  • Civilization stopped being interesting after the Revolution and now I just want to return to nature.

  • All true. But he also published a book in 1793 where he described the City of Chaux as prototype for democratic urban life as proclaimed during the revolution.

  • At the first view it's hard to imagine somebody thinking in architecture, with Marat sniffing conspirations and beeing murdered, with Roberspierre sending Danton to the guillotine and beeing excecuted hymself, with Napoleon hurrying to build his own Empire, and with the neighbourhood trying to destroy the Revolutionary France.

But the "normal" human activity goes always on.

Good video. Thanks. Your Aviccena's video good too, remembers that not only 11-9 came from the east.

  • I think those architects developed those ideas in the decades before the revolution. But the revolution enabled them to discuss and execute them freely. Furthermore every revolution or movement needs monuments as a sign of success and as a manifestation of their ideology. That doesn't distinguish the French Revlution from Stalinism, Fascism, religion and so on.

  • Yeap, we use to forgett that a brutal change like a revolution changes not only the political structure, but also all the human development. Some doors close, and another path become wide open.

:-D Yeap, without TV such kind of propaganda was clearly necessary: Good, because nobody remember a TV spot, but we can still see buldings, statues and pantings.

By the way: why don't you try to make a video about midget submarines? German, British, Italian, etc. ? That would be nice!

    See you!

  • Good idea. I've three further historical videos in work. When they're done I'll do the midget flick.

  • Thanks for the compliment. We thank the conservation of antique knowledge European medieval monastries, Byzantium and the Islamic world. But the Islamic world and Byzantium were the only ones which evolved this knowledge. From the 13th-15th century, European universities opened themselves to Islamic knowledge, which boosted their development. The Western world likes to ignore that fact.

  • Interesting as always. Never would have imagined that they would combine the ancient world style with modern designs. And to think that similar architecture was plainly achieved untill the 19th, 20th century...

  • The 19th and the 20th century were full of returns to old styles. I think it's a question of fashion and attitude. During the late 18th and early 19th century, the age of enlightment, people connected the antiquity to democracy and republicanism. During the age of Romanticism in the mid 19th century, they started to reuse medieval designs like Gothic architecture because they considered those simple days better than the actual time of nationalism and industrialization. And so on, and so on...
