When you see the floating figures, I wonder if this was done by placing a large shop front plate-glass window in front of the scene being filmed of the Devil then using a floodlight pointed back toward but not dirrectly at the camera so that actors hanging from pulleys dressed in white would reflect off the plate glass and therefore their image would appear enough so that the camera could picks up both scenes at once? Of course the camera et al would be draped in mat-black fabric. :o)o:
This actually scared the crap out of me. If you think about it, it's really pretty horrible what happens. The primitive effects only add to the horror for me.
@InfamousMonsters What's your idea of hell? I personally don't really believe in any religion, but if there were a hell I think that there would be lots of people who'd have to continuously live through their punishement. Guess like Hades in Greek Myth. Like Sisyphus who had to roll a boulder up a mountain and everytime he thought he made it all the way to the top, the boulder would just drag him down to where he started, so he had to restart. Over and over again.
The Answer of the colour question is that in the early 20th they didn't have colourfilm, instead they hired people who painted every picture in the film by hand. It was a really hard and tooked amazingly long time.
Terrifying! How am I going to go to bed now??????!!!!!!

Wow cool, but just a question. What about the colors? Are them recently?

@hanniaskelleton
No, the film was actually hand-colored frame-by-frame.

@Ryuinfinity
I know the feeling. I shudder to think of a Hell worse than the one depicted in this neat little gem.
