  • love the small chat at 6:16 LOL hilariouss!!

  • This man is one cool cat and a nice guy.

  • dude dem patch cords are long

  • bravo eric, you got some asses kicked with that armor all story :D

  • THE PERFECT SOUND

  • an artist .

  • Imagine how thick the tone would be on that les paul if he went to the neck pickup :O

  • A string skipping God.

  • All in all . You know who your listeningtoo when YOU HEAR HIM. THAT IS WHAT SEPERATES 10s of thousands of shredders who all are flawless rippers original song with playing fast as lightning or a guy who can wriote an original song that hits the mark. ERIC ADMITS HIMSELF THAT "When your approaching the writing process, YOu have to push yourself melody wise, chord voicings have to be there, I mean leads, everything .IF you CAN WRITE A SONG THAT GETS YOUR HAIRS STANDING ON END !!!! PERFECTION!E.J.

  • EricJohnson is popular not because he discovered some c0ompletely unknown form of guitar playing . BUT His TONE is second to none meaning INCREDIBLE. I am a tone god myself always searching forthe best gear and vintage Marshalls , Plexis, OD1 1st sderies pedals . Marshall Pre Rola cabs . Vintage 60s bLACKFACE fenders FOR CLEAN TONES

. Ala Naturale Guitar tone. Eric Is an EXTREME PERFECTIONIST with his TONE.

hE executes HIS LEAD PLAYING is FLAWLESS, AND HIS CHORD VOICINGS ARE WONDERFUL.

  • his tone is very relaxing

  • The 7 chords from 0:20 - 0:26 are fucking amazing !!!! What are they called, please help me someone :-)

Eric Johnson, The Master of Tone !!!

  • @MRitterH

    I think it's Bsus4, Bmin7, Bb7b5, Amin7, Abmin7#5, G13, C6(maybe a maj 7 in there not sure)

They're all pretty stock root 6 bar forms, hope that helps!

  • @felixlalanne Awsome. thanx :-)

  • 4 people are tone deaf

  • this guys playing style and tone is so unique

  • hahah good sense of humor, great guitarist

  • I really love his clean sound, but I prefeer a brighter lead sound

  • I guess I just got lucky with a used EJ strat I bought a couple of years ago.Nice pickups, great neck and takes the abuse of constant giging really well.I beat the crap out of it and it stays in tune. It's actually my favorite overall guitar.A lot of people say that their crap, but I can't say that because it has proven itself to be very reliable to me.The neck is very accurate. It has a darker tone than my other strats, which I like. It's hit and miss with any guitar I guess.

  • His tone has changed for sure. Those EJ strats are crap, and his OD sound is mushy and muddy. Watch the ACL from '88 and then this. Tell me I'm wrong. Maybe he needs to go back to the battery crap.........Still, holy ****, this guy is THE monster guitar player. Even if he hasn't done anything in 20 years.....

  • I think he's Andy Summers' twin brother.

  • Love his tone, so awesome.

  • He kinda sounds like Napoleon Dynamite in this video

  • Hendrix riff at 1:00

  • 2:36 for some reason eric johnson playing a les paul looks kinda weird but dang thats a pretty guitar

  • @theguitarshredder987 That thought crossed my mind too!

  • pardon me but...didn't he used to sound better? or maybe it's just bad acoustics or recording

  • @BurnElectric Ya I kinda noticed that too. I was just assuming it was the speakers on my laptop. I do think at times it is sounding a bit white noisy .

  • boxers or briefs?, ah... but it does effect the tone.

  • I gotta get me one of those tilted Vox amps with the Armour All on top fer sure!!!!

  • At least he can poke fun at himself about his freakish quest for tone. That's kool.

  • Mr Johnson has obviously waned in old age...everyone knows you use turtle wax with vox amps...

  • I wish he could just turn off the damn chorus

  • He tore half the Marshall logo off his cab so he can get a bit more high end.

  • "TABS PLEASE`?!?!?!?!?!"

  • ...........I've heard Eric uses the "Sheepdrive" for his lead work. I might get one....they sound pretty,.....wooly!

  • I'm certain that if you recorded Eric just messing around with his settings and playing those gorgeous little chord progressions you could release it as a mood instrumental!

  • My amplitube III with GT-10 can make all those sounds and more.

  • what happened to the Dumble?

  • the fuzz face is old old news, update your shit dude.

