Love the guy and his message. However, the suggestion that hunger, thirst and healthcare needs can be solved with $20 billion is outlandishly ridiculous and impairs his credibility.
God loves us so much He lets us (and others) make our own decisions and live with the consequences. If you want to blame Him for not loving you because He doesn't stop you from making poor decisions, that's your perogative, but it doesn't mean He isn't loving.
That's not the point, is it? The point is that we have choices to make that honor the Lord, or dishonor Him. Caring for others, and meeting their needs, is one way to honor Jesus. Greed is idolatry - making yourself God instead of honoring God for Who He is. Just because our society thinks greed is good, doesn't mean that it really is good. God hates greed.
@CattButt Hes not saying what we have is wrong... far from it... he's saying that we should help the people that haven't got it, and that what we have we shouldn't take for granted x
The population is increasing too much every year. I don't need lines to be longer than they already are. I think people should be limited 1-2 children. We are releasing way too much carbon emissions as is.
If that's the way you want to live and die, that's your choice. It's a pretty miserable, self-centered way to exist for the few years we have to enjoy living and loving God.
The bible was written by men. It's just a bunch of silly stories of things that could never happen. It's the 21st century and we should know better than to still believe in things like an Ark that carried to of every species on the planet and Zombies.
Should we lie to the unsaved and tell them that they dont need Jesus to save them from hell, be loving people and let them burn? Don't tell your 5 year old kid to stop playing on the road you might upset him, let him have some fun be a loving father.
I love the guy, but his suggestion that $20 billion would cover all the needs of those currently without adequate food, water and healthcare is patently ridiculous. Bill Gates himself is providing in excess of this and making very little headway. Charity is essential, but will not ever be anything but a stop gap measure. Somehow we have to find a way for all to provide for themselves. Probably a pipe dream though - "the poor you will allways have with you."
In another video titled "Love wins", Bell says "Jesus rescued us from God." First, I want to say that this implies that Jesus is not God. Secondly, Bell is stating that the will of the God The Father is different from the will of God The Son. Seems to me that Bell grew up in a very strict household and now he is rebelling.
i have seen several of this guy's videos, i do not understand how this man gets negative feedback unless they are just bible hating morons. i am not even spiritual
@joelaready. when you say "{rob bell's}underlying presuppositions in his arguments are more dangerous to the American church" please explain what you think those underlying arguments are. Your comment seemed a little vague to me. Please clarify.
Rob Bell… you are an inspiration to all of those who choose to hear and your message will resound and be heard by many to come and the message God asked you to deliver will not be lost until He fulfills all His promises and grace us again with His presence…
Yes, we (Africa) are in need of resources, but as Rob states in this series (do yourself a favor and watch them all, not just a youtube rip-off of one or two), if you make a sacrifice to be seen, acknowledged or to ease your conscience it is not from God, and it doesn’t mean anything. Take a good look at yourself and ask yourself whether whatever you’re sacrificing, if it comes from your heart (God) or something else…
and we live more fulfilling lives than most people in “1st world” countries. We know and fear God, but we trust in Him and know that the hardships we face is but a stone put in our paths and we will overcome it with His grace. (The will of God will never take you where the grace of God won’t protect you) The scriptures (Matthew 7:4-5) say to first pull out the beam from your own eye before you try to pull the mote from your bothers eye, lest you be a hypocrite.
and although we have had our share of hardships and challenges, we are in less need of “saving” than most of the world. When I say this, I am referring to the majority Christian southern regions of Africa (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho etc.) where revival, praying and turning back to God and turning from our wicked ways so that God can come and heal our land (2 Chronicles 7:14) has been the central theme in our lives for a while now
Apparently, there is a miss-conception amongst most “1st world countries” about Africa and that we are a poor, Godless continent in desperate need of saving from our "barbaric" and “godless” ways. I encourage anyone to make the effort to do some research on us and I promise you that you'll be surprised. I live in Southern Africa (and have been for the past 28 years - born and raised here :-))
@kristopheraugust This would be the ideal, there is one problem though. Investing in a business or production of a product in some of the more unstable African nations is an extremely risky venture. Mostly due to the fact every time a new government takes control, you never know if your business is going to part of the "take over"...
@turnsouth there are so many ways to fix poverty, to help others besides just investing in Africa. help in your city, your country, or help an organization somewhere that you know isn't risky
@kristopheraugust@kristopheraugust When I said "we wouldn't have a NT," I was cracking a joke. I was simply stating the fact that a number of the books in the NT are letters from him, to churches that needed to be set straight.
@kristopheraugust When I said "we wouldn't have a NT" I was cracking a joke. Stating the fact that a number of the books in the NT are letters from him, to churches that needed to be set straight.
I understand that a lot of people aren't a fan of Rob Bell and go out of their way to make their feelings known. Well that's fair enough when you feel strongly about something no one can convince you otherwise.
But consider this: we all decide what to focus our spirit on. We can concentrate on the things we're bitter about, or on the things we love. Are you dwelling on resentment, or "what is good, what is lovely..."?
@cybersethxp in your list, "what is good, what is lovely..." you forgot the first one in the list. "Whatever is true" (Php 4:8). If it is not true, it is not good and lovely.
magine if Paul only associated with people like him, rather than going out into the world and correcting heresies in the church--we wouldn't have a new testament! I would also like to address and be sure people aren't "heresy hunting" Bell on this video alone. There really isn't anything debatable in this video (other than the potential underlying Kingdom-Now Theology). When taken into context with the rest of the series we start to see the heresy in Bell's newly defined Gospel.
So we DO have money to for them?? why dont we hold off on the fat-sickles(ice cream) and give the money we WOULDVE spent on ice cream and give it to those peope?!!?
I don't understand how anybody could hear facts like this and then want to compare the person who speaks them to the devil. You know what, I don't care if he was wearing horns and carrying a pitchfork. This video is going to make me do something charitable. It makes me want to help people, it makes me cry.
The US Census Bureau says that there are 18,423,737 people in the US that are employed by the ice cream industry. Multiply that by the average household size (2.5), and you get 46,059,342 people that would have nothing if we stopped eating ice cream...
@igotask8board whats wrong with that?? dont you think that they need the hope? Gods gifts will make them rich in their own way that money cant even compare :D
@sethdadrumma Rob Bell is a deceiver of the truth. "For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil." Ecc. 12:14
@Freegrace1 Rob Bell will continue his mission "Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil." Ecc. 8:11
His videos are defetenetly Christian. Social Justice is in the Bible people. However, I've read the critics on Bell's works, such as Elvis Velvet and Christianity Today and they are unbiblical and unchristian. In between the lines he is writting things such as: the bible is man-made, we are not sinners, and God needs us instead of the other way around... more over, he is starting a new doctrine.. is it really necessary?
Eric, it sounds like you miss the point of being a christian, and I believe you get it... be careful what we're saying about other christians, they're not the enemy, satan is the enemy.
Yes, Satan is the enemy, but if that enemy has been allowed to sneak a false teaching within the setting of Christianity then something needs to be said. Its seems more to me that Rob misses the point of Christianity. Its about saving souls from Hell through Jesus Christ. Rob's theology is horribly lacking. And since Pastors are held to a higher standard it would behoove Rob is dig a bit deeper than he has.
@Eric0873 all Rob is doing is taking the simple things we do everyday, the stuff we do without even noticing and showing us how we take them and use them to better ourselves and be closer to the kind of people God wants us to be. to make God part of our daily lives and in everything we are
What really stuck out to me that he says is that "experts say that it would take $20 billion to provide water, basic health care & nutrition to everyone in the world" yet our own gov't can't seem to come up with a health care bill for approximately 30 million people in America for under a trillion dollars! It really shows the waste in the U.S. and our government, but more importantly, Rob Bell certainly can't be for this health care bill after knowing this info about 20 billion.
I agree with this but I think "Maybe what we have is enough" doesn't take it far enough. What we have is MORE than enough. A lot of what we have of others, and THEN we say they don't deserve to reap the benefits along side us? People might be more willing to believe in a God if people who claimed to follow God weren't so fast to forget the love aspect. Making someone dependent on you is not love; love would give them what they need to take care of themselves even if it means losing power.
I am really tired of hearing how ashamed I should be for the blessings we have experience here in the United States. You can motivate people to give without using the US as your whipping boy. How about pointing out what an example we are in private giving, volunteerism and general liberty that no other nation in the worlds history has experienced. How about pointing out how much of the world's food supply we provide... We are not perfect, but we also should not be ashamed of God's Blessings.
