and bass.

  • One Hell Of A Player.

  • That Kid Charlemagne solo is one of my all time favorites in any genre. So melodic!

  • one more thing haha.. when he busts into my old school ( my fav solo from the bunch) it sounds different from the real one?? but i like this one the best is there anywhere i could find tabs or something for that solo?

  • the story goes that my old school was played on a very unique guitar that had a different sound. the story goes that denny dias (sp?) picked it up and hated it but then jeff baxter picked it up and played the solo. i think that's pretty close to the story.

  • oh man.. that was amazing,, i know you didn't make the solos but that was intense.. Has completely changed my view on soloing.. Now i just need to learn way more theory so i can have more control of the neck!

  • yeah!

    *favorited!*

  • this is pretty win

    5'd

  • that means i like it

  • yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

  • That is shredding!!! with taste

  • Great guitar work. Too bad the camera operator didn't know shite about filming a live guitar player. :-/

  • This was Great! None of that Shreding Junk. This was Real guitar Playing.

  • LOOK AT HANKS FINGERS! no wonder why he rules

  • AWESOME Hank!!! your guitar vibe sends chills down my spine.

  • that's how babies are made

  • agreed. Love the Dan but there's something soul-less about this

  • Soul-less?!?!?! Do you not see his ridiculous face changes? That's soul.

  • amazing

    absolutely

    and proof

    to all you shredding obsessors

you can HAVE A GOOD SOLO WITHOUT SHREDDING

    amazing job dude

  • no, thats impossible

  • i hope your not serious dude

  • lol, of course not. Im all for people who want to play fast all the time, but speed is only one of many factors that contribute to great guitar playing

  • you are on the money speed has not a thing to do with skill...its albout feeling..one must know when to pick fast and when to hold a note...tone and soul its wht its all about..

  • Absolutely spot-on mate...the present day obsession with "Shredding" leaves me cold-where on earth has the Music gone, soul is the very essence of music.

  • Exact?

    Didn't seem so.

    Amazing?

    Absolutely.

  • NICE!

  • Great playing Hank! I've been SD fan since I was in jr. high. You honor Skunk, Denny Dias, Jay Graydon, Larry Carlton and all the SD soloists.

  • I forgot to mention Rick Derringer and Mark Knopfler...so many great guitarists!

  • Wow. That was incredible! I've been a Dan fan ( and Larry Carlton fan) for more than 35 years and that playing was as close as I've ever heard to the real deal. If I had not seen the video I would have sworn the guitar work was was SD. Been playing almost as long in my basement but never came close to that level of replication. Awesome beyond words.

  • I hope they hire you for the next tour. You could certainly cut the gig!

  • oh, man: just ni-i-ice.

  • Its a wonderful solos!

    Its really SUCH awesome!!!

    Thxs,my dear Randall!!! lol

    xoxos

    JULIA

  • Beautiful work here. Thank you very much for sharing this with me. Peace.

  • !!! --- awesome little piece here :) thx again, just can't seem to stop watching it, and i'm supposed to be working ??? oh, such is our life in the Kingdom of DAN !!!

  • fabulous solo piece, Skunk, Walter, all of them and Larry would hugley be proud of this, all of Steely, as Fagen and Becker said as well !!! thank you, Hank in all of your work. Favorites list ... beaming Light !!

  • Hi R,

Thanks so much for all your e-mails, they are greatly appreciated! They are amazing solos that influenced me alot as a player, so I figured it would be a nice homage to all of them, putting together a medley like this. Glad you like it. Hopefully I'll see you at one of my shows sometime. HE

  • Well...I've heard some good players doing the Steely Dan thing...but this is perfect...you must have worked very hard to listen for each nuance. And the Axe you chose is like a super 335!

  • also, I really want to know how to strum like you do in the rikki don't lose that number solo, it sounds so fluid and rhythmic

  • It's like eating only dessert. Delicious!

  • EXACTLY!

  • I keep listening to this over and over, can't get enough... keep up the great work

  • very good-well done-absolutely dantastic

  • What a great idea. Well done on all the work.

  • Being a "Dan" fan since the 1970's, I appreciate these musicians. This is absolutely great stuff.

  • All you haters out there are friggin losers, THESE GUYS PLAY NOTE FOR NOTE!! NICE JOB!!!. Im sure you cant do this material or you wouldn't be hatin LOSERS!

  • Great Job!!!! and Great Guitar Sound!
