Dear Betty: On the printed recipe there are 2 butter items. One at the beginning when you boil the sugars etc. and a 2nd butter added at the end. I think the butter is supposed to be added last. Also, dampen your hands with cold water to form the balls. Water works better than butter and is less messy. I thought it might make the pop corn balls soggy but it does not.
This looks just like the popcorn balls recipe my Grandma Ann used to make and hand out at Halloween. I miss her so much and I will definitely be trying out this recipe in her memory. I always felt sorry for the kids whose parents didn't allow their kids to eat the homemade treats. Once Grandma made a popcorn Christmas tree, she used green food coloring and candy stars for the decorations. Thank you so much. This is the first of your videos I have watched, I will definitely be watching more.
I know you said that the recipe needs corn syrup, but I can't afford to go get some.. Is there any way a water/sugar mixture would work at all? Sorry, but I've just been informed that popcorn balls are needed for an event...
As you know I have been suscribed to your channel for quite sometime and I love it :-)
I am just writing to tell you I had a little problem with this recipe. I followed it to a T but I couldn´t get to form the caramel balls. The popcorn just wouldn´t stick together. I ended up popping them into the oven for caramel popcorn but I would have loved to make the balls for a bday party. Do you have any idea what could have gone wrong ? Maybe it was too much butter , a humid day ?
As you know I have been suscribed to your channel for quite sometime and I love it :-)

@faariiea The recipe calls for hard ball stage. You can test for that by putting a teaspoon of the candy into 1/2 glass clear water. If you can form a ball (that holds together), then it is done. You will have to test several times. Don't get discouraged and take it up early!
@azngirl967 Corn syrup, which is mainly glucose, is used as a non-sweet thickener. High fructose corn syrup, on the other hand, is made of almost equal portions of fructose and glucose and is used as a sweetener. Fructose is a naturally occurring sweetener found in fruits and honey.
Thanku so much Betty they look yummy and i have to say Carter is the cutiest little guy i have 6 grandkids and another due in 6 weeks they are a joy Cheers Net
I like this recipe. So far I have only made chocolate rice puff balls which is similar to this one but uses rice puffs instead of popcorns. Thanks and happy Halloween :)
@portiasT123 I agree! Actually, a lot of people don't realize that the cooking syrup is much less concentrated in fructose than the syrup that goes into carbonated beverages, etc., so it's not really all that bad!
@bettyskitchen yeah.. cornsyrup isnt bad at all if you dont use a lot of in a small recipe..
what corn syrup does is to prevent crystallization when you're trying to make caramel.
because corn syrup is sugar but its a different kind of sugar then normal granulated sugar or normal white sugar...corn syrup is call reversed sugar i think.
Bah just use corn syrup. It's not like you're going to use it in everything you make. It's a treat, it's candy, it's not meant to be eaten all the time!
I just love popcorn balls. I hadn't made them in years and years though. I have never used this recipe. I am curious about the brown sugar and wonder if dark karo might work to...
My grandson who is also 4 loves to watch Carter....and sits and watches every field trip away with you guys. and every recipe..... Bettys kitchen is our fav subscription!

@PanderflyLUV You could use honey or molasses. You could try mixing 1 part sugar to 1 part water and boil it for a few minutes for a simple syrup.
