Hello so i will be picking up my BG 649 tomarrow and I bought 2000 grit sandpaper for the nicks after I done what will i need to use to get out the scrathes left by the sandpaper? P.S. I also bought mother's mag and aluminum polish along with oooo super fine steel wool.
I just purchased a pre-lock 649 today. the gun has some history it was once own by a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy. It is in excellent shape excempt it has a lot of nicks around the right side hammer shroud due to being dropped in the street. Question how did you remove the nicks around your pistol? PS thanks for posting this video
No pics yet I live In the People's Republic of California so I can't pick up the gun until November 14 Monday but I might be out of town in Vegas so I will be picking it up the following week November 21. I will post pic or send them to you so you can advise me on the best way to attempt to remove them. Once again thanks for the post and your advise.

@brandystoy I actually do not mind the locks. I have owned many Smiths with the lock and still own a few with one. I have a much bigger issue with all the laser etching on new guns. I would prefer they go back to actual engraving.
@TheChoada You have a Glock that jams? Maybe you should take advantage of your warranty (hell, I have a P08 Luger that I trust not to barf with the right kind of ammo.)
That being said, welcome to the S&W 649 club (mine's a .357 and I prefer it to my Glock as a carry piece also.;)
Its a beauty,,,you put some good hollow points like carbons in it and your loaded for bear.some people say they are for close range but hickoc45 has a vid shooten a snubbie at 80 yards :) I have a lot of guns but not one like your 38,wish I did :)
@maksini The Seecamp LWS380 I reviewed would be much easier to carry, but I would only do so if I did not have a way to conceal it otherwise. The m649 would be my choice is I was wearing adequate cover garments. The .38spl round it more powerful and the gun has sights.
@maksini After I repaired the nicks on the body of the gun I simply polished it with an old t-shirt and some Mother's Mag Polish. It is just a matter of repetitively rubbing on the polish then rubbing it off. Always using a clean section of the t-shirt.
@maksini I do not even remember, but it was in the $300 range I think. You just have to keep your eyes open and stop at gun shops as often as possible.
I have the same exact thing, model 649. It's not beautifully shined like yours but it sure is a great piece. It's a tough rugged little gun too, and it has plenty of stopping power especially with +p hollow tips.
You gotta love those pre-lock, no lock S&W's. I'm not a fan of nickel plated pimp guns, but this one is pretty nice. (I carry a 442 no lock myself) Good video.
Are you SURE you can fire .38 SPL +P in that pistol??!! You may want to check on that!!!

@Charles00773 Do not use real steel wool. use synthetic. Real steel wool can embed fibers in the stainless and cause surface rust.

Why do you guys have such a problem with the internal lock?
It's not as cool with the lock right?

This is what I carry, except mine has a black rubber hogue grip. And every time my Glock fails to feed at the range I am reminded of why I carry it.

I was wondering what you used to polish your pistol. Did you use Flitz or how did you get that beautiful finish on it? Thanks. Beautiful Smith
Albee4ty5 11 months ago
@Albee4ty5 I used Mother's Mag Polish and a cotton t-shirt. :-)

What's the difference between 649 and 649-1 models? If you had to pick one for carry gun would you choose S&W 649-1 or Seecamp .380?

Please tell how did you polish it up so nicely as many 649s' are used and show wear on them. What product did you use?

thought the 649 was only in .357 magnum

S&W redesignated the .38 bodyguard as a 638 but before that they were the 649. Now days 649 is a .357 but they are nothing like the sweet old 649's.

Pre-lock is the only way to go. I have a 640 pre-lock and it took forever to find one at a fair price, but its well worth it.