If you're more worried about feeling ashamed of owning things than you are worried about someone else's needs being met, I think you really need to reevaluate your priorities. You are right to say we're not perfect, but imperfection isn't an excuse to not strive for excellence. My opinion? Private giving is fine, but let's be real: are we teaching people to fish or are we just putting a fish in their hands? I think we do the latter and on a national scale, most of the world does that.
The message of this video is far from 'shame' hopefully you will rewatch it with open ears and an open heart and not feel like the video is to 'guilt' people into anything. I think too often we go through life oblivious of all this, this video is a great reminder, and a great tool to keep me asking God what my role is in his Kingdom. It's not how I can involve God into my tiny story, it's how God loves us so much that he creates room for us in his huge plan.
You have to watch the entire 15 minute 'rich' video to get the full scope of what he is saying..He does in fact make several Biblical references that you just are not going to get in a 1:30 clip..If you feel Rob Bell is so theologically off base Mako, why spend your time seeking out these clips..Spend you time more productively with scholars that you feel are more in line with your perception of Biblical truths..Its just not healthy or productive to argue with your brothers & sisters
Imagine if Paul only associated with people like him, rather than going out into the world and correcting heresies in the church--we wouldn't have a new testament! I would also like to address and be sure people aren't "heresy hunting" Bell on this video alone. There really isn't anything debatable in this video (other than the potential underlying Kingdom-Now Theology). When taken into context with the rest of the series we start to see the heresy in Bell's newly defined Gospel.
@MrJt1975 It is always healthy to argue when it is an issue of biblical truth. Rob bell may have some decent points, but the underlying presuppositions in his arguments are more dangerous to the American church than anything we are facing today.
Thanks for your reply, Mako (shark reference?) ... My thought is that 'hearing' is not just a 'listening to words' thing. You comprehend something with all your senses, and with your heart.
I don't want to diminish the very real possibility that giving clean drinking water to someone who needs it is an act of kindness, of selflessness, of repentance, of sharing, or sacrifice, of loving one's neighbour, of humility, of quiet transformation, of friendship, of courage, etc etc ...
The Bible is clear - we are to serve the world in love. However, it is also clear that we are to do this in the name of and with the authority of Jesus Christ. All I'm saying is that Bell has the first part covered, yet has forsaken the second.
where is Jesus?! who cares if people don't have clean drinking water if they don't have the Living Water and just thirst for eternity in Hell?! what happened to EVERYthing being Spiritual?
Sinful humanity. One man, entirely God. One Judge. His righteousness accredited to our account, free of charge. Just repent and believe (Mark 1:15).
What d'you mean where is Jesus? Is Jesus not right there in taking care of the fatherless and the widow? Do you have to say the name Jesus audibly for something to qualify as being in Jesus name? And what do you mean - who cares - is that Jesus talking? Everything is spiritual - including providing people with clean drinking water. Watertight theology isn't worth a damn if we're not feeding the hungry. Sorry for spouting, but really.
... which resonates with me as something beautiful, and in the spirit of Jesus, if you want to make it an explicitly Jesus thing. And that to say to a thirsty person - I don't care about your thirst, and then to proceed to preach at them is an insult - well it would be to me anyway. Maybe this isn't what you're saying.
It is scary when people believe a person like this without checking his information. Stop just accepting this information and check it out! Don't blindly believe this guy, his numbers dont add up. "Experts say" is a great way to not give a source. COME ON!!!
Um, just so you know...that's not the mission Christians are given when they've first repented and trusted in Jesus! The world is actually going to get worse and the only One who is going to make it better is Jesus Himself!! Rob has a horrible understanding and low view of scripture! I'd follow him about as far as I could throw him. And I'm a little guy!
Then why is he so unclear on justification?? Why does he promote a social gospel that the Bible doesn't focus on? No, the only "better understanding" that Rob has is through his "rose color" glasses which makes Rob feel better about the god he's created in his mind than the One that the Bible describes and is about! I don't want Rob ending up in hell is all. Rob's not my enemy, but his teaching comes from the enemy...."did God really say?" Those type of teachings. Hence the prob w/ emergents.
@incubusy12 He is a worker of the devil. He decieves other into being more like God without the need or emphasis being put on Salvation. He rejects some of the main doctorinal issues in scripture. And as far as sin is concerned and how we all are under God's wrath until we repent and accept Christ's blood atonement for our sins. He ignores and slips by that truth. You end up with people who try to act like God but on the day of judgment will be thrown in the lake of fire. What a deceiver!
Yeah, statistics ain't knew..while you were practicing how to look better and cooler in this video at the same time you're trying to speak "the truth", a couple of hundreds are doing real stuff to help those who need it more.
It ain't knews that the US is the most self centered country in the whole world either. But everything the youth cares about now, is getting a new car when they turn 16...
"Experts say that in order to provide like water, basic health, and nutrition for like everyone in the world, they say, the estimates that it would cost something like $20 billion (dollars), which is how much americans spend in one year on ice cream." - Rob Bell
Huh? The US Census Bureau's population clock is around 6.7 Billion. So you're telling us that for $3 dollars per person - we all can be fed, drink clean water, and have healthcare? What - $3 a year? month? week? day?
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord... America has forgotten God, and turned to self-esteem and secularism. Despite that, we still give more aid to others than ANY other nation on Earth...even if you combine the aid given by several countries. Americans are blessed, and most are good stewards. I'm tired of all this "America bashing". The bottom line is that the churchdropped the ball, and let the government do part of their job(helping the least of these). Government has NEVER succeeded!
Please people do not post a comment if you don't really know what he is talking about!!!!!!, he wants to let you know that you really need to appreciate what you have even if you do not have money. That what God gave you has a real value
God does not condone having nice things, God does not condone people living in america. 92% of the people dont know if I drive a car, millions of people around the world dont know I have clean water, or money, and things, "blessed are the poor." I only get 700$ a month and I am greatful for that, God has blessed me. God will bless the other Several millions that dont have anything. I help out the poor and needy. With the money you get and the nice glasses and shirts and pants. you help the poor
Well, I'm Jewish and I'm allowed to Judge, so none of that "lest you be judged" bs, I get judged all the time. This guy is an idiot, I'm sure he isn't practicing what he preaches. The bible also says that things such as Insurance are sinful, to have a car you must have insurance. SINNER!!!!!
Its not a sin to have nice things, the king david was rich, King Solomon was rich. But this guy is not very smart, he seems to be a little off when it comes to Gods word.
Bell did not say that it is a sin to have nice things. He said that, if you have nice things, you are blessed, and you should take responsibility for the stewardship of those blessings with consideration of those others in this world who are not as blessed as you are.
Bell most definitely criticized those with greater wealth relative to their fellow man and in particular he dissed on Americans, attempting to cause the viewer to think ill of piggish and selfish Americans and to covet their stuff.
Having listened to every word more than once - I'm pretty sure Bell did not say those things. He recounts facts which are demonstrably nonsense, and then implies . . . what?
I agree with you that we are stewards, and that we steward what God has provided - to His purpose and our shared joy. You may infer that's what Bell meant - but its certainly not what he said.
And his sincerity won't make up for his lack of credibility.
Thank you Rob for doing your part by spreading our Fathers Love, as a child of God. You have used your creativity and uniqueness, designed by your creator to work as his servant and give back to him. Christians should support each other not point fingers and judge intentions.
Do not judge lest you be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. And why do you look at the speck that is in your brothers eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
ha um..i think anything that gets people interested in God and mesmerized by someone who speaks his word is a gift and a blessing. We are called as Christians to spread the word of the Lord and that is just what Rob Bell has devoted his life to doing. I also believe that Matthew 7 goes a little something like this..
People should just read/meditate on the Bible like it says in Psalm 1 and Joshua 1:8. If real Christians ( the Elect ) actually did this, we would not be mesmerized by little Robbie Bell Bell and his douchey glasses
Someone That gives praise to Jesus Christ is not Wicked, do they fall short of Gods perfection? Yes.
(douchey glasses? Bell Bell?)
I hope no one is sitting in your company, that sounds like mockery. If you are a christian than Rob is your brother through Christ and you are commanded to love him. A Christian should have a loving heart and a tamed tounge. If you are being spiteful you are sinning. we all sin, what makes you more pure than the next believer?
