The banjo is a main instrument (usually the lead) but that completely disappeared in more modern Jamaican music. Usually you only hear Mento at touristy spots in Negril, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios but in recent years it has been making somewhat of a comeback. The evolution of Jamaican music (as far as I know) moves from Mento, then the long leap to Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae and then Dancehall.
