why people still claiming free, since linux os (ubuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu) are unstable OS, and not compatible with must of the basic software, it can damage your pc, eg. fan speed operator! etc and since the price of your new computer includes the OS with a 99 stable and compatible software why go linux anyway, linux is for people who think they are smarter than anyone else!!!
@loregonbatan The "free OS" you received with your new PC was paid for by you. The price of your OEM Windows is hidden in the price of your computer. As for instability, Linux is stable if you install the stable version; Debian 6.0.3 (Squeeze) is rock solid, Debian Unstable (Sid) and Debian Testing (Wheezy) are not. Be patient and learn by visiting the Debian Users Forum, or go buy yourself a book about Linux and learn what it means to be free. As for "smarter", no, just inquisitive!
@loregonbatan by unstable OS, you mean stable. And by not compatible you mean free alternatives, and by damage your pc you mean fucking bullshit.
when you say OS with 99 percent stable and compatible software, you must be talking about macs. Because I'd take mac over pc any day, and Linux over Mac on most days.
@TheUniverseExists yes ubuntu is unstable!!! not compatible yes it can damage your pc there is a lot of free alternatives, in mac and windows, im a mac user!!! and in the end linux users always download the linux version of messenger, the linux version of this and that, must of the basic software you have in windows and mac, plus the countless crashes and screen freeze in ubuntu!!!
@chrisfur2 no im not a retard in fact im smarter than you, good luck with the linux version of office, linux version of messenger, linux version of every feature in windows, its like buying a new car remove the engine and get a "free" one not even compatible with gasoline, do i have to say more?
You don't seem that smart to me since you can't even get your grammar correct even when claiming to be smart.... So you come in here to Praise Windows and diss Linux? @loregonbatan well my friend..lets put it this way..you can get it made by a giant company that doesn't care about quality, "microsoft"..now this company is just showing flashy vulgar features..and its intensely fast with a basic user interface ..lets say a toyota..but when you first get it you have to configure ALL your drivers..tuning your os to make it work better..installing all the programs..knowing that eventually your going to get a virus..and slow down over time...
@313hummer paying $200 for the basics (which i must say doesn't come with aero enabled..or you can pay $ 250 for the pro version..which still has the same problems as basic..but just has aero and a few more features (jk..you can enable those in basic if you know what your doing) and costs 50 dollars more..and you can get ultimate..which "solves" all the problems of basic and pro which shouldn't have existed in the first place...you know how i know this? i used my college intuition...
@313hummer program to get all 3 (64 BIT) versions of them..then did all the things i normally do on linux (I ALSO HAD 3 DIFFERENT VIRUS PROTECTION SOFTWARE INSTALLED: norton, mcafee, and avg) i download TF2 ..chrome firefox..benchmarking software ..all at the same time..and it was just as fast as linux i must admit..but the thing is that chrome failed within 4 hours of me using it..ie (64BIT AND 32BIT) both became unusable within 2 hours ..due to windows updates...and loads of other..
@313hummer issues..ON ALL 3 VERSIONS! wtf is this shit..i'm lucky i didn't pay a dime for any of those versions because i would have sadly been mistaken! oh yea and about overclocking..i run my machine (amd athlon ii x2 3.0ghz, 8gb visiontek ddr3 1600mhz and msi gt430 OC edition) at cpu: 4.2 ghz memory:1600mhz AND WHEN I BOOTED INTO WINDOWS..GUESS WHAT? it didn't let me!! i had to downclock to 3.6/1333mhz ..it wasn't an issue with hard ware..it was windows becoming unstable..now..
@313hummer i'm currently on linux mint 11 right now..at the full overclocking sitting comfy and stable..havent had a problem yet...so windows fanboy here's a message for you: DON'T FUCKING GO AROUND ANNOUNCING WINDOWS IS BETTER WHEN IT FAILS AT 3 BASIC THINGS AN ENTHUSIAST LOVES TO DO COMPARED TO LINUX: system durability, overclock, and protect your files.
@loregonbatan how do you know that you're smarter than i am. and i know how to use those programs just fine even though i have no need for them. hell it took me longer to learn the windows programs than it did the linux ones. lol
@Linux4UnMe It loops to infinity while loading the splash screen. If I try to remove loading the splash screen from the 'e' command line, it will loop when it tries to load the Kubuntu 4 dot loading screen. But thanks for your quick answer. I will take a shot at Linux Mint. :)
I just started out with Linux using a Gentoo live dvd with KDE4. But as a n00b, I find it to be a pain in the arse to install, and I can't keep my settings saved. Is this harder to install?
@Flashingdemon666 Go to debian.org and download the Debian 6.0.3 KDE iso, burn it onto a CD-R and then reboot your PC and follow the simple installer instructions. Make sure you plug in your ethernet cable first to allow for updated file downloads!

