Actually, what Mythbusters did was with wet quicksand AKA mud. You won't submerge unless you want to. Dry quicksand is different. It occures in desert regions when a natural depression in the ground fills with very fine dust over time. They look just like the rest of the desert until you step on them. Will they kill you? Depends on how deep they are. Also, you will sink quickly. Step in one that's over your head and by the time it occures to you that something happened, you're already dying.
