  • This stuff is crazy cool, I wish they had good teachers of this in Canada. People don't respect styles like this but I sure as hell do.

  • this guy a master of south pray mantis powerful and fast !

  • Hung-Ga does in fact have similar hand and stance, but it isn't introduced until the Tiger and Crane form. Many of the short hand techniques in Hung-Ga originate in Fukien Siu-Lum/Bak Hok, which shared common ancestry with Nam Tong Long.

If you examine the short-hand Crane and Snake techniques, you will see the similarities.

BTW-Hung-Ga is not actually a Tiger and Crane style, but a Five Animal style. Tiger and Crane form was the most popular set demonstrated, hence the nickname.

  • Much respect to all styles, no one is better than the other because ultimately it comes down to the practitioner. I must say though that I absolutely love this style, it's movements and techniques are beautiful and deadly. Respect.

  • Most of the Earthbenders in Avatar use Hung Gar. Toph, being blind and learning from the animal teachers, uses unique techniques based on Southern Praying Mantis. After the creators chose this style for Toph they learned of a legend that Southern Praying Mantis Style was developed by a blind woman so it turned out to be very fitting.

  • I was able to buy two Kwan Tak Hing Wong Fei Hung movies in SF's Chinatown. Would like to get more, including this one. Are any of them available subtitled?

  • 100% perfect

  • 100% perfect

  • This is lee wing sing Kung fu

  • This is great footage.

  • Maybe an influence on Krumping?

  • Awesome video! Love this kind of stuff.

Look at the guy at :33-:34. It seems like the camera a skips, and it kind of does, but also if you look really carefully, you can see his hands going REALLY fast.

  • This is excellent footage of Southern Mantis.

  • View this clip and read the "more info" text

Jook Lum Southern Praying Mantis Kungfu - 1954

  • wow the guy is a true master like you dont see anymore

  • Lol. They're around. You just have to know where to look for them.

  • im not gonna have a trip to taiwan or fujian any soon lol anyway i guess im fine with my ymaa stuff!

  • OMG! This is brilliant! Thanks for posting it! This is amazing! I love!

  • EARTHBENDING!

  • Wrong style :p Earth Bending comes from Hung Gar.

  • The little girl earthbender in the group does Mantis.

Man, I feel like such a dork.

  • In real life? I mean, they're all doing mantis.

Earth bending isn't Praying Mantis style, by the way. XD It's Hung Gar.

  • I know, but that little girl's movements are based on Mantis. I mean in the cartoon (I don't know her name).

  • o.o Hung Gar isn't related to praying mantis at all. It's a combination of crane and tiger.

    Where'd you hear that?

... You're talking about Toph, right?

  • Yeah, Toph. And I never said Hung Gar was related to Mantis. But Toph, an earthbender, does use Mantis postures in the Avatar cartoon, even though all the other earthbenders use Hung Gar movements. That's all I'm saying. I'm not stating anything at all about the actual styles themselves.

  • Oh, lol. I get what you mean then. Some of the moves in hung gar are small and mantis-y looking. (I would know, I do northern praying mantis!)

  • To be honest, I don't see a lot of similarity between northern Mantis and Hung Gar (my sifu was a Hung Gar and Bak Sil Lum stylist for decades before moving to internal styles about 30 years ago). Toph's movements are based on southern Mantis, though. Very different from northern.

  • Yea, they got small and abrupt movements. I think I southern is more aesthetically pleasing (to me).

Cool, I watched all the episodes and the extras and nothing mentioned that.

  • No the little girl in Avatar does to hakka mantis notice the stomps she does in the cartoon and her guard stance.

Hung Gar doesn't have a stance nor a guard like that.

The movements in hung gar are more open.

  • great.

  • Great mens. Great Style. Great video.

  • This is not Chow Gar. It is Lee Yin Sing's branch of Jook Lum mantis boxing. The first section of the form to be precise.

  • Capoeira and even Ninja were similarly practiced in covert ways, Capoeira developed by slaves who made it look like a dance practice routine instead of learning martial arts, where Ninja were peasants who used farming tools and readily available weaponry to defend their homes and families.

  • SPM is a Deadly Martial Art that was originally developed only to seriously injure or kill people. It was never intended to be taught outside of the Hakka People (Visitors from the North), and was deliberately mis-named Praying Mantis (which it has almost nothing in common with Northern Praying Mantis) to keep Government Agents from discovering it's true original purpose in life.

  • its freaking great but, i dont appreciate the footwork. i would say that this is their only idiosyncratic. i hope that it was cleaned up by now or else certain other stylist will have a field day exploiting this.

  • I've seen BJJ "In-Action", and agree that in a 1-on-1 situation, can be superior, but going to the ground is a bad idea if there are more than one person to deal with, as you can only take ONE person to the ground at a time... the others will be pounding on, choking, or joint-locking you out, while you've got your hands full with the first person.

Israeli Defense person said going to the ground is FATAL in a multi-person attack (against just you), and I agree.

FYI, BJJ origins is Mr. MAEDA.

  • uh..what? are you assuming that when i spoke about footwork ( in this case ) being a liablity that, i was referring to BJJ was one of the exploiters? in fact i believe every style has its limitations that should be improved upon. my counter for BJJ is my high low training whilst transitioning from stance to stance. that and cavity sealing with iron claw disipline.the heavy footfall of this style is too intrepidascious as my style tends to be rooted and tentative as a cat as it is responsive

  • Yes, many martial arts were developed by the poorer classes, who were usually also nearly enslaved by the upper class, so they had to develop ways to defend themselves covertly to keep Big Brother from getting any suspicions that they were training.

