I guess I just got lucky with a used EJ strat I bought a couple of years ago.Nice pickups, great neck and takes the abuse of constant giging really well.I beat the crap out of it and it stays in tune. It's actually my favorite overall guitar.A lot of people say that their crap, but I can't say that because it has proven itself to be very reliable to me.The neck is very accurate. It has a darker tone than my other strats, which I like. It's hit and miss with any guitar I guess.
His tone has changed for sure. Those EJ strats are crap, and his OD sound is mushy and muddy. Watch the ACL from '88 and then this. Tell me I'm wrong. Maybe he needs to go back to the battery crap.........Still, holy ****, this guy is THE monster guitar player. Even if he hasn't done anything in 20 years.....
@BurnElectric Ya I kinda noticed that too. I was just assuming it was the speakers on my laptop. I do think at times it is sounding a bit white noisy .
I'm certain that if you recorded Eric just messing around with his settings and playing those gorgeous little chord progressions you could release it as a mood instrumental!
I have been using tlited VOX amplifiers with a strategically placed uncapped bottle's of Armour All on the top of them since I can't remember when I started. Way to be origanal. Maybe if I jumped off the Cliffs of Dover so would.........see that's what I thought. Great.
I went to see Eric Johnson in a little club in Exeter Ca a few years ago. Maybe 40 people in the place and I was two three feet from the stage. it was awesome. he is so incredible to see live... you can't believe those sounds are coming from him! One his "people" pushed me pretty hard from behind and yelled "No photos!" in my ear. It kind of made me feel pretty stupid. I won't go see him again. To come to my small town and have people roughing up the audience over a photo was pretty lame.
lets get that blue drumset up and runnin' and we'll rip up some blues man! Nice choice of axes, your a well respected musician by many. Keep up the great work.
@shredmaster100 Eric does not use the dimarzio bridge pickups to sound like Steve Vai! He has staed in interviews that many of the stock Stratocaster bridge pickups did not have the thicker /stronger output to match the stock neck and middle pickups!
amazing that he gets that tone from so few effects he does have an original fuzz pedal though tey r very expensive and the dimarzio pickups give him that steve vai type sound
@BrianGuitarShred I laugh so much about what u said. I love Eric J. playing, but his distorted sound is terrible, also, no matter what he uses, is always the same sound!! Van Halen sounded great, then he worked so much to destroy his great sound, and he did it!!! I think nobody has courage to tell them, how bad they sound...
@carswell98 yes, 90's Japan made Ibanez Tube King, set it like the way he has his butler through a clean amp and warm analog delay and you got it. Or the newer Ibanez Tube King Overdrive NOT distortion. Warm overdrive with Analog delay through the effects loop.
2pipsueek14 Yeah I met Andy at an Ibanez clinic about fifteen years ago! He went out that night and hung with me and my friends. He even jammed with a local band! Just a great guy and super guitar player!
I am quickly coming to the conclusion that he is without a doubt the best guitarist alive right now. I was just really trying to think who is as well versed guitar/tone/music as this guy? Jimmy Herring is not a bad choice to land on that board and if we were going with younger blood Joe Bonamassa is like EJ with a little extra shot of the blues. Life Boat is Jimmy Herrings Debut solo album and is incredible.
Wow I never heard Eric Johnson actually play guitar before today and i have to say I'm blown away. Great tone, playing and not afraid to step outside the box.
@Clivebarker88 you kidding? his tone is incredible and his playing is magical, i could listen to EJ improvising for hours, his chordal work and melodies are so fluid!
I went to an EJ show here in CT (Ridgefield) with some friends. I was SO dissapointed. Not one song from any of his albums and not ONE song with an electric guitar. I never got to hear any of his "trademark" tone. The guy actually played a Joni Mitchel song on PIANO!!!. It was like Hendrix playing a flippin' bassoon concert. My friends still laugh at me (and at him) for paying for that crap. I have to hide my face now when I go out. Dude what was up? Were you stoned?
@kelljm ; You're absolutely right. Hope that will put to rest the same tiresome claims that "Anybody would sound good with all that gear", nonsense. Also, just as profound is Eric's selfless, graceious, & down to earth personality. All the years I have been checking out his interviews, and music, I have yet to hear an unkind word or gesture from him. The consumate professional !! IMO- EJ is the standard by which all are judged. We love you Eric ! Thanks for the last 30 years !!!
@PSXGAMER22 I wouldn't call it talent. Talent doesn't exist. Eric just practices a fuck load. He's dedicated. He's fucking awesome because he works at it.
@reynjay I dont know what that particular song is but listen to his song Gem, it has the same tone and effects in the clean and the compressed fuzz distortion like in the video, and its a really good instrumental.
@YummyBananaFish I think that whatever this guy is going for, there are much more melodic, soulful and faster players out there. He relies too much on gear, overuses delay and reverb, which alters the true tone of the guitar and mask a lot of stuff. His chops are great, but I've seen jaw-dropping caliber guys, plugged straight into a small cranked up thing and they moved more than he ever could. That being said, he sounds like a truly humble and earnest guy, but I dont like his style.
@jclev99 Nothing wrong with having an opinion. I personally don't particularly like the sound of a completely dry electric guitar for a lot of things - It can be quite a flat and dull sound. I very much like the way that Eric Johnson uses delay and reverb - I like his clean tones very much.