  • 2people do not like Jamaican batteries.

  • in the whole video he uses the bridge pick up only. Did u noticed that?!

  • @rccbatv he used the kneck aswell

  • @boogieou818 you're right from 0:25 to 1:06

  • @rccbatv The beginning is neck or neck and middle

  • Eric Johnson cut his hair ultimately because it affected his tone

  • @rodrigoawilasco - Hahahahahahahahaahaaa.. yeah...

  • @rodrigoawilasco Keeping it short screwed up the tone the least, because the fuzzface is really picky.

  • @rodrigoawilasco oh man this comment is awesome!!! ahahaha

  • I have been using tlited VOX amplifiers with a strategically placed uncapped bottle's of Armour All on the top of them since I can't remember when I started. Way to be origanal. Maybe if I jumped off the Cliffs of Dover so would.........see that's what I thought. Great.

  • Batteries from Jamaica

  • SUCH A GREAT STYLE & TONE!

  • lets get that blue drumset up and runnin' and we'll rip up some blues man! Nice choice of axes, your a well respected musician by many. Keep up the great work.

  • Such an inspiration!

  • @shredmaster100 Eric does not use the dimarzio bridge pickups to sound like Steve Vai! He has staed in interviews that many of the stock Stratocaster bridge pickups did not have the thicker /stronger output to match the stock neck and middle pickups!

  • What a talented player He knows where to push or pull.I can listen him forever and I might be gay for him

  • i know a guy that works at a local music store that used to go on tour with him

  • timbre perfeito

  • I love how his distortion sorta just melts together when he gets to those low notes

  • amazing that he gets that tone from so few effects he does have an original fuzz pedal though tey r very expensive and the dimarzio pickups give him that steve vai type sound

  • Great cleans, but everything else leaves a lot to be desired

  • @BrianGuitarShred I laugh so much about what u said. I love Eric J. playing, but his distorted sound is terrible, also, no matter what he uses, is always the same sound!! Van Halen sounded great, then he worked so much to destroy his great sound, and he did it!!! I think nobody has courage to tell them, how bad they sound...

  • Eric Johnson is a jedi and the like bar is his green lightsaber: he trumps over darth vader!

  • His clean tone is the best of the three.

  • tonelicious ...

  • Wow he sounded alot like Clapton with that Les Paul... which is cool!! good phrasing :D

  • love the clean tone at the intro

  • I have to ask, is there anything that will get close to a Butler Tube Drive without dropping $300 on a dirt pedal?

  • @carswell98 yes, 90's Japan made Ibanez Tube King, set it like the way he has his butler through a clean amp and warm analog delay and you got it. Or the newer Ibanez Tube King Overdrive NOT distortion. Warm overdrive with Analog delay through the effects loop.

  • @LifesonPetrucci thank you

  • Comment removed

  • ladies, commence ovulation

  • EJ could play through a solid state crate using a first act guitar and still sound like EJ

  • Ahh what is he playing @1:20?

  • 06:23 What amplifier is that?

  • 2pipsueek14 Yeah I met Andy at an Ibanez clinic about fifteen years ago! He went out that night and hung with me and my friends. He even jammed with a local band! Just a great guy and super guitar player!

  • If you like this video check out Andy Timmons! He is super melodic with great technique and tone!

  • @spider62able hes a great guitarist too. he and eric are two of my favorites

  • I want that flame maple neck on my EJ Strat!

  • Eric Johnson IS Mr Stratocaster..............David Gilmour may have no#1 but EJ has 54's & 57's coming out of his ears man!! YEAH!!!!

  • Great stuff.

  • How does he get the tone at 1:20. It is magical

  • @kallelal EJ sig. Strat + custom Fuzzface + '67 (or maybe '68) Marshall tremolo JMP + Huge amounts of skill... and a tilted Vox DC amp :D lol

  • TONE KING

  • Eric Johnson likes batteries from Jamaica? Nice. :-)

  • Did I spot a Marshall JMP-1 in the rack just now?

  • It's about tilted VOX dc amplifiers now (with a properly aligned bottle of Armor All, cap off).

Now I can sound just like him!

  • I am quickly coming to the conclusion that he is without a doubt the best guitarist alive right now. I was just really trying to think who is as well versed guitar/tone/music as this guy? Jimmy Herring is not a bad choice to land on that board and if we were going with younger blood Joe Bonamassa is like EJ with a little extra shot of the blues. Life Boat is Jimmy Herrings Debut solo album and is incredible.

