A blow off valve won't do that, its turbo flutter on a big ass turbo. Smaller turbos with smaller intakes/rubber/silicone intakes sound higher pitch. This sound like either a large steel or aluminium pipe or nothing at all.
Disagree with me? Then tell me this. A BOV releases air in the intake system when the throttle is shut. Why would the air come out like pssh pssh pssh? The pressure isn't bouncing back and forward, it should just PSSSSH and the intake is empty from pressurised air.
@TheRoflgasms well some one told me a while back this car ran a g reddy bov, i dont know the model sorry. Its not a wastegate, that would be un-efficent with 1000hp.

@specializedspeed I have to agree but also question I have heard so many Greddy type r bov sound like this, even under full boost. When this car hits full boost the BOV just makes the single sound. Very interesting.
How they get that sound? I noticed that the skyline such as the supra make that sound, Its only possible in 6cyl twin turbo cars, the single turbo ones can make it too?, what is it...Ive heard that they don't use any BOV, so what the hell is it?

That's not any compressor surge or turbo sound x) Thats the sound of the air bouncing back towards the turbo impellers.. Mostly caused if you're running without any BOV but also if the BOV is wrongly setup.. I'm not sure if it's when it doesn't open fully or if it opened to quick.. But it's one of the 2 causes.. I have never heard a BOV sounding like that.. And in my ears theres no question about it.. N/A BOV or not opening BOV.. =) Cheers
@damonlandsdown That is NOT a ssqv.. Look at the clip I Linked you.. Completely different sounds.. That is a car without a BOV with the air bouncing back at the turbo..
@boostinRB25 Oh.. and by the way.. Even this guy that MAKES turbo's, BOV's and so on says that it's actually THIS sound that is the sound of a car WITHOUT a BOV... n00b
So fluttering is this little whining sound when u take foot of a gas pedal, turbo compressor oversurge? And with BOV u can eliminate that oversurge by letting the boost pressure of into an atmosphere.
@vaporazor naw its the same thinq with the supra thats just how the b.o.v is. like if u qot a t88 supra the b.o.v wud sound like flutter but its not thats just how it sounds
@roflex2 well thats true and not true. most turbo cars DID come with BOVs but they were recerculating not atmospeheric venting. And the one that did run without them ran perfectly fine because they ran low boost levels from the factory. Under 20 psi of boost a bov isn't necessarily required
@JamaicanBoy41 Yes most new cars do run them, however the older ones from <1990 mostly did not. F1 turbo race cars along with turbo rally cars all didn't run them either.
I'm gonna say its the wastegate, not compressor surge. Cause if thats bad for the car aka compressor surge , i'm sure the Prodrive P2 wouldnt make that same fluttering noise out of the factory
@Circa1990 theres no proof surge kills turbos. mine does it, and plenty of turbo cars never used bovs in the 80. a bov is to help keep the turbo on boost and spinning for better performance... turbo being killed is one of those internet rumours started by some noob who had nfi what they're talking about.
Its definitely compressor surge. External waste in no shape or form can make that sound as its via a spring and vacuum line to a certain pressure, at that pressure the wastegate opens, once that pressure drops the wastegate closes the spring will no open once again. The sound would not repeat if it was from the wastegate.
The sound you hear is the external wastegate if that is the arguement. I should know, I was after this sound on my GT4. I put SSQV amoungst a few BOV and made no difference. Soon as I put an aftermarket turbo with an external wastegate bang turkey gobble.
The sound is most definatley not a wastegate. Perhaps look up some videos of external wastegates, they open up as soon as it gets to a certain boost pressure and vent the excess, not when you lift off throttle. What you are hearing is good old surge.
@flyboi111 its not the gate doing it though. its because your turbo is bigger and chopping up air. an external gate will make the thing loud as fuck when under ACCELERATION and the gate opens (if you have a screamer pipe). can't believe the amount of noobs on the internet who have no idea what a BOV and gate actually DO...
they are using the HKS BOV and on high boost it creates that flutter sound that you hear. you will find most high boosting cars make that sound. it is not the wastegate, the wastegate is closed when off the gas or BOV is venting... i know i own a high boosted S13 Silvia i dont think anyone should give a comment unless they own a turbo car anyways and im not talking about just slaping on a turbo kit on some honda and saying you know it all. thats all im saying... dont bring a knife to a gun fight
konigk1ngs..fyi,the wastegate is located at the exhaust manifold,b4 the turbine,to regulate pressure of the turbo, and a BOV releases pressure once the throttle is closed, and is located before the throttlebody,if a turbo car doesn't have a BOV it will cause compressor surge, and the pressure from the turbo won't be released, thus resulting in turbo damage..that is either a BOV,but more likely to sound like a ported shroud...nutsack! eat shit and cry! lungfish!