I just don't believe that Bell is exegeting the actual Word of God like he should be. I've read Velvet Elvis and SexGod and I just don't get it. What was he trying to say? I read Scripture and I get THAT - I don't get EmergentChurch bullsh*t and Rob Bell trying to add Mysticism and the Gnostic Jesus to modern day Christianity. I apologize for douchey glasses - that was an ad hominem logical fallacy
This is a comment es about the bullhorn guy video. It sounds pretty creamy and soft. The word says that Gods wrath remains on those who haven't recieved Christ and that we and the gospel are the smell of death to those who are perishing but the good news is He has made a way of escape a door if you will (Christ) for all who would call on his name and be forgiven and saved. PS There is a Hell and it's not unloving to worn of its existance.
That is true, but its all about the presentation. Non-Christians don't want to be warned of going to hell or anything, because it is depressing. Warning of it is not unloving, but if the message does not reach anyone, there is no point. If you preach about the love of God, which is much more powerful, people will be reached.
Here's another reason why non-Christians don't want to be "warned" about hell: Because there are no convincing reasons to believe in hell itself, and most people don't like being told that they deserve to be tortured for eternity by default.
Yet the scriptures tell us that the gospel told without the negative parts in it is not the gospel. If we don't preach what we are saved from, then we are not preaching the gospel. If we do not preach the gospel then we only preach what we want to believe. If we only preach what we want to believe then we are preaching nothing. Only Christ can save and the only way lost people can hear Christ is to hear the true gospel.
First thing I would like to say is that God wants to love you, he does not "want" to throw you in hell. I challenge you as a Smart guy to Read "The case for a Creator" it follows the "case for christ" You may find that their is more reason to believe in God than in scientific theories. Better yet, you may find that science fully backs up evidence of a divine Creator.
Their is no preaching or condeming to Hell in this book I promise. Just a thought for an open mind!
Having a relationship with Christ is not advocated by scripture. Jesus spoke of the Pharisees religion as "the stench of an open tomb" yes but does this mean we have to "reject religion"? How does that harmonize with James 1:27?
Why is there no mention of repentance which the Bible draws us to on so many occasions? Matt 3:1, 4:17... Acts 24:25,13:24...
You squishys get all your theology from Revelation 3:20 and ironically it's right next door to 3:19.
Are you right with God - heaven or hell? You are loved as God's special creation, but because God is all holy you are cut off from Him by your wickedness and under His judgment. The Bible tells of God's one solution: Jesus, fully God and fully sinless man, ransomed us to God through His death on the cross. He paid our sin-debt and rose from the dead as proof that He is the way and the truth. Be reconciled to God! Repent {turn from sin) and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.
You have to care about people's basic needs and them as a real person, if you want them to listen to you when you share the gospel. If all you care about is beating them over the head with the Bible, they will never listen to a word you say.
The only way to get people out of poverty is by educating them. They say it is better to teach someone to fish than to give them a fish; its because a fish will feed you for one day while teaching someone will feed them a life time. These videos are educating people ... and as you educate the world, you will have world as God intended; educated, wise and prosperous.
funny I don't remember him saying that "I never eat ice cream"
however, while you're at apparently criticizing him for being a hypocrite, possibly you could consider the idea that this guy probably does more for needy people and donates more to them than you and I ever do?
well if you're a christian than you believe that belief in Jesus lifts us from the sin that we all have and therefore go to heaven. And since Rob Bell preaches about Jesus, doesn't that count? I think so.
I find that he puts more emphasis into feeding poor and doing good to thy neighbor. It is not bad to feed the poor etc. It is a part of the lifestyle that one should have if one is born again - the FRUITS of the Spirit. What happens when you put emphasis on the FRUITS of the salvation through repentance and faith in Christ, instead of what brings forth the fruit i.e. being born again and saved in Christ through repentance and faith, you end up with a dead tree that will not bear fruit.
interesting theory but how do you get a potential "farmer" to want to take care of a tree in the first place unless you let them know that there will be fruit? If you just preach about how not having faith in Christ will send you to hell etc. you will not get many people on board.
They should hear that the trees who bring bad fruit will be chopped down and burned up. Not because of the lack of faith, but because their fruit is already bad. Christ is the farmer who wants to take care of the dead trees, only an outward source can revive them.
"Sure, but how many does he try to save from Hell?" he cannot save any1 from hell. only Jesus can, it's ok to be passionate about Jesus and Jesus last request from us was to let the whole world know of HIm, but letting them know is all. You can't persuade someone to turn to Jesus, and if you can, they're not a Christian. Jesus want's hearts not convinced/brainwashed heads. LOVE>>>>ALL...GOd bless you
I hope that people know he's not trying to like save the world with his videos, they're just supposed to be very thought provoking. He's just putting out what he has to say, the way he wants to say it, and people get mad when he doesn't do some good ole fashin preaching. If you want preaching, lets go to church, if you want rob bell to poke your brain, watch rob bell.
God has a set of laws (commandments and other laws)..we are not able to follow these laws by our own will...there must be a perfect sacrifice for our short comings...there must be shed blood to atone for our sins..God provided the perfect lamb to take our place...without spot or blemish..his son Jesus. Jesus was and is the perfect lamb who takes away the sins of the world. he was perfect for you and me. When God sees you...he actually sees his son and holds you to no charge! Great news!
Has comido algo hoy? 800 millones de personas no van a comer nada hoy. 300 millones de estos son niños.
Cada pocos segundos, alguien muere de hambre.
Cuántos cambios (monedas/dinero) tienen? En tu bolso o cartera? Cuánto dinero tienes en tu bolso ahorita?
definitely thought i'd share one of the best quotes ive heard about the Gospels
"Stage by stage, as one given sympathy, one lives the other man's life ,sees and feels things as he does slips into his language, and, by degree, into his thoughts- and then wakes up to find oneself, as it were, remade by the other's personality, so close has been the identification with the man we grew to love.
This is what we find in our own lives; and we find it in the Gospels"- T.R Glover
You have answered correctly and in doing so, have preached more Biblical Truth than I have ever heard from a Nooma video. Everything you just said is all this world needs to hear - and THAT is why I hate EmergentChurch tactics...
All people are sinners and need to have a saving relationship with God. People are made children of God when they repent of their sin, place their trust in Jesus Christ, and commit their life to Him (Genesis 1:26,27; 3:1,24; Romans 3:25; 5:12-18; 1 John 1:8).
The Elect are here on the earth. We have ears to hear. We have eyes to see. We will not be deceived. Matthew 24:24. Keep comin' with your EmergentChurch rhetoric. We'll keep refuting it.
If he was a True Born Again Christian and truly saved, he would only want to articulate God's Truth about Grace, Forgiveness, REPENTANCE, sin, Jesus Christ's substitutionary death, and Election. Instead, we get cute little bromides and platitudes about beach balls, his son, a trampoline, etc. He is NOT teaching/preaching God's Word. If he was, we'd be hearing good expository, verse by verse preaching.
Wow ... you can see inside this man's soul? That's a dangerous position to put yourself in. Have you considered that perhaps Rob's approach is more in line with reaching a post-modern world?
What does Post-Modern mean? You sound like an EmergentChurch cult member. People still need to hear the True Gospel of Jesus Christ which includes our sin nature, Jesus's death on the Cross, His Resurrection, and God's Sovereignty and Power to save those who are lost. I never hear this dude speak of such things. I guess Jesus dying on the Cross naked, bloody and beaten is not cool enough for the Post-Modern world of Generation X,Y
o.k. Try this verse out for size, see if it fits: Ezekiel 16:49 " 'Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy."
I agree that we should Love our neighbor as ourself and help the poor. James 1:27 says pure and undefiled religion is to visit orphans and widows in their distress. BUT, you can do these things all day long and STILL be lost and end up in the Lake of Fire. The Social Gospel is good - but it does not lead men to repentance
Uh, dude, Jesus spoke in parables to hide stuff from the crowds - he DIDN'T want them( the Jews) to understand what He was saying. It was the fulfillment of the Isaiah 6 prophecy. Jesus did NOT use object lessons to teach the people - he used them to HIDE the Truth from that generation. If u can pull yourself away from these nooma things read Matthew 13:10-17. It's all in there...
Isn't part of the point he says WE are so rich? It's a reflective and inclusive message - because we are. This is not a from-the-pulpit fire and brimstone message. This message resonates with me because it's logical and completely valid.
I voted for Obama, but I can concede that Sarah and Todd Palin generally are rather charitable people despite my political dislike of them. So my point is it's not our place to judge the works of others. Bell's not judging us, he's just enlightening.
I bet Rob Bell gives a fair share of his money and time to many of these people he is referring to. The point is not to make us feel bad and give away everything we have, but it is to assess our situations and give accordingly. God has called some of us to give a lot, and others a little, while some are called to actually go and serve. My prayer is that we would all figure out what God has called us to do.

