@KurtTheGuitarPlayer I'm not Andy, but I can help. You don't need an effects loop to plug a pedal. What you do is you plug the guitar into the pedal's input jack. Then connect the pedal's output jack to the amp's input where you'd normally plug in the guitar. This position is called "in front of the amp" because the signal from the guitar will go to the pedal, and then to the amp. Effects loops put your pedals between the preamp and power amp (two parts of the amp before the speaker).
I tried so many distortion pedals- classic ones, weird ones , boutique..and DS1 is still the best i have ever tried. Even tho i don˙t play through dist pedal i always have one DS1 for benchmark when someone brings me "that all singing all dancing new pedal". And you guess, DS1 always win.
My first pedal. Still very palatable when used right. I keep my tone real low right before you hear the sharpness and the distortion high before it gets flubby. Match the volume to the amp and you have a nice distortion. I use it as a second flavor of dirty channel on my Marshall JCM2000. I can even use it with the dirty channel to make my solos have near infinite sustain with little effect on the overall sound (with the distortion cranked, not as a low distortion boost).
@pantera2004hellbound tHE mETAL zONE isn't really the best pedal to get a Pantera sound goin'. ..unless you use a separate EQ pedal with it...then maybe it could work ;)
i was wondering if the ds 1 is gud for the kind of punk rock stuff i play...e.g green day, blink182, sex pistols etc seems prtty sick just wanted advice tho ;)
@ruddersfilms96 well, if your on a tight budget, this would work, however, if you are willing to save up some dough, the 'JHS Angry Charlie' is a great sounding, very tube like distortion. Yes it is $200 dollars. but if you only get one distortion pedal, that's the one to get. Check out the review done by Gearmanndude here on youtube.
@topdog2328 The name says everything. The DS-1 is simply an amazing distortion, perfect for a great crunch, good compressed sounds or you can crank it up for an heavyer tone. The Blues Driver is more like a lead tipe of distortion, preety much a different distortion. Depending on wich type of music you play, it's just your choice.
@topdog2328 Blues Driver is more an overdrive, although at high gain settings, I think it has more distortion than the DS-1. I think the Blues Driver is a lot thicker sounding. I use the Blues Driver to push my mildly dirty 2010 Mesa Dual Rectifier and it's the best I think I ever sounded. But I could go to a gig with the Blues Driver as my main distortion sound, its dynamic range is super wide!!
i AM BUYING THIS PEDAL BECAUSE ANDY IS A FUCKING KING, AND HE PLAYED NIRVANA - Serve the Servants :))) too bad i cant order it trough this site, cause i live far faar away...

first i was all over behringer and digitech, now i fell in love with the real deal, the boss ds1, now i understand why to pay more for quality, sounds orgasmic, (hey can i use this pedal with a peavey vypyr 15W ) ?
i think mine is bit messed up....when it comes to the volume level (meaning i have to turn it all the way up to get equal sound) but despite that is sounds too smooth and nasty for me to honestly complain
its a beautiful sounding pedal, the saturation is just perfect, its my ideal distortion sound, however just doesnt have enough of it in it, so im getting two and gunna cascading them bad boys. beautiful pedal. truly beautiful.
i dont really dig this pedal, just got it, and have to say that everyone whos thinking of metal zone or this, should get metal zone, you can get more sounds from that, and it has alot better harmonics for squeling and pinch harmonics. i have behringer UM100 wich is a copy of metal zone, its cheap and sounds great! and yeah i got an tube amp. i may use this one for bluesyrock and that sorta stuff. it would sound alot better with equalizer in front of it tho :p
ive got marshall amps and i can never get mine to sound like this....it just squeels with feedback no matter how little gain or level i have dialed in....i even have feedback surpressors and they dont work on this pedal....any tips?
@BorisDono dont worry , its proven that transistor amps are really consistent and have a great tone at metal, tube amps are sought after mostly for that overdrive vintage sound
Just FYI to anyone who may see this, DS-1s are great for voltage sagging. I had a stock one for a while and wasn't terribly pleased w/ it, but I distinctly remember one time kicking it on and thinking, "Wow, that sounds way better than normal!" Found out the battery was dying. Live and learn~shrug~ :)
(I still got rid of it for a Rat 2, tho... then I got rid of the Rat 2 for an OCD, and now I'm happy:P lol)
@yobhsiFehT Agreed. I have mine hooked up to my Pedal Power 2+'s sag output @ 4 volts. It really brings out a smoother, fuzzier tone. Kinda like a less sustained Big Muff. I find that the stock 9 volt is way to harsh, even when I back off the tone.
If people would actually turn knobs on their amps they may be able to get decent tones out of this pedal! The thing to remember is that the circuit in this pedal is very similar to the Big Muff. I find that its better to use the DS-1 as a fuzz type pedal rather than a metal pedal. Creamy leads, fat chords, or raw aggressive rhythm playing.
What a horrible sounding pedal. Very over rated. Not enough mid or bass. I guess if you have one of those high dollar tube amps you could coax out some half decent sounds. Only hope is the utra mod which brings the price over one bill easy. The whiteface reissue rat sounds nice. When are you going to review the new MXR 78 Custom Badass pedal? At 80 bucks it has to be much much better.
