Everyone should be nicer to Mari. She's a main character in Evangelion, which means by the end of the series she's either going to be dead or a broken shell of a human being. (Hell I wouldn't be surprised if all her hopes, dreams and everything she believes in is utterly destroyed ten minutes into the next movie, Eva is that sadistic.) The happier and more confident a character is at the beginning of a series, the more traumatized and broken they are by the time Anno is finished with them.

@RyanKHS06 That's basically what I meant. Read my words like this: It's okay to have moments of despair no matter what your age, so long as you don't dwell on it. Due to the faster pacing of the movies, they don't dwell on the angst for as long as the TV show did, and so the movies seem more mature for it.

Aside from that, I also meant it has grown up in quality, as well.

@CantStoptheRobot Personally, the difference was that Shinji in the anime was constantly hammered by events that dug away at his confidence and his sanity, almost breaking his mind, to the point where anything to do with EVA terrified him. In comparison, the movie Shinji is less susceptible to the brooding of his anime counterpart, and focuses more on the here and now than the mentality of it all, as such tending to keep his mentality much better.

Silly commentary that of tours considering that the series changed th focus due to the fact that the director is retelling and continuing the story. I don't think that we can disrespect the problem the author has com through while he was doing the original series. If it was not that Evangelion wouldn't be what it has become. A phenomenom.