yep i think that too, it has been since 2009 that EJ tone is not the same, it gives me the impression that it has loose some "wight" i don't know how to drescribe it, it doesn't have much "power"
Man, why does he go for that real muddy, blanket over the speaker? His clean is nice and chimey and then he switches to overdrive and it's so murky. No bite or clarity. His tone on Austin City limits was awesome though.
@stratthead The answer is in some older internews with Eric. He was looking for a cello or violin tone to the point of not hearing the pick on the strings. I have had lots of conversations with guitarists about his 'muffled' tone and what you end up with is that it was his choice of a unique signature tone. For the record I like it. So it's subjective. See Eric live if possible.
@racingandmusicmylife That pedal is an old Ibanez Tube Screamer TS808 model. You can buy the re-ssue model. That and the newer TS9 are amazing sounding pedals. Just isten again and he will kick the Tube Screamer in for a great example of the sound. Also if you are on a budget check out the TS5 Tube Screamer. I have multiple TS9's (metal housing) and TS5's (plastic housing) and those lesser expensive TS5's are great. I paid $25.00 bucks for the TS5's brand new when they first came out.
@JRBain7 the original dd-2 is way sweeter than the newer digital delays, and i guess you don't have to fiddle with tapes and stuff live, but yeah i know what u mean
@jwandhistools Having met Eric briefly I can say that his stature, including his hands were not exceptional.. This was after a show and he was meeting fans that hung around. I shook hands with him like everyone else and his hands were quite normal. A quote from Howard Dumble about Eric: Know why he's that good?, that's all he does. Also Engineer Andy Johns from the March Guitar Player: "when I was working...He (Eric) would be in the other room, practising. BTW: Hendrix had big hands.
That must be a custom Dunlop fuzz face he has there, for a minute I thought dunlop released a EJ signature series face. If they do I'll pay a thousand dollars for it if it sounds that badass as his.
@steelphantom71 Who knows, they might. But I wouldn't pay $1000 for about $50 of components, haha. Knowing EJ it can't be that different from the vintage FFs he usually uses.

yep i think that too, it has been since 2009 that EJ tone is not the same, it gives me the impression that it has loose some "wight" i don't know how to drescribe it, it doesn't have much "power"

@sebace what the fuck are you dribbling on about?

The sound of 'tilted Vox DC amplifiers...' :-)

Man, why does he go for that real muddy, blanket over the speaker? His clean is nice and chimey and then he switches to overdrive and it's so murky. No bite or clarity. His tone on Austin City limits was awesome though.
stratthead 11 months ago
@stratthead The answer is in some older internews with Eric. He was looking for a cello or violin tone to the point of not hearing the pick on the strings. I have had lots of conversations with guitarists about his 'muffled' tone and what you end up with is that it was his choice of a unique signature tone. For the record I like it. So it's subjective. See Eric live if possible.

@racingandmusicmylife Ibanez Tube Screamer, classic overdrive pedal.
zodiacbluesbaby 11 months ago
@racingandmusicmylife That pedal is an old Ibanez Tube Screamer TS808 model. You can buy the re-ssue model. That and the newer TS9 are amazing sounding pedals. Just isten again and he will kick the Tube Screamer in for a great example of the sound. Also if you are on a budget check out the TS5 Tube Screamer. I have multiple TS9's (metal housing) and TS5's (plastic housing) and those lesser expensive TS5's are great. I paid $25.00 bucks for the TS5's brand new when they first came out.

The DD-2 is just great. I love it, but I would never have guessed that EJ of all people would consider it worthy of replacing an ECHOPLEX. Wow.
JRBain7 1 year ago
@JRBain7 the original dd-2 is way sweeter than the newer digital delays, and i guess you don't have to fiddle with tapes and stuff live, but yeah i know what u mean

@1212surface
I know. EJ's warm up licks are albums all by themselves.
Having freakishly huge hands helps too.(;-D

@jwandhistools Having met Eric briefly I can say that his stature, including his hands were not exceptional.. This was after a show and he was meeting fans that hung around. I shook hands with him like everyone else and his hands were quite normal. A quote from Howard Dumble about Eric: Know why he's that good?, that's all he does. Also Engineer Andy Johns from the March Guitar Player: "when I was working...He (Eric) would be in the other room, practising. BTW: Hendrix had big hands.

@TheCrindal I'll buy that...he just has such a great reach, maybe they just look large to me.
jwandhistools 11 months ago
That must be a custom Dunlop fuzz face he has there, for a minute I thought dunlop released a EJ signature series face. If they do I'll pay a thousand dollars for it if it sounds that badass as his.
steelphantom71 1 year ago
@steelphantom71 Who knows, they might. But I wouldn't pay $1000 for about $50 of components, haha. Knowing EJ it can't be that different from the vintage FFs he usually uses.
