Precious substance, very important for transportation, which is only to be found in the desert, inhabited by a people which does await some Messiah figure? I sometimes wonder how much the fancy Dune tale is a parable on the modern world! The spice is the oil, the Spacing Guild could be compared to the multinational Oil Corporations, the empire to the US of A (recently they make a fuss about being an empire) and even the Baron Harkonnen could resemble a well-known banking baron.
@FireEyedMaidOfWar Considering that the spice was written as an allegory over the dangers of having humanity controlled by a single substance and that the Fremen are Sunni... :P
@makimachine: But if this is true then the Roman Empire must be re-established straight, so that there is a Pilate present in the region, so that he can if the Messiah should appear arrest him on the spot and send him to crucifixion!
4000 years part is BS, the year 10 191 is counted from establishment of the Guild, and the mutated navigators existed from the start. Film takes place around year 20 000 CE.
@arna11420 This should be 20,0000 years into the future. I really want to see a remake of the original Dune movie, along with the 2 and 3rd part of the book, including a proper movie about the Children of Dune books.
I don't recall how many times I've watched this movie, and the intro still gives me chills. I believe it's the aesthetics and the overall impression this movie gives you - it really captures the alien humanity that exists i the year 10.191.David Lynchs style fits perfectly for Herberts philosophical Sci-fi. Like a painting, you can watch it over and over again because what gets you is indeed the humanity and universe that is presented to you, rather than the effects. Truly timeless work.
oy. it just struck me as I watched this ( although I've seen it many times ).
Dune is like the middle-east with its oil? Not trying to start a political debate or anything... was just an interesting analogy to it that I never thought of before.
@StarSpawn06 This movie departed from the novel, that in 1984. People did not buy the concept. Even the director did not want anything to do with the movie because he was not given the artistic direction to give fans what Dune was all about.
yes she has grace , although we only see her face. if today a woman on the screen is suposed to be sexy they have to paint an arrow on her body pointing to her vagina. i think our culture has lost the true understanding of grace and true beauty mistaking it with beeing rigged and lechery. how boring. i love how this movie avoids to fit in .
In my opinion, this is the only good (read: passable) transfer of the books on the screen, although even this one has many flaws...
Biggest mistake in all Dune movies or series is total failure when it comes to showing Freemen culture and behavior (I still remember that miniseries when one Freemen was standing outside during storm with his shirt wide open, luckily,in this movie there are no such stupid mistakes).
@drunkenchan Not to worry, someone would have collected his water. Besides after the first book it wouldn't have been beyond scope to show such an action by a Freman, in contract the first book. The planet was not as dry as it once was, and by the time of God Emperor the planet was lush with vegetation, and water was not scarce anymore.
Well Brian Eno composed the music of this film. He is a very important musical artist and early pioneer of electronic, ambiant music. He's still alive and active.
@insanej3 Yeah well, Brian Eno didnt compose the music of this film, just a tiny part (the "prophecy" track if i remember). Most of the OST have been composed by Toto (the rock band).
They don't make movies like this nowadays I'm afraid... Nowadays all they produce are action, explosion and car race. Except for the LOTR the majority of movie productions are either comedy or action movie. Not a single movie has the potential of competing with the old movies which were done with much lower technology and still have their own magic. You know old Disney movies? Incomparable beautiful with todays Disney! Old movies FTW! Anyway... Love Dune, have it on DVD. 5* for the vid.
@VariusMayhem Yes, this was an epic movie, based on an epic novel. However, unfortunately the books were much too epic for the movie to do it justice. I'm just glad I saw the movie before reading the books, otherwise I'm sure I would have hated the movie, instead of allowing them both to stand on their own as separate works of art.
it kinda annoys me that they left out how the bene gesserit PLANTED the legends and prophecies on dune (and pretty much every planet with natives...). the whole thing was NOT a coincidence...
Lynch did draw a lot from the literal template, Me4897, so all the glory goes to Frank Herbert! But the treason is purely carried out in theory but well done in the movie! I love the Harkonnen lines: You done a good job traitor! Or when the traitor receives his fitting reward, a reward that every traitor should receive! But the philosophy is rather religion as Herbert uses Judaism and Christianity [mother with the son] and even the infamous camel merchant cult [whose name I will not utter here].
I kind of like the Dune movie despite the poorly done fighting scenes, the ridiculous worms and the sad fact that the Harkonnen loose instead of destroying the savoir and his desert rats of a chosen people. I wonder if, after Lord of the Rings, Lynch would today be able to avoid this by using computer animations; maybe, not considering what Lucas did to his new Star Wars trilogy with the new possibilities of digital animations...

Dune was to sci-fi what LotR was to fantasy.
Unfortunately the movie adaptations were rather slip-shod, so few ever realise the significance of Frank Herbert's work :/

Nevertheless, most exceltly done! I like the characters better than in the TV version, althought the TV version sticks closer to the book.
