Some would say that the Babylonians did before him, but that the strength of Pythagoras' results was in the generalization (whereas the Babylonians had a series of specific numbers etched in their tablets). Also, the ancient Chinese had a geometric proof, which the Greeks had issue with, though which still demonstrated the generalized results that Pythagoras is known for. Here's to multicultural mathematics!
