chaco, here we go with the who on what bulshit these 2 cats are keeping the tradition cuba the islands I play abig percussion setup ilive in cleveland an the disease of sorry comments is all around all i can say is karl an raul bless u guys and those who make so call re marks show them ur pay checks
call it a wood/jam block regardless of the name u want to use, what people are refering to is the patern being played called "clave" , in case u didnt know clave translates to "key" in english and its given this name as this is the key to unlock all misteries of ALL afro-cuban patterns as well as rythms, not only that it sets the direction the patterns are meant to be played wether 2/3 side or 3/2, son/rumba and for 6/8 clave only has 3/2 side never 2/3, but also aplies to pianos, bass, and more
I note the criticisms - so many great and famous percussionists jumping in there with their advice and guidance... oh wait - I never heard of any of you ? (with apologies to the constructive critics)
its alright johny, in the end it shows that we are all human even the goodones and can make little mistakes. I quite enjoyed the video regardles, nice yambu, love it when they sing in the begining sounds very cuban...love it, like cachao said "got to keep the tradition alive" and even though im not cuban and neither are the 2 of them it shows that if you got the soul can still sound cuban.
Both Karl and Raul are excellent percussionists, but I agree they over-reached on this one. Unfortunately, many percussionists these days are suffering from the "Octopus Syndrome", started in the 50s by an, otherwise, excellent percussionist: Walfredo de los Reyes Senior. It is economic, but at a cost to the corner-stone of Afro-Cuban rhythms (La Clave). This must drive old masters like Los Papines crazy, as they used one of their four guys for the past 60 years simply to preserve the clave.

Totally agree, I think it´s the same with drummers holding workchops etc, they often overdo it with pedals on claves or on small drumheads just to sound more complex than the other. Mostly they stumble and fall to me?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
he did make mistakes....but every percussionist makes mistakes all the time. even the best of them. it's about how you bounce back is what make you a great percussionist or musician. and karl did just that. as makotimbal said...people dream about doing what karl did in this video. all i can say is...practice makes perfect. and i'm sure karl has mastered it by now.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You are right, it´s totally difficult to play congas, clave and sing, most people can only dream about it. But if I were a professional, I wouldn´t perform that if I could feel that I do many mistakes. Nobody is perfect, you can´t find a person on youtube playing clave and different instrument without at least slight mistakes. I like Karl Perazzo, but this was too much..if you turn around clave but continue singing in this way for one minute without realising, there is a problem I think...
But guys, What is the problem? It's up to him to play that clave. I mean, Have you ever try to play that clave and sing at the same time? For me, He is playing good. I think It is great to see them. Raul Rekow is awesome, the man of hot hands. Guys, It is not that simple to play and sing. Think about it!
Give me a break....Karl is an extra class percussionist, but this performance...hmm....pointless to play quinto and clave simultaneously if you can t keep time..tension in his face speaks for itself...but the rest is good
Oh boy, I take my hat off to these guys. To the haters out there posting negative comments: who are you playing for? Man, these guys are amazing but they are human also.
Much respect to Paul and Karl..beautiful chants...But to be honest, Karl really didn´t hold that clave properly, he dropped off more times and around 2:55 he lost himself and turned clave around and was able to come back around 3:25..Percussionists are trying to be multifunctional these days, but time keeping is essential. But this was in 2000, I´m sure Karl is nailing that clave down today without problems..and his quinto solo was awsome...
They are performing two yambu (slow Cuban rumba)songs from the Afro Roots Album by Mongo Santamaria: "Yambu" and "Macunsere". Some big names on that classical fifties (!) record: Armando Peraza, Willie Bobo, Francisco Aguabella, Mongo of course.
wat i woulda done if i was the timbalero woulda been use the cajete pedal on the block and play the conga with the hands =D and yeah man cut him a break he's multi tasking ! =)