KDE is so pretty, but i think that GNOME works fine, its more simple for beginners and the software for it are better. I tried Ubuntu and Kubuntu, and prefer Ubuntu, not for the visual, only for simplicity
fair enough.... whatever floats ya boat ;) Although I disagree about gnome apps being better than kde apps.... well... depends on what you are comparing... But I find the majority of default and common Kde apps far better than the default / common gnome apps in each category..... but thats my opinion......
@Linux4UnMe Well, i will test the final version of Kubuntu 11.04 to see it... the last version of kde I used was 2.x, now I am a fan of (Gnome) Ubuntu. May it be KDE 4.6 is better than last time. yer it is much much better than ever before....... 4.6 was the first release of the kde 4xx series that I have recommended to interested users.... rock solid. Not sure about Kubuntu though... they have never done a decent kde implementation
@Linux4UnMe Yes, was 4.2x... XD I want to try Open Suse or some Debian derivate. Do you have any good distribution with KDE for me? I prefer Debian derivates... apt-get is unique :)
depends on your current skill level in Linux..... ArchLinux is great......
apt-get is over rated in my opinion... you can do everything apt-get does in any other package manager backend just as well... if not better if we are talking about pacman etc.... but anyways.... Suse is good, Mandriva 2011 is coming, Magaei is coming.... but for now.... Mint 10-kde and Suse are the best.......
Hello. would you like to tell how did you record this video?? what comment on konsole, what app did You use? please write me back masterdany88@@orange.pl
I can understand if kde didn't run good on the netbook since intel's linux drivers are rubbish. What graphics card does your Desktop have? No problems on Nvidia cards on this end............
ah ok. You have intergrated graphics. That chipset is from around 2006 and I am not sure how good or how bad it peforms compared to a half decent Pci Nvidia card. Try disabling All effects and seeing if it improves next time you test Kde. Btw, if you tried kde on *buntu it wouldn't suprise me if it was slower, even mint 10 kde is slow. They don't package Kde very well compared to other distros. But hey... to each their own.... nothing wrong with Gnome
ah ok. Well that is very Strange indeed. I've never had a Problem dual booting Windows 7 with any Linux Distro.... Its hard for me to tell you what the problem is unless I can see your Partition setup and your grub.cfg file. I guess you reinstalled since then and are not dualbooting? if you do try to dualboot again.... lemme know... I'de like to know exactly how you set it up
@Linux4UnMe I have my whole hard drive used by windows 7, i just used the share with other sysyem, since I only use Ubuntu based Distros, I used Wubi, but it was too slow
ah ok. I have never bothered using WUBI before so I don't know how reliable or buggy it is.... and yer... it wouldn't run the same as it would installed properly to your hard drive. Ya might aswell go out and spend 50bux or whatever on a spare hard drive and install Linux to that drive if you are interested in experimenting with it. It will automatically setup your boot menu for Windows 7 and *buntu. I wouldn't trust Wubi. but Hey...it's your p.c ;) just a suggestion
The only thing that bugs me at KDE is that shitty fonts. Neither the default Deja Vu Sans thing nor the crappier Ubuntu font satisfy me. I just want so smooth fonts like the guys from Mac OS X have got. Otherwise KDE 4.6 is THE synonym for a perfect desktop.
yer I guess so. Although fonts have never really bothered me...... I havn't experimented with different fonts in Linux. There are lots of other things I can pick out that bother me though. hehe
sorry to be a pain m8 but um when i use recorditnow to record me screen it finishes encoding but doesn't play for long its like this i record for 5min it plays for 3sec then stops do you know what the problam is again im sorry to be a pain
Ok, first of all... I don't trust gui screencast programs because they are often buggy and cause the whole screencasting to be faulty. I use ffmpeg in the konsole because it is reliable, is not buggy and has never stuffed up for me. Forget about RecorditNow and RecordMyDesktop buggy frontends.... Watch my video on how to do it with ffmpeg. There are multiple settings to choose from but here is mine