Why would that be. What he said sounds perfectly normal. An external wastegate is usually integrated into the exhaust manifold, allowing exhaust flow to bi-pass the exhaust turbine on the turbo, preventing it from overspinning, and used to regulate boost pressures.
It isnt needed. A wastegate is to regulate turbo pressure, and a BOV or recirculating valve release pressurized air to prevent compressor surge (which damages the turbo). The difference between recirculating and BOV, is that a BOV vents the air into the atmosphere, while a recirculating puts it back in into the air box for example, and is usually a system found on engines with MAF's.
konigk1ngs..you're such a stupid fucking ahole!! hahaha!! i feel sorry for you, cause you think you know everything and actually know nothing! stop making comments like you know a lot about cars!! it's not a fuckin wastegate pinhead,it's a "BLOW OFF VALVE" dimwit! get a life or go back to pre school or something! eat some cheerios and cry to your mama!
a vehicle equipped with a turbo can still produce a compressor surge... its how you tune it and mods you give it that will create a better flow of air so the turbine does not spin the other way... having a recirculation tube on you BOV is really good but will quiet down the sound that everyone loves so much.... just a little info for ya
no hes right. the wastegate is whats making the flutter noise. screamer/divorced pipe is jst how the exerted pressure is released. and got its name screamer from its fully sick loud spool. not the flutter
if that's a blow off valve i'd love to know what it is. But it sound like stock recirc valves. Under a shit load of boost. That what r32 gtr recirculation valves sound like.
They are slots machined in the the compressor housing or turbo mouth. Some slots look like drill holes some look like bent long rectangles surrounding the wheel and inside of the turbo mouth.
Good question. Couldn't find specs about this one in particular (there is more than one Top Secret R34-GTR) but I think it's a Blitz. Not sure though.
The noise you are hearing is not compressor surge it is the bov valve/spring bouncing open close open close etc.. Happens when you have the bov valve/spring set to open at higher preasures.
the light chatter is the turbo slowing down too fast, the noise is the bov. it de-spools so quickly because the sequential tranny makes the engine slow down too fast
It's perfectly normal but it does wear out the turbo faster, thats where the BOV comes in... It highly reduces the amount of pressure needed to slow the rotating mass of the turbine. As for the motor a hard shifting sequential tranny is not good for any component of the car, the tranny itself, the driveshaft, flywheel, diff and so on all wear more quickly due to the harshness of the sharp shifting of the sequential tranny. On the other hand... I dont think they're worried about a budget.
bovs are mounted on the intake side of the turbo though. they're used to dump the excess boost pressure in the intake and prevent the excess pressure from stalling the turbo. not slow the turbine.
Half of you guys are complete idiots. You should really go read a book- Maximum Boost by Corky Bell. Then maybe you could post a decent response. The wastegate controls the amount of EXHAUST going through the turbo. It does this with an actuator controlled by boost on the compressor side of the turbo. Boost controllers really just "interrupt" this plumbing and control the actuator. BOV or blow off valves are strictly a pressure relief! running 15 pounds of boost then your BOV set 16-19 pounds.
There is a common myth in the automotive world about so called "wastegate chatter" or "turbo flutter", a noise created on lifting off the throttle in a turbocharged car. The sound is commonly described as a chipmunk or a rattlesnake and is often stated incorrectly as being a result of the turbo's wastegate closing.
The noise is in fact the air compressed by the turbo passing back through the compressor wheel of the turbo
then a bov comes into play so please SHUT THE FUCK UP AND STOP POSTING
the sound that gives of (sounds a bit like a dolphin having a good time) is called a wastgate, it goes with the turbo and releses the boost pressure when you lift of the throtle.
its not the wastegate you noob, its because it doesnt have a bov, so the air pressure hits the butterfly, and bounces back thru the piping out the turbo blades, thru the pod filters, and that is it.
its similar a blow off valve but you don't get the chatter, a wastegate is a bypass for the turbo exhaust, used to dump overboard, or waste, the excess exhaust which is beyond the engine's need for power so equalizes it rather the prssure father than dumping the lot like a dump valve/bov
its not a B.O.V coz it sounds different, go on the video "Subaru Impreza dump valve" and that is what a B.O.V sounds like, (no chatter noise) this is a wastegate on this video, get an education.
are you so thick skulled and ignorant, an actuator controls the boost allowed in not the wastegate. a wastegate contols the release of the boost, and a dnmp valve just releases all the pressure, theres a big difference.
Nah that is my mistake. This is the same Turbo that makes the rattlesnake noise. I guess during high compression levels it makes the funny squeaking sounds.

