aw i love alex! too bad he died.. he really was like a little kid -3:)
i dont think you should clip their wings. i was reading and it said learing how to fly and flying makes them self-assured and more confident, so they have better mental health if their wings are not clipped.
I have one and my husband and I adore him. We can hold him like a baby. He flies if he doesn't see me. He is more my bird but, he does good with my husband. I love him like our children...Rhonda Smith
Wow, the people that helped Dr. Pepperburg have the best job in the world. I'd love to be able to help with Alex (well, Griffin now, since he's taken over the show.) :D
@nooloo3000 Dr. Pepperburg trained him every day of his life. She spent more time with Alex than most people spend with their birds. I think it was 6 hours a day she would spend with him teaching him words and numbers. And she did this every day since Alex said his first word. So if you put that all together, he got far more attention than most people give their birds.
i have the same bird name reeno and everytime we let him out he attacks us. like fying onto your heads and biting us and wen we go to feed him a treat like a nut he will bite us. is there anything i can do to make him nicer?
@z3rkerpure1 Ok heres an answer that worked for me,
Try clipping his wings, it will teach him he is not the bigger bird, nad therefor will rely on you to help him. and also cover his cage during nites and it can help him relax and help him sleep, these 2 have helped my cockatiel become very nice, but this does not guarentee you wont get bitten! if you want more info look at the channel: BHparrotwelfare on youtube and go to their website and contact them,
@FLIGHTSIMEXTREME - contrary to popular belief, you should only clip a birds wings as an absolute last resort. In my opinion, a relationship with a bird is one of mutual respect. If you clip a bird's wings, you break that trust. It's like cutting a child's legs off at the knees if they don't do what you want! Also, and very importantly, they won't get enough excercise if they are not allowed to fly. Put the time in and train them! Clipping their wings is the lazy way.
@sirhubert Ever since this winter I have been taking the best of both worlds. In winters I let them grow and in summers ill clip them.because then they can com.with me outside
@KimonoHire - A parrot's response to fear is to fly - if you clip a bird's wings, you take away it's ability to respond to that instinct. This eventually causes psychological problems and you end up with a biting or screaming bird that pulls it's feathers.
Poor Alex, every video he was in he always asked to go back! He was so smart, I'm sure he must have gotten tired of being paraded around and asked questions all day.
@jallejulle34 She never hit him with the keys, when she asks him a question about the objects, she brings it to him so he can touch it. Birds use their beak a lot and giving him the opportunity to touch it, lets him explore it.
R.I.P. Alex! I was so fascinated by Dr. Pepperberg's work with Alex that I began working with my Quaker Parrot when he was only 4 weeks old to identify colors, sizes, and shapes. It is amazing how smart birds really are. And how child-like. It is like having a perpetual toddler!
@Syykkogrl how cool your working with your quaker parrot. I have one, Sid, she is pretty smart, she shows me whats bothering her in the room and she knows quite a lot of tricks for a 2 year old parrot.
Birds are pretty smart and people think I am crazy lol.
Yes, It is amazing how animals and people are closly linked, but sometimes we don't know it or we don't give then credit
really amazing what he could do, but is it just me or is the lady feeding him a lil too many treats?? i dont know a lot about these parrots at all and im not saying shes bad but still it seams if he just says one thing u have to reward him

In a way, I wonder whether all of this research thing is of any point. Parrots don't need these research, they are what they are and they should live the way they are most content. Knowing how many colors what numbers what shape is our human way of measuring intelligence, but why' does it matter to the animals?
you're right, it doesn't matter to the animal. but the research matters to scientists, and dr. pepperberg. And in turn, will matter to the general public after seeing clips like this one, when people start realizing that parrots are capable of much more than the general public actually think. and in turn will perhaps treat birds and animals with more respect if not already so.
"human centric" or not, it still benefits not only birds, but all animals. By showing people these amazing acts of intelligence, they are hoping to make people see animals as more than objects!
This is very important research to make human kind understand that animals can show human intelligence. Alex is just like any other pet bird and he is being treated well. Of course he doesn't really want to "preform" for people, but that is just the same as a human making a dog do a trick... it's not mean or cruel, just boring to the animal... kind of like a child doing homework.
@alikokoro Actually, parrots greatly enjoy human interaction, so this wasn't "boring" to the bird. They need the stimulation, or they get bored without it, and start pulling out feathers and such.
Alex is very smart. I have a african grey named Kikki. She is 8 months old. She cannot speak like alex. :( He is a very intellegent, smart, beautiful bird. WE MISS HIM VERY MUCH.
Donate to the Alex Foundation if you want to prolong research into other intelligences. Her book is marvelous, called "Alex and Me". Its incredible, her own history as well, being a chem major, going to Harvard, teaching in Arizona, etc.

alex was relatively young for an african gray most likely because of the intensity of the stresses in his life.
