@BlazeIgnitus .... i know what it means.. but i'm a Junior in my High School's Wind Ensemble and we usually play grade 6 pieces that i find leaps and bounds easier than this song lol. And that's not cause i suck or anything, i'm actually 1st chair and 5th overall out of my the whole school XD
@OreosInRamen By Grade 5 I think it means Level 5 out of 6, which is common for school band evaluations through associations such as NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association), through the MENC.
I am a first trumpet/cornet player in my Symphonic band. And lets just put it this way. I'm having a real hard time playing my solo at 4:29. Who knew it would be 32nd notes.
I'm an oboe player, and just got the music for this today! We played another Smith song earlier in the year, and I'm SO excited for this! I've been BEGGING my director to play this for about a year.
@who8mahbacon No I didnt mean 5th grade! I wasn trying to type on my iphone. Still not very good at that. But I can barely play this and I'm a freshman.! :S LOLZ And I got the trumpet solo at 4:29
By far my favorite piece my band played. Well we got it a long time ago like 6 years ago, before I was in high school, but we got it again, it's so epic. Go alto saxes!!! XD
WOW!!!! Back in my Sophomore year of high school, my band played this song. We fell in love with this song. I remember playing the Flute part on Bells with the melodic line that went really fast. and I also got to play the Timpani part once when the original person that played it got sick, so i was the only one who could play. I had fun with song and it will always be one of my favorites!!!!!!
our band is playing this :D we record ourselves so we can listen and critique our self....last time we played this at a concert....you can hear a small child saying mommy im scared during the recording:p...random info...tenor sax ftw :D
Hey, I'm in Maryland Junior State too. I got the solo :) for trumpet. Though it was only because the first trumpet couldn't play it ... he was too tired.
I played this song in my high school band durring my freshman year plus the rest of Dante's Divine Comedy movement by Robert W. Smith. This is by far the scariest music I have ever played and the scariest music I have ever heard in my entire life.
I love the timpani and oboe parts especially :) I myself played the clarinet and this song was pretty interesting lol ohh and the trumpet solo...man shit the whole song is BEASTTTT
im in a high school band and we played this. it was probably the hardest piece of music i have yet to learn how to play..but the show came out wonderful and i grew to love this song
We played this at Charleston Souther University in 1997 when it had just been com. by George Mason University. Anthony Maello(sp) was our clinician...One of my favorite pieces ever!!! I dont think that Purgatorio had been completed yet when we played it though.

I love this song, our band played it along with the rest of the divine comedy 2 years ago in Wind Symphony. We had a concert in the dark with a whole slide show production. I played timpani for it and loved my parts (especially this song) that I memorized them and can play them even to this day. Timpani ftw!!! : D
Just bought the hardback version of all three stories (poems) at Borders a couple days ago. Funny how I was inspired by the game & animated epic to get it but quite honestly, I enjoy reading too so this book works out great lol :D

I played this my junior year of high school. It was fun, but ALOT of work and practice involved. I was in percussion. By far my favorite piece i've ever played.
I was the Tuba player for a small high school band, and we did this song's marching arrangement my freshman year (2003-04) and we dominated every competition we went to with it. Even dominated at Bands of America. Love this piece and loved playing it.
We marched Divine Comedy in 2009, (Pine Forest High School) And it's definitely the most intense show we have have played, imho. ill never forget this piece either, my favorite of all of them :)
Ha ha ha this Piece brings me back memories. It was my Junior year when we played this. I had the privilege to play 1st horn. Also, my best friend's valves got stuck during the trumpet solo. Which was pretty funny. ah good memories
Anyone else notice the slow section in the middle has the same tuba/bass and horn part at as the movement "Spring Rounds" from Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring?
@Katamari332 Yes, I did notice it when I was at the high school band concert here in my hometown. That piece is one of my favorites. :- ) The Divine Comedy quicky became one of my favorites when I heard and saw these kids perform such a wonderful piece of awesome music!! I cried thru the whole performance. That's how well these kids did!!
Does anyone know where I can find this version of the music? I have the CD performed by the George Mason University Wind Ensemble, but this version sounds different.
I play the piccolo and The piccolo part...I need jesus lol Almost everything I play in the song is a very fast part and it has several accidentals plus playing it up an octave in tune...I love the duet with the oboe though :)
