Actually they aren't as sane as they appear. When Japanese are against immigration, its usually not out of devotion to their culture or ethnic purity, but because they are scared of Chinese people commiting crimes. Sadly, even though (educated) Chinese are some of the safest migrants Japan is getting. Even within the far right, many Japanese see the problem with immigrants is not immigrants, but Chinese and Koreans only. While their policies may sound smart, the reasons aren't.

The Japanese retain at least 75% of their native blood of their land of Japan, anything less than 75% is not pure enough to retain strong native ties to your land, less than 75% (3/4) is Bi-racial (half-half), anything more than that is mixed race (holding at least three different heritages).

The Japanese are a mix race anyway. The blood lineage comes from Korea & China. The Royal family of Japan has openly admitted this. There is no such thing as pure, Japan is an island, which had immigrants coming from all over south-east asia. The language indicates this as well as their looks. I lived in Japan for 9yrs and I cannot understand all this stuff about purity, it's ridiculous. Even the Zainichi Koreans pretend to be Japanese with Japanese names. Fantasy!

@01avin I absolutlely agree with you that the whole 'pure' concept is misguided but sometimes I cant help but think that what if the reason why there country and culture seems so much safer then that of US might have to do with the harsh immigration laws?... it seems to me that for example in the US when foreign exchange students come here from japan they dont cause much trouble but in japan there is alot of complaint about how rude some of the US ppl..

On the surface Japan seems safer, but after living there for 5yrs there seems to different types of crime. You do realise the strong hold the Yakuza has in Japan and the manner in which they operate is very stealth like. My house was robbed as well as my best mates. Rape and sex crimes are huge in Japan, but due to cultural traits they do not report crimes. In the west we are taught to express and report such acts. Don't forget the sex world in Japan, which is unbelievable.

I do agree that Japanese tourist or students are better behaved in foreign countries. It's typical of their orderly behaviour, but on the other hand US students can be loud and extroverted, which does not settle well with the local Japanese. Ignorance levels are very high in Japan due to little exposure to foreigners mixed with communication problems is always going to create misguided views. Japan is great, but sadly their xenophobic Government is a little scary........

Your comparisons are biast. I lived in Jap for 5yrs and I couldn't believe the way the Japanese treated each other, especially men. You would think that a homogenous society treats each other better, but unfortunately not. I have lived in Australia my whole life and Australian's treat each other with better respect. After the floods in Brisbane the help was astonishing and Bris has a a 23% foreign population. By the way the Jap Govt has not helped the locals properly.