i booted this from a usb and installed it the graphics r fucked really i mean everything is big on my 1920x1080 monitor & thats not all iv installed my graphics driver and its still the same i have a 9200 geforce can someone help me oh & it crashes on the splash screen were it sais kubuntu and the dots
open up a konsole from the menu and type in the following according to what resolution you want... lets say you want 1440x900... depends what your monitor's native resolution is...... but anyways
xrandr -s 1440x900
then go into the Kde control settings, look for monitor, and make sure it is set at the correct resolution
ah, you probably had an Xorg update too??? often the latest Xorg isn't compatible with some nvidia drivers until Nvidia update their driver...... the joys of having proprietary drivers in linux which we have no control over........
what nvidia card do you have and what version of xorg are you running?
If that is the case... the ubuntu devs should block such updates.... I'm pretty sure that LinuxMint block potentially harmful updates like Kernel upgrades, Xorg, driver updates....
@Linux4UnMe So whats your opinion as Kubuntu as a KDE distro compared with other distros. I know you prefer Arch, but sometimes I'm feeling lazy and just want to install a distro without having to spend much time setting it up...
I think that it's sad that the Kubuntu dev's don't get much help or attention from Canonical. It is a great
distro but the team has very limited resources and it overall affects the quality of the distribution. In saying that, I also really wish the devs would give Kubuntu a little more love and customise it instead of leaving everything default. It feels as if the kubuntu devs are just a bunch of Packagers and nothing more. Apart from that, it is an Ok Kde Distro and newbie friendly
KDE nowadays is so impressive! Different workspaces each with a different set of wallpapers and widgets.Different activities each with a different set of workspaces.Tabbing and tabbed applications.Unlimited customization!Especially KDE 4.6 rocks!So give a try to Kubuntu and you wont regret!
some how I feel that Kde experience is kinda slow compared to Gnome... but thats just my take on it ... having in said that every now and then I try out KDE on either fedora or kubuntu expecting a faster and smooth experience but just get disappointed. :P
KDE is more resource intensive........ but then again, it runs well on modern hardware...... I got 4 gigs ram, 3.0ghz cpu dualcore amd and it's perfect.... My specs are considered old these days and it runs great. If you got lower specs, just run gnome if you want a smooth experience...... I love Gnome too, but as far as I'm concerned...... kde is a innovative future Desktop where as Gnome is an Ugly Dog trying to compete in a competition where it is not even worthy. Kde ftw:)
@decodedthoughtDT Well, I was thought the same when i usedgnome, but after disablled some useless things, & uninstall kmail (lots of daemons runing for it), i can say works almost = to gnome on amd sempron 2 ghz 1 gb ram. I'm using now kde 4.6 and is faster. Only need to disable some services like bluetooth & others to get smooth kde, plus good ventilation
Concerning the Amarok toolbar: In the default toolbar there is a reason why you do not see those buttons. It is because they are on the left and on the right of the title of the current track. They are no longer buttons but text. In fact now you can read the name of the previous or following track.
Once I got used to that approach I liked it because now I definately know whats next, even if I misread something in the playlist.
lmao. weird... I had a Desktop and a Search and launch activity in "activities" but for some reason it kept switching.... ahwell. see how it goes in final release ;)
the dislike is from the person who prefers no gui :) kde looks awesome and it was a tossup between ubuntu 10.04 lts and the kubuntu lts 10.04 gnome won for now but hard to say later on. while unity looks interesting, I may go to kubuntu or arch with gnome or kde on it.
This looks really I will have to try it on my guest computer when it hits final release. I'm wondering though, what are the min resources required to run this distro?
well... ignoring the official requirements, I suggest you Atleast have 1 Gig of Ram Minimum, and atleast a basic Dualcore cpu. You could run the Desktop on Less, but it won't be as smooth.
@Linux4UnMe Thanks for the info, cause I was wanting to try it on my old single core 14in AMD sempron laptop, but I will try it on my dual core AMD AthlonII backup desktop, I keep in the guest room, and see how it runs, there, I know it would be hell on my 10in VIA C7M netbook LOL!