  • Hey , I have the Vox DA5, it rocks, Eric!!

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who plays over the neck at times. Phew.

  • I wonder why he chose the Boss DD2 to replce the echoplex? So many other options out there. Great video! Thanks for sharing!

  • Johnson sound is like velvet.

  • Wow I never heard Eric Johnson actually play guitar before today and i have to say I'm blown away. Great tone, playing and not afraid to step outside the box.

  • At last - some humour from EJ, more please!

  • EJ's like the mad scientist of guitar.... I love this guy!

  • I like what the camera man did , the video looks so natural and really beautiful!

  • I'd say, he's one of the most talented artists to have ever lived. Alongside Van Gogh and Puccini etc.

  • He's really starting to look like George Harrison

  • Always wanted to see him rip on a nice les paul.

  • 06:50 Batteries from Jamaica! haha!

  • @Clivebarker88 you kidding? his tone is incredible and his playing is magical, i could listen to EJ improvising for hours, his chordal work and melodies are so fluid!

  • He can probably plug into a toaster and sound better than most.

  • OMG! I gotta go out an' get me a Vox practice amp and a bottle of Armour All...an' I can play just like E.J., who'd a thunk it?

  • the most impeccable tone

  • hahaha the ending made me laughed my ass off.

  • A certain rhyme from some rapper comes up everytime i hear eric johnson.

"HOW CAN 1 MAN HAVE ALL THAT POWER!?"

  • I went to an EJ show here in CT (Ridgefield) with some friends. I was SO dissapointed. Not one song from any of his albums and not ONE song with an electric guitar. I never got to hear any of his "trademark" tone. The guy actually played a Joni Mitchel song on PIANO!!!. It was like Hendrix playing a flippin' bassoon concert. My friends still laugh at me (and at him) for paying for that crap. I have to hide my face now when I go out. Dude what was up? Were you stoned?

  • I thought his tone secret might have been Gain laundry detergent. Get it? ;-)

  • @ToneChaser4Life - Calgon = ancient Chinese secret, Mr. Lee. Gain is good too.

  • sounded more like a phaser...

  • When are you coming to Europe Eric???????????? Long overdue sir...

  • Eric Johnson + 57 Strat

    Eric Johnson + EJ Strat

    Eric Johnson + Les Paul

Through a blackface twin, plexi, or Dumble still sounds exactly like Eric Johnson

  • @kelljm ; You're absolutely right. Hope that will put to rest the same tiresome claims that "Anybody would sound good with all that gear", nonsense. Also, just as profound is Eric's selfless, graceious, & down to earth personality. All the years I have been checking out his interviews, and music, I have yet to hear an unkind word or gesture from him. The consumate professional !! IMO- EJ is the standard by which all are judged. We love you Eric ! Thanks for the last 30 years !!!

  • @kelljm True dat. Just goes to show that maybe your "tone" really is in your fingers...

  • guess he got rid of the dumble, still has the buzz

  • Hey folks - if you dig this, check out my Shawn Lane clips at adios73

    cheers.

  • I want his sound so badlyy

  • god eric johnson is so freaking talented

  • @PSXGAMER22 I wouldn't call it talent. Talent doesn't exist. Eric just practices a fuck load. He's dedicated. He's fucking awesome because he works at it.

  • Glad EJ can poke fun at his OCD...nice.

  • Theres something wrong with the phrase "I replaced the Echoplex with the DD-2

  • @SQ11774 i know in a previous interview he said its getting harder to keep them running.

  • @SQ11774 I know! There are a number of other delays that would've been less drastic.

  • what song is he playing from 0:00 to 1:05?does anybody know?

  • @reynjay I dont know what that particular song is but listen to his song Gem, it has the same tone and effects in the clean and the compressed fuzz distortion like in the video, and its a really good instrumental.

  • @reynjay it's called improvisation lol

  • @reynjay he is probably just making it up on the spot. he is that good.

  • @reynjay its not a song

  • Dunlop Fuzz Face ?

  • @taipobryans it was probably custom made for him by dunlop

  • @sephX22 Yes, I would think so. Specifically Jeorge Tripps - He made the one that Joe Bonamassa used before his signature version...