Rob Bell… you are an inspiration to all of those who choose to hear and your message will resound and be heard by many to come and the message God asked you to deliver will not be lost until He fulfills all His promises and grace us again with His presence…
TheTrueHimken 1 year ago
Yes, we (Africa) are in need of resources, but as Rob states in this series (do yourself a favor and watch them all, not just a youtube rip-off of one or two), if you make a sacrifice to be seen, acknowledged or to ease your conscience it is not from God, and it doesn’t mean anything. Take a good look at yourself and ask yourself whether whatever you’re sacrificing, if it comes from your heart (God) or something else…
TheTrueHimken 1 year ago
and we live more fulfilling lives than most people in “1st world” countries.
TheTrueHimken 1 year ago
and although we have had our share of hardships and challenges, we are in less need of “saving” than most of the world. When I say this, I am referring to the majority Christian southern regions of Africa (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho etc.) where revival, praying and turning back to God and turning from our wicked ways so that God can come and heal our land (2 Chronicles 7:14) has been the central theme in our lives for a while now
TheTrueHimken 1 year ago
Apparently, there is a miss-conception amongst most “1st world countries” about Africa and that we are a poor, Godless continent in desperate need of saving from our "barbaric" and “godless” ways. I encourage anyone to make the effort to do some research on us and I promise you that you'll be surprised. I live in Southern Africa (and have been for the past 28 years - born and raised here :-))