@Linux4UnMe well, i have a netbook, and both the netbook and desktop version are slow, i have a 256M graphics card and 1GB ram
TeruMikami2345 1 year ago
@TeruMikami2345
I can understand if kde didn't run good on the netbook since intel's linux drivers are rubbish. What graphics card does your Desktop have? No problems on Nvidia cards on this end............
Linux4UnMe 1 year ago
@Linux4UnMe well, my desktop has a Nforce x600
TeruMikami2345 1 year ago
@TeruMikami2345
Linux4UnMe 1 year ago
@Linux4UnMe Im a gnome user, and yea, i used Kubuntu, and with all effects disabled
TeruMikami2345 1 year ago
@TeruMikami2345
kde 4.6 is faster than the older kde's but yer.... Kubuntu is a bit meh. Arch, Mandriva, Suse, PcLos etc do a much better job at packaging Kde

@Linux4UnMe well, i need a linux that easily dualboots with windows 7, ans so far, all the ones itried crash my windows 7

@Linux4UnMe what do u mean?
TeruMikami2345 1 year ago
@TeruMikami2345
ah ok. Thought you was pulling my leg.............
What do you mean Linux crashes your Windows 7??? That is impossible....
Explain what you mean exactly?
Linux4UnMe 1 year ago 3
@Linux4UnMe Well, everytime I dualboot, it's fine for a little, then when I restart my computer it says: No such partition
Or something like that and I can't boot into either, on desktop and netbook
TeruMikami2345 1 year ago
@TeruMikami2345
I'de like to know exactly how you set it up
Linux4UnMe 1 year ago
@Linux4UnMe I have my whole hard drive used by windows 7, i just used the share with other sysyem, since I only use Ubuntu based Distros, I used Wubi, but it was too slow
TeruMikami2345 1 year ago
@TeruMikami2345
Linux4UnMe 1 year ago
@Linux4UnMe Its just a good thing i know how to fix it XD

@Linux4UnMe and i mean on my desktop computer and my netbook

The only thing that bugs me at KDE is that shitty fonts. Neither the default Deja Vu Sans thing nor the crappier Ubuntu font satisfy me. I just want so smooth fonts like the guys from Mac OS X have got. Otherwise KDE 4.6 is THE synonym for a perfect desktop.
ensignjoe 1 year ago
@ensignjoe
yer I guess so. Although fonts have never really bothered me...... I havn't experimented with different fonts in Linux. There are lots of other things I can pick out that bother me though. hehe
Linux4UnMe 1 year ago
@Linux4UnMe I preferr Droid Sans which is the font that Android also uses on my smartfone :)

@TuxNoBux
ah ok, nar thats cool.

TuxNoBux 1 year ago
@TuxNoBux
open up a konsole from the menu and type in the following according to what resolution you want... lets say you want 1440x900... depends what your monitor's native resolution is...... but anyways
xrandr -s 1440x900
then go into the Kde control settings, look for monitor, and make sure it is set at the correct resolution

@KaraZybk
ah, you probably had an Xorg update too??? often the latest Xorg isn't compatible with some nvidia drivers until Nvidia update their driver...... the joys of having proprietary drivers in linux which we have no control over........
what nvidia card do you have and what version of xorg are you running?
If that is the case... the ubuntu devs should block such updates.... I'm pretty sure that LinuxMint block potentially harmful updates like Kernel upgrades, Xorg, driver updates....

@Linux4UnMe So whats your opinion as Kubuntu as a KDE distro compared with other distros. I know you prefer Arch, but sometimes I'm feeling lazy and just want to install a distro without having to spend much time setting it up...
ecconz 1 year ago
@ecconz
Linux4UnMe 1 year ago
why windows always appear glued on the top-left corner?
it's an ergonomic disaster.
nowix56 1 year ago
KDE nowadays is so impressive! Different workspaces each with a different set of wallpapers and widgets.Different activities each with a different set of workspaces.Tabbing and tabbed applications.Unlimited customization!Especially KDE 4.6 rocks!So give a try to Kubuntu and you wont regret!

some how I feel that Kde experience is kinda slow compared to Gnome... but thats just my take on it ... having in said that every now and then I try out KDE on either fedora or kubuntu expecting a faster and smooth experience but just get disappointed. :P
decodedthoughtDT 1 year ago
@decodedthoughtDT
Kde ftw:)
Linux4UnMe 1 year ago 8
@Linux4UnMe yeah... I like KDE thats why I keep coming back to it. lol . I have 2.8ghz cpu and 2 gigs ram.
decodedthoughtDT 1 year ago

Once I got used to that approach I liked it because now I definately know whats next, even if I misread something in the playlist.

the dislike is from the person who prefers no gui :) kde looks awesome and it was a tossup between ubuntu 10.04 lts and the kubuntu lts 10.04 gnome won for now but hard to say later on. while unity looks interesting, I may go to kubuntu or arch with gnome or kde on it.

I like the menu. It looks like the mint menu but better.
The "places" and "system" buttons are at the bottom which makes it less messy than the mint menu I think.

This looks really I will have to try it on my guest computer when it hits final release. I'm wondering though, what are the min resources required to run this distro?
clays121 1 year ago
@clays121
well... ignoring the official requirements, I suggest you Atleast have 1 Gig of Ram Minimum, and atleast a basic Dualcore cpu. You could run the Desktop on Less, but it won't be as smooth.
Linux4UnMe 1 year ago
@Linux4UnMe Thanks for the info, cause I was wanting to try it on my old single core 14in AMD sempron laptop, but I will try it on my dual core AMD AthlonII backup desktop, I keep in the guest room, and see how it runs, there, I know it would be hell on my 10in VIA C7M netbook LOL!
