A beautiful version of one of my favorite songs! I hadn't heard this until now, nor was I familiar with Al Bowlly. Thanks a million for posting this and making more of us aware of him. What a great record!
Poor old Al Bowlly......on 16 April 1941 he had appeared in a show in High Wycombe then returned to his flat in Jermyn Street, London (close to Piccadilly Circus) - it was late at night he was very tired, too tired to go to the air raid shelter when the sirens sounded. He lay on his bed in his top floor flat reading a book, ignoring the bombs falling close by. A Nazi German landmine exploded outside his flat & he was instantly killed by the blast but there was no sign of injury on his body.
One of the classics! Nobody did it better than Al Bowlly either. In fact, every song ever sung by Al was the best version of that song. Not many recording artists you could say that about, hey?
Al was the one and only crooner , my mum was staying at my aunties in the next street when he got killed....blew her windows out and blow away the original sound of Al Bowlly.....RIP.
there are few who will ever match Ray Noble and the New Mayfair Dance Band . . . and of course they had intelligible songs to perform . . . and rhythm!
I'll throw a stick in the pot. While good, this gentlemen is not in the same world as real crooner's. Notably Mr. Crosby and Mr. Jolson to name a couple. What do you think?
@kingofpwnage92 Another misguided and uninformed opinion heard from. This one must be formed via a deaf ear. Bowlly compared to Crosby - - -Impossible. Bowlly was not even in the theater,
@navydoctrinidad I admire your ability to recognize true genius and openly commend me on a forum such as this. That is your victory of the day. Although I am confused what "bottom" you reached? Was it the bottom of a bottle or that of a little boy? Condescending prick.
Another gold fish bowl sound, does more harm than good uploading these downloads. If people think this sounds great whats left.Tempted to put the real thing on but would be copied straight away.Poor Al!
I think the record speed is a bit slow, only because at certain points his voice is abnormally low and even sounds like slow motion at times. Not the typical Bowlly voice.
For music lovers, I've playlisted over 111 years of pop music, year by year, from today back to the 1880s. Listen to the sounds of any past year as if you were back in the day, with just the click of your mouse.
@sillsla - Just click on my channel ID here, there are nearly 500 playlists now. Each of over 300 artists (including Al here) have a playlist, and they run up to 2 hours each. Al is regarded as one of the very first crooners! Chuck
Al Bowlly sounds more than a little like Al Jolson in this rendition!
Not a criticism. Just an observation. Both were great.

Great vocalising, but seems to be imitating Al Joson's version or style.

navydoctrinidad 1 year ago
@navydoctrinidad I disagree, good sir. Al Bowlly blows away the likes of Mr. Jolson and Mr. Crosby. However I respect your opinion.
Bloozboy91 1 year ago
@Bloozboy91 That is what it is all about. Two opinions that may never meet but always discussed. Happy Holidays.

@navydoctrinidad Crosby, Sinatra, Darin, to name a few, simply wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Al.

@navydoctrinidad No one cares how much of a hard on you have for Crosby. Let the guy have his opinion and you have yours, Jackass.

Al Bowlly is the best crooner who ever lived. He's so far ahead of anyone else that they're not even in the frame.
Al is the Don Bradman of 1930s music. If you don't know who Don Bradman is, please ask and I'll tell you.

Great tune, but I do think that perhaps the xylophone involvement could have been a bit .. less profound and maybe a little more evenly spread out