@kristopheraugust This would be the ideal, there is one problem though. Investing in a business or production of a product in some of the more unstable African nations is an extremely risky venture. But consider this: we all decide what to focus our spirit on. We can concentrate on the things we're bitter about, or on the things we love. Are you dwelling on resentment, or "what is good, what is lovely..."?

elnoahr 2 years ago
Yes, Satan is the enemy, but if that enemy has been allowed to sneak a false teaching within the setting of Christianity then something needs to be said. Its seems more to me that Rob misses the point of Christianity. Its about saving souls from Hell through Jesus Christ. Rob's theology is horribly lacking. And since Pastors are held to a higher standard it would behoove Rob is dig a bit deeper than he has.

@Eric0873 all Rob is doing is taking the simple things we do everyday, the stuff we do without even noticing and showing us how we take them and use them to better ourselves and be closer to the kind of people God wants us to be. to make God part of our daily lives and in everything we are
cooookiemonsterrrrrr 1 year ago
What really stuck out to me that he says is that "experts say that it would take $20 billion to provide water, basic health care & nutrition to everyone in the world" yet our own gov't can't seem to come up with a health care bill for approximately 30 million people in America for under a trillion dollars! It really shows the waste in the U.S. and our government, but more importantly, Rob Bell certainly can't be for this health care bill after knowing this info about 20 billion.
GenevaPilgrim 2 years ago
I agree with this but I think "Maybe what we have is enough" doesn't take it far enough. What we have is MORE than enough. A lot of what we have of others, and THEN we say they don't deserve to reap the benefits along side us? People might be more willing to believe in a God if people who claimed to follow God weren't so fast to forget the love aspect. Making someone dependent on you is not love; love would give them what they need to take care of themselves even if it means losing power.
chocochiquita86 2 years ago
I am really tired of hearing how ashamed I should be for the blessings we have experience here in the United States. You can motivate people to give without using the US as your whipping boy. How about pointing out what an example we are in private giving, volunteerism and general liberty that no other nation in the worlds history has experienced. How about pointing out how much of the world's food supply we provide... We are not perfect, but we also should not be ashamed of God's Blessings.
christiaandavid1 2 years ago
If you're more worried about feeling ashamed of owning things than you are worried about someone else's needs being met, I think you really need to reevaluate your priorities. You are right to say we're not perfect, but imperfection isn't an excuse to not strive for excellence. My opinion? Private giving is fine, but let's be real: are we teaching people to fish or are we just putting a fish in their hands? I think we do the latter and on a national scale, most of the world does that.
chocochiquita86 2 years ago 2
The message of this video is far from 'shame' hopefully you will rewatch it with open ears and an open heart and not feel like the video is to 'guilt' people into anything. I think too often we go through life oblivious of all this, this video is a great reminder, and a great tool to keep me asking God what my role is in his Kingdom. It's not how I can involve God into my tiny story, it's how God loves us so much that he creates room for us in his huge plan.
simpinazor 2 years ago
You have to watch the entire 15 minute 'rich' video to get the full scope of what he is saying..He does in fact make several Biblical references that you just are not going to get in a 1:30 clip..If you feel Rob Bell is so theologically off base Mako, why spend your time seeking out these clips..Spend you time more productively with scholars that you feel are more in line with your perception of Biblical truths..Its just not healthy or productive to argue with your brothers & sisters

