Didn't take the time to read through all the comments; where did this recording come from? I don't know what official release it would have been, it's not on any of mine, and it's too clean sounding to be a bootleg.
It is proof, The Mothers could play beautifully, despite being called "a bunch of tone-deaf perverts," as I have heard them called.
When you get past Frank's often explicit stage humour and subversive wit- you find here a great tune that'd be equally at home at Carnegie Hall or a kiddie's party- There was nobody else like him
Best. Song. EVER! wow I prefer this version way more than the Hot Rats cut- more of a jazzy feel i think.... the theme is stated and everybody gets a chance to shine. pure genius
not to mention that he was correct in many many ways- Many of us are blinded by society.we live lies and believe lies, that we turn into truths.....it is a mess and until we wake up to this fact,it will continue to be a mess.....Bitterness has nothing to do with it..
FANTASTIC FRANK ZAPPA MASTER CLASS now free on Ustream! Theory and analysis of Peaches, Watermelon in Easter Hay, Envelopes, etc.. HUGELY fun, entertaining and educational. Type in "Dave Frank" Zappa on Ustream website anytime. You vill dig this:)
Well said "TheJoshuajakucewicz." - about Zappa just playing and letting go "of bitterness." I'm not a Zappa fan, but I do really like "Hot Rats", some "Freak Out" and stuff like this. Why he didn't do more real music is beyond my understanding - he was obviously capable. Except for a great live instrumental jam of "Ffty-Fifty", I can NOT listen to any Zappa from 1970s and 80s. But, the overture of "Yellow Shark" in 1992 is really good. So Non-fans miss him also - its strange.
@PicnicHikeMusic Why didn't he do more real music???? He did, you're not aware of it.DOn't forget the genius released 62 albums in a 30 yr period and thats only 5 % of what he has in the vault. As a 20th century composer,he ranks up there with stravinsky shoenberg, debussy, etc.and as a prolific composer he's up there with shubert and the likes. The man is the third greatest in my book, next to beethoven and stravinsky,of course! He's dimensions above every pop artist who ever lived. Not even close!!!
@PicnicHikeMusic well, you are missing a ton of great stuff....thats why we got opinions- but i would reconsider and spend some time listening to all the music, you apparentl;y think isn't any good......
Yeah, it's Hendrix. This album was released in 1967. Hendrix was busting on the scene, and Zappa put his picture on the cover of this album: "We're Only In It For The Money."
@Hapmorii : A minor correction, if I may. "We're Only in It for the Money" was released in 1968, and Hendrix was an established major artist by then, not just "busting on the scene." Hendrix was just one of many people shown on the front cover, a garish collage spoofing the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper."
@CameraJams Of course not, but it's one of the many versions the Genius loved to offer his public. If you knew Zappa, you should know he liked to reinvent himself each time.
@Hendrixblues123 -It'll be a cardboard cut-out of Hendrix- Seeing as it's a send up of Sgt Peppers lp artwrok and artist Peter Blake used cut-outs in that
@keltyk that's jimi. it's definitely not a cardboard cutout, i've seen video of this photoshoot and he was moving and walking around. the video is on here, it's one of the ruth underwood videos
you name it! priceless the "best band..." version. i cried tears of joy, singing along "sauerkraut, gargabe truck etc." though a bit bland, one of his masterpieces.
@TheJoshuajakucewicz I couldn't disagree with you more about Frank's "bitterness." Just because you don't agree with his analysis of U.S. culture doesn't mean he is bitter. And you haven't the ability to condescend to him anyhow. Thank god for Frank's satire. It's brought humor and INSIGHT to millions.
I think its funny because Zappa described the II V progressions as one of the most hateful progressions in music... yet... here he is working wonders with it...
Totally love this performance, just one nit picky thing to mention...
I think, technically, the song is called "Mr. Green Genes," not "son of..."
Mr. Green Genes was released on the Mothers album Uncle Meat in 1969 (the recoring was from 68), while Son of Mr. Green Genes was released on the Zappa album (after the Mothers broke up) Hot Rats (released later in 69). Plus he calls it "Mr. Green Genes" in this recording. Just felt like mentioning that.
