mmmmm even though I think PJ's version is WAAAAAAAAAAAYYY better than Hey's, I dont think the comparison with a book is relevant: a book, you write it, it's written, printed and left to be read- the artistic act is over. With a song, once it's written/composed, there's still the interpretation (like for operas for ex, with partitions, nowadays we can still play/listen to Mozart's) - and interpretation is highly important. Songs are then a lil like plays: it has to be put on stage, INTERPRETED.