joelaready 11 months ago
Thanks for your reply, Mako (shark reference?) ... My thought is that 'hearing' is not just a 'listening to words' thing. You comprehend something with all your senses, and with your heart.
I don't want to diminish the very real possibility that giving clean drinking water to someone who needs it is an act of kindness, of selflessness, of repentance, of sharing, or sacrifice, of loving one's neighbour, of humility, of quiet transformation, of friendship, of courage, etc etc ...
verityandstu 2 years ago
Yes, shark reference (I was younger, lol).
The Bible is clear - we are to serve the world in love. However, it is also clear that we are to do this in the name of and with the authority of Jesus Christ. All I'm saying is that Bell has the first part covered, yet has forsaken the second.
Mako0248 2 years ago
ok...social gospel = cute
where is Jesus?! who cares if people don't have clean drinking water if they don't have the Living Water and just thirst for eternity in Hell?! what happened to EVERYthing being Spiritual?
Sinful humanity. One man, entirely God. One Judge. His righteousness accredited to our account, free of charge. Just repent and believe (Mark 1:15).
Mako0248 2 years ago
What d'you mean where is Jesus? Is Jesus not right there in taking care of the fatherless and the widow? Do you have to say the name Jesus audibly for something to qualify as being in Jesus name? And what do you mean - who cares - is that Jesus talking? Everything is spiritual - including providing people with clean drinking water. Watertight theology isn't worth a damn if we're not feeding the hungry. Sorry for spouting, but really.

