They blocked the road; one driver started to edge into the crowd so the women grabbed their children and put them in front of the car. I later contacted all my friends and relatives who complained to the mall owners. A court injunction stopped any further protests in the mall.

I can understand extra prison time for hate crimes - though, since most things considered hate crimes are merely incensory atop an existing violent crime, I question whether such time is redundant or effective.
But outlawing hate speech opens the door to shallow interpretations of the word "hate". Simply stating "God is Imaginary" could in the future be considered "hateful", as the opinions of fundamentalists on YouTube illustrates nicely.
Further, given the political direction of the UK, and in Europe in general, such laws could easily reach toward a meaning of "hate" that allows for statements like "You will go to hell if you don't accept Jesus" - one of the most offensive things you can say to an agnostic or atheist - to also become part of the definition.
This law is not in ANYONE'S interests, and I hope that the UK has a method to overturn these stupid individuals' convictions, and set the right precedent for a free society.

I agree. There was a muslim protest at a shopping mall where I shop. They blocked the road; one driver started to edge into the crowd so the women grabbed their children and put them in front of the car. I later contacted all my friends and relatives who complained to the mall owners. A court injunction stopped any further protests in the mall.
I definitely think China has taken the right approach; force them to behave or kill them. China won't have many problems with muslims anymore.

However, if the system of state run mental institutions had not been obliterated, by the big churches and the for profit prison industry, via lobyists payola, people could still have been locked up for being nutters, and a threat to themselves and society.

Damn. I hate racism, and I think that racists should be punished somehow, but not this way. Maybe fined for propagating hate speech, or maybe a ticket or something, but not imprisonment...

Well I hate racists too but soon someone will call anything you say hate speech and then soon your neighbor can't criticize without fear of hate speech and then soon you can not ciritcize either and you'll all be in prison for hate speech. I always say if you don't like what somone has to say wither plug your ears or don't listen.

WHY HAS Dermot Ahern, in 2009, made blasphemy a crime punishable by a fine of €25,000? When this anachronistic part of the now Defamation Act is signed into law (it passed through the Oireachtas last night but only on the casting vote of the chair of the Seanad)

I Norway we have both a racism- and a blasphemy paragraph, but the latter is dorment. Just a few months ago the government wanted to remove the blasphemy paragraph. Sounds good, huh? -No, they wanted to intensify it and make it part of the racism paragraph. As one of the most atheist nations in the world, the people went nuts over this proposal. It ended up being dropped.

The United Kingdom political parties (except the BNP) have become obsessed with polittical correctness.
They're willing to appease radical Muslims and other minorities at the risk of alienating the local British populace.
I really wish the Queen would say something at least.... actually there is a way she could gain absolute power and restore order. All she has to do is dissolve Parliament and refuse to call elections; that will give her the reins of power.

Terrible.
I can understand extra prison time for hate crimes - though, since most things considered hate crimes are merely incensory atop an existing violent crime, I question whether such time is redundant or effective.
But outlawing hate speech opens the door to shallow interpretations of the word "hate". Simply stating "God is Imaginary" could in the future be considered "hateful", as the opinions of fundamentalists on YouTube illustrates nicely.

Further, given the political direction of the UK, and in Europe in general, such laws could easily reach toward a meaning of "hate" that allows for statements like "You will go to hell if you don't accept Jesus" - one of the most offensive things you can say to an agnostic or atheist - to also become part of the definition.
This law is not in ANYONE'S interests, and I hope that the UK has a method to overturn these stupid individuals' convictions, and set the right precedent for a free society.

Ah, but there's the trap for monotheists. They would have to claim that other religions' gods were not real, so thus they could be imprisoned. Just have to get them to say it out loud.
The crime would reflect the hideous hypocrisy of it all. Such laws would not survive the rebellion of the human spirit for very long.

while i think hollucaust deniers are disgusting, they shouldn't go to jail. i mean, hell, one of the bishops is a denier and he's a leader in the catholic church!
as long as they aren't hurting anyone (physically or mentally [tormenting a specific person]) it should be allowed.
look at the Phelps clan. they're disgusting, but they're allowed to be that way.

Idiots like those two should be allowed to deny fact. If they deny that the world is round, that the holocaust happended and so on then let them.
But know this: if the religous use this law to imprison some politicians then it will back-fire. When the muslims got the political correct government and so on to imprison gert wilders for being critical of islam it backfired. Wilders party was the next largest at the European union election. So if the BNP will be imprisoned it will backfire.

while in UK, islamists (not only) want to get much more restrictions than exist in other countries.