  • what is that box in the back at 2:56? (next to the lamp)

  • this guy is severly overated

  • @jclev99 explain

  • @YummyBananaFish I think that whatever this guy is going for, there are much more melodic, soulful and faster players out there. He relies too much on gear, overuses delay and reverb, which alters the true tone of the guitar and mask a lot of stuff. His chops are great, but I've seen jaw-dropping caliber guys, plugged straight into a small cranked up thing and they moved more than he ever could. That being said, he sounds like a truly humble and earnest guy, but I dont like his style.

  • @jclev99

To each his own. I like this particular usage of effects a lot. Reminds me of the 80s.

  • @jclev99 Nothing wrong with having an opinion. I personally don't particularly like the sound of a completely dry electric guitar for a lot of things - It can be quite a flat and dull sound. I very much like the way that Eric Johnson uses delay and reverb - I like his clean tones very much.

    But, to each his own.

  • eric you rock. like how you say tube SCreamer lol

  • Dang it! Shounds liks I needs to gets me one of 'them tilted vox DC amplicafiers!!! lol

  • Not the bets EJ tone I've ever heard, but man that guy can play.

  • @fakeplasticmeat

yep i think that too, it has been since 2009 that EJ tone is not the same, it gives me the impression that it has loose some "wight" i don't know how to drescribe it, it doesn't have much "power"

  • @sebace what the fuck are you dribbling on about?

  • The sound of 'tilted Vox DC amplifiers...' :-)

  • Man, why does he go for that real muddy, blanket over the speaker? His clean is nice and chimey and then he switches to overdrive and it's so murky. No bite or clarity. His tone on Austin City limits was awesome though.

  • @stratthead The answer is in some older internews with Eric. He was looking for a cello or violin tone to the point of not hearing the pick on the strings. I have had lots of conversations with guitarists about his 'muffled' tone and what you end up with is that it was his choice of a unique signature tone. For the record I like it. So it's subjective. See Eric live if possible.

  • no homo, frikandel dirty!

  • can someone please tell as to what the fluro green pedal is any info appreciated

  • @racingandmusicmylife Ibanez Tube Screamer, classic overdrive pedal.

  • @racingandmusicmylife That pedal is an old Ibanez Tube Screamer TS808 model. You can buy the re-ssue model. That and the newer TS9 are amazing sounding pedals. Just isten again and he will kick the Tube Screamer in for a great example of the sound. Also if you are on a budget check out the TS5 Tube Screamer. I have multiple TS9's (metal housing) and TS5's (plastic housing) and those lesser expensive TS5's are great. I paid $25.00 bucks for the TS5's brand new when they first came out.

  • The DD-2 is just great. I love it, but I would never have guessed that EJ of all people would consider it worthy of replacing an ECHOPLEX. Wow.

  • @JRBain7 the original dd-2 is way sweeter than the newer digital delays, and i guess you don't have to fiddle with tapes and stuff live, but yeah i know what u mean

  • Batteries from Jamaica HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Amazing as usual - i just peed myself. Im gonna go home and play now :)

  • @1212surface

I know. EJ's warm up licks are albums all by themselves.

Having freakishly huge hands helps too.(;-D

  • @jwandhistools Having met Eric briefly I can say that his stature, including his hands were not exceptional.. This was after a show and he was meeting fans that hung around. I shook hands with him like everyone else and his hands were quite normal. A quote from Howard Dumble about Eric: Know why he's that good?, that's all he does. Also Engineer Andy Johns from the March Guitar Player: "when I was working...He (Eric) would be in the other room, practising. BTW: Hendrix had big hands.

  • @TheCrindal I'll buy that...he just has such a great reach, maybe they just look large to me.

  • That must be a custom Dunlop fuzz face he has there, for a minute I thought dunlop released a EJ signature series face. If they do I'll pay a thousand dollars for it if it sounds that badass as his.

  • @steelphantom71 Who knows, they might. But I wouldn't pay $1000 for about $50 of components, haha. Knowing EJ it can't be that different from the vintage FFs he usually uses.

  • those are some awesome strats

  • It's about tilted-box DC amplifiers now, baby... :) Genius.

  • lol

  • Beautiful sound & playing .

  • sound perfect

  • Ow and btw I think eric definately plays hours and hours straight on that vox :D

  • OMG !!!! i laughed my ass off , what a relaxed guy !! he truelly is a peacefull musician. one of my biggest influences for sure