  • Who is the woman walking around inspecting everyone? Is she the Sifu? Who is she?

  • Sitai for woman master.

  • Very similar to CHU GAR SPM.

  • GOD this CLIP is OLD but its AMAZING...!!! SHEAR POWER AND CLASS

  • holy fuck... see that kid in the black tearin up near the end, AWESOME

  • This is the real shit, dam it looks crap.

  • this is the real shit not like the white washed kung fu we see today

  • 168.

Man you come right out of a comic book.

  • Holy crap, this footage is a freak'n gem!!! NICE!

  • Ancient pple look better while doing tao, dont know why i guess more serious during training.

  • Anyone knows where one can get this movie?

And is that "little guy" at the end who I think it is ??

  • Yep you guessed it.... its Johnny Depp alright.

  • I knew it !!

His range as an actor is truly amazing.

  • Wtf? If this movie was made in 1956, Johnny Depp wasn't even born yet.

  • You ignorant prick ! Bored, sad idiots like you obviously have no idea !!!!

  • This is genuine SPM - and is the form of Li Yin Sing. If you shallow non descript wasters haven't even the courstesy to show a little respect, go and waste your "sad" time elsewhere ...... Pathetic !!!

  • Oh forgive me great honorable afl168 for not knowing what honorable Li Yin Sing routine of copying an insect meant. I shall now go and have my blood sucked by the FLEAS of a thousand camels.

  • You sad imbecile ..... You probably don't understand the word do you ? Never mind you sad, boring person...

  • Your "name" says it all !!!

  • You obviously lack self control Snoop "DICK" etyDawq .... Never mind my sad friend.... Have a good life :)

  • If you are a fan of Southern Praying Mantis Kung Fu than you might be interested in seeing this video I made of Southern Praying Mantis 9th Degree

Grandmaster Henry Sue training his Masters in combat.

If you click on my name above you can take a look.

  • ok..

  • Taken from the Kwan Tak Hing movie "Huang Fei-hong xing juan hui qi lin (1956)Fei-hong Huang" aka "How Huang Fei-hong Pitted a Lion Against the Unicorn"

  • Where do you get videos like this?

  • i wish they had more of the old Kwan Tak Hing films. i'd like to see some of the shit from like the 30's and 40's.

  • kool i wish i can learn that

  • So beautiful I cant wait till I get to the forms like that

  • very nice the techniques and ma work reminds me of a mantis form belong to the tsiang family system, even though it is not.

  • Lets keep the comments on topic. Save your arguments for PM, forums and emails.

  • This video is not Chow Gar. It is the Lee Yin sing Pai Jook Lum mantis. The guy at the start of the clip is a sidai of my sigung!

The form is "Sup Saam Sau Faht" but done with a mixture of Bak Mei which was the practitioners previous style.

  • good kung fu !

  • the juk loom i learn is from henry po yee. the 3 step bung bo is in the vid we do that and the way they turn around too. we do that also.

  • Exactly. Both Lee Wing Sing and Lum Sang went into the same Temple ... LWS several years before LS.

Same hand ... slightly different interpretation by way of pre-existing physical attributes. Genetics if you prefer. LS was approx. 5'2" tall and 120 pounds. In the Hip Sing there are some photos of him and when he moved for real he presented a fast moving target only about 3 feet high.

  • If it wasn't for LS,no one would even know of LWS.One living off the fame of another after he dies. Why can leave LS alone, and see if LWS can stand on his own?

  • Not at all true. Lee Wing Sing was well known before Lam Wing Fay even went into (One of, not the) Kwangsi Jook Lum Temple.

Your history is way gapped out.

  • Looks funny to me...looks like he's teaching them a dance routine!! We just discovered China's earliest Boyband!!

  • your comments are so stupid.

  • Interesting, the first form looks sort of similar to what we call Three Step Arrow.

  • The Hakka arts are baddass and this does look like Gin Foon Marks "Three Step Arrow".

  • This video is actually Chow Gar, it is labelled improperly. Not a bad video though.

  • I'm not familiar with Chow Gar SPM, but if that is what this video is (as perpetratorkiller claims), it is also very similar to Chu Gar SPM.

  • This is the most awesome video i ever seen on SPM I love SPM

  • I took Jook Lum and none of that stuff was taught there

  • since this clip is from 1956 i guess u didnt

    then...

  • badass looks just like our forms. :) awesome to see that in a kwan tak hing (spell bad) movie. traditional hung gar and s. mantis in a 50s kf movie. i luv it.

  • Great video.

Tanglang is such a weid style, using quick and light power. The footwork is interesting.

  • Little guy is real and good.

  • Perhaps the Macow Jook Lum temple?

  • I only know of 2 films where Southern Praying Mantis plays prominent part - this film and invincible shaolin. So I dont know where to get more from but i'll try!As for the school its Jook Lum and it seems very similar to the Lee Ying Sing Pai.

  • don't forget....5 Deadly Venoms!!! They called it Toad style but of course it was Lo Meng's Chow Gar. Oh, there's also Killer Army, where Lo Meng uses South Mantis as his art and another one he did with Philip Kuo where they aided a general or something. Not much kung fu in the latter, but he shows some south mantis conditioning drills.

  • What is the name of this film and the other?

    Thank you

  • For completenesses sake, in the Avatar animated series Toph Bei Fongs style of earthbending is supposed to be based on Chow Gar Southern Praying Mantis. But... Well, that's distant relationship to the third power.

  • Any idea what school that was?

  • come on please, more where these came from

  • Absolutely amazing video

    WELL DONE

  • fantastic!

  • Now thats suppercool to see :D

  • I like the last half