incubusy12 1 year ago
Then why is he so unclear on justification?? Why does he promote a social gospel that the Bible doesn't focus on? No, the only "better understanding" that Rob has is through his "rose color" glasses which makes Rob feel better about the god he's created in his mind than the One that the Bible describes and is about! I don't want Rob ending up in hell is all. Rob's not my enemy, but his teaching comes from the enemy...."did God really say?" Those type of teachings. Hence the prob w/ emergents.
Eric0873 1 year ago
@incubusy12 He is a worker of the devil. He decieves other into being more like God without the need or emphasis being put on Salvation. He rejects some of the main doctorinal issues in scripture. And as far as sin is concerned and how we all are under God's wrath until we repent and accept Christ's blood atonement for our sins. He ignores and slips by that truth. You end up with people who try to act like God but on the day of judgment will be thrown in the lake of fire. What a deceiver!

Bell did not say that it is a sin to have nice things. He said that, if you have nice things, you are blessed, and you should take responsibility for the stewardship of those blessings with consideration of those others in this world who are not as blessed as you are.
JohnNoZ35 2 years ago
Bell most definitely criticized those with greater wealth relative to their fellow man and in particular he dissed on Americans, attempting to cause the viewer to think ill of piggish and selfish Americans and to covet their stuff.
Djorgeful 2 years ago
Having listened to every word more than once - I'm pretty sure Bell did not say those things. He recounts facts which are demonstrably nonsense, and then implies . . . what?
I agree with you that we are stewards, and that we steward what God has provided - to His purpose and our shared joy. You may infer that's what Bell meant - but its certainly not what he said.
And his sincerity won't make up for his lack of credibility.

ha um..i think anything that gets people interested in God and mesmerized by someone who speaks his word is a gift and a blessing. hannahleighbruce 2 years ago
People should just read/meditate on the Bible like it says in Psalm 1 and Joshua 1:8. If real Christians ( the Elect ) actually did this, we would not be mesmerized by little Robbie Bell Bell and his douchey glasses

I hope no one is sitting in your company, that sounds like mockery. If you are a christian than Rob is your brother through Christ and you are commanded to love him. I apologize for douchey glasses - that was an ad hominem logical fallacy
pockmarkedbuttocks 2 years ago
This is a comment es about the bullhorn guy video. It sounds pretty creamy and soft. The word says that Gods wrath remains on those who haven't recieved Christ and that we and the gospel are the smell of death to those who are perishing but the good news is He has made a way of escape a door if you will (Christ) for all who would call on his name and be forgiven and saved. PS There is a Hell and it's not unloving to worn of its existance.
Habakkuksaid 3 years ago
That is true, but its all about the presentation. Non-Christians don't want to be warned of going to hell or anything, because it is depressing. Warning of it is not unloving, but if the message does not reach anyone, there is no point. If you preach about the love of God, which is much more powerful, people will be reached.
pbmaster123 3 years ago 2
Here's another reason why non-Christians don't want to be "warned" about hell: Because there are no convincing reasons to believe in hell itself, and most people don't like being told that they deserve to be tortured for eternity by default.
ErikWithBrain 2 years ago
Yet the scriptures tell us that the gospel told without the negative parts in it is not the gospel. If we don't preach what we are saved from, then we are not preaching the gospel. If we do not preach the gospel then we only preach what we want to believe. If we only preach what we want to believe then we are preaching nothing. Only Christ can save and the only way lost people can hear Christ is to hear the true gospel.
stevestutz 2 years ago

Repent and God be saved.