Yeah I think they need a better BOV sounds like a freaking horse.

W/e man, if you like your car sounding like a horse. I like clean crisp sounds like the HKS SSQV.

bovs are mounted on the intake side of the turbo though. they're used to dump the excess boost pressure in the intake and prevent the excess pressure from stalling the turbo. not slow the turbine.

The noise is in fact the air compressed by the turbo passing back through the compressor wheel of the turbo
then a bov comes into play so please SHUT THE FUCK UP AND STOP POSTING
hkballers 3 years ago
also the wastegate dumps excess boost not used thus that is why you have a dump tube on the bov fuck what are you like 14? or just a overgrown retard

If i could i would name my first born the sound from the b.o.v lmao

no shit....i know what it is

the sound that gives of (sounds a bit like a dolphin having a good time) is called a wastgate, it goes with the turbo and releses the boost pressure when you lift of the throtle.
caprimentle 3 years ago
its not the wastegate you noob, its because it doesnt have a bov, so the air pressure hits the butterfly, and bounces back thru the piping out the turbo blades, thru the pod filters, and that is it.
lordviper1989 3 years ago
its similar a blow off valve but you don't get the chatter, a wastegate is a bypass for the turbo exhaust, used to dump overboard, or waste, the excess exhaust which is beyond the engine's need for power so equalizes it rather the prssure father than dumping the lot like a dump valve/bov
caprimentle 3 years ago
Its called the BLOW OFF VALVE BOV
this one in this car is made by hks learn your stuff you car noob and boost noob
hkballers 3 years ago
its not a B.O.V coz it sounds different, go on the video "Subaru Impreza dump valve" and that is what a B.O.V sounds like, (no chatter noise) this is a wastegate on this video, get an education.
caprimentle 3 years ago
I am sorry but there are 3 fourms lauging at you a wastegate controls how much boost is allowed you fucking idiot
it is a hks bov i have the same one on both of my damn fucking cars stfu and stop talking like you know your shit
hkballers 3 years ago
are you so thick skulled and ignorant, an actuator controls the boost allowed in not the wastegate. a wastegate contols the release of the boost, and a dnmp valve just releases all the pressure, theres a big difference.

What BOV is that?
Richeousrita 4 years ago
Yeah it is funny. But, HKS has one that sounds almost exactly the same except it sounds more like a rattle snake. It's awesome.
falconmanf16 3 years ago
Nah that is my mistake. This is the same Turbo that makes the rattlesnake noise. I guess during high compression levels it makes the funny squeaking sounds.