Was going to type "God will save you" I didn't delete enough!
My mistake.
redmattuk 3 years ago
Think his theology is wrong and he's sending alot of people to Hell with his unbiblical doctrine, but he sure is right about this!
redmattuk 3 years ago
Your statement is rather over the top. Dig a little deeper and you may find that he's right more often than not.
Finz7 3 years ago

Yo Little Robbie Bell Bell, how much did that 35mm film cost that you shot this nooma video with? Ohhh!

And this guy never eats ice cream? right
nilzor 3 years ago
funny I don't remember him saying that "I never eat ice cream"
however, while you're at apparently criticizing him for being a hypocrite, possibly you could consider the idea that this guy probably does more for needy people and donates more to them than you and I ever do?
AlecW1234 3 years ago
Sure, but how many does he try to save from Hell?
nilzor 3 years ago
well if you're a christian than you believe that belief in Jesus lifts us from the sin that we all have and therefore go to heaven. And since Rob Bell preaches about Jesus, doesn't that count? I think so.
AlecW1234 3 years ago
I find that he puts more emphasis into feeding poor and doing good to thy neighbor. It is not bad to feed the poor etc. It is a part of the lifestyle that one should have if one is born again - the FRUITS of the Spirit. What happens when you put emphasis on the FRUITS of the salvation through repentance and faith in Christ, instead of what brings forth the fruit i.e. being born again and saved in Christ through repentance and faith, you end up with a dead tree that will not bear fruit.
nilzor 3 years ago
interesting theory but how do you get a potential "farmer" to want to take care of a tree in the first place unless you let them know that there will be fruit? If you just preach about how not having faith in Christ will send you to hell etc. you will not get many people on board.
AlecW1234 3 years ago
And a "tree" without a "farmer" also won't get planted in the first place.
AlecW1234 3 years ago
They should hear that the trees who bring bad fruit will be chopped down and burned up. Not because of the lack of faith, but because their fruit is already bad. Christ is the farmer who wants to take care of the dead trees, only an outward source can revive them.
nilzor 3 years ago
I don't disagree with you with that particular point and honestly I don't think Rob Bell would either.
AlecW1234 3 years ago

Great news!

popzipsnap 3 years ago
Tú y yo podemos ir al fregadero, sacamos un vaso, y instantemente tenemos algo para beber. Cientos de millones de personas del mundo nos mirarían hacer eso y pensarían, Qué sueño, qué bueno para aquella persona.

I have a question for all EmergentChurch Children : How does someone become a True Born-Again Christian?
TheStyleHammer 3 years ago
All people are sinners and need to have a saving relationship with God. People are made children of God when they repent of their sin, place their trust in Jesus Christ, and commit their life to Him (Genesis 1:26,27; 3:1,24; Romans 3:25; 5:12-18; 1 John 1:8).

Why do Christians fight a dead enemy called "Modernity"?
antradox 3 years ago

If he was, we'd be hearing good expository, verse by verse preaching.
pockmarkedbuttocks 3 years ago
Wow ... you can see inside this man's soul? That's a dangerous position to put yourself in. Have you considered that perhaps Rob's approach is more in line with reaching a post-modern world?
Finz7 3 years ago
What does Post-Modern mean? You sound like an EmergentChurch cult member. People still need to hear the True Gospel of Jesus Christ which includes our sin nature, Jesus's death on the Cross, His Resurrection, and God's Sovereignty and Power to save those who are lost. I never hear this dude speak of such things. I guess Jesus dying on the Cross naked, bloody and beaten is not cool enough for the Post-Modern world of Generation X,Y
TheStyleHammer 3 years ago
o.k. Try this verse out for size, see if it fits: Ezekiel 16:49 " 'Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy."
eriksten 3 years ago
I agree that we should Love our neighbor as ourself and help the poor. James 1:27 says pure and undefiled religion is to visit orphans and widows in their distress. BUT, you can do these things all day long and STILL be lost and end up in the Lake of Fire. The Social Gospel is good - but it does not lead men to repentance

Like Jesus, the best verse by verse expositor ever who never used object lessons.
oceanswell3 2 years ago

Markipelago 3 years ago
I bet Rob Bell gives a fair share of his money and time to many of these people he is referring to. The point is not to make us feel bad and give away everything we have, but it is to assess our situations and give accordingly. God has called some of us to give a lot, and others a little, while some are called to actually go and serve. My prayer is that we would all figure out what God has called us to do.
