I have Canon Optura XI DV cam and shoot with no tape and no SD card. Just firewire cable to MacBookPro into iChat or QuickTime or iMovie. Sound comes from camera mics but I'll be trying connecting to sound desk to take sound from stage mics when shooting my son's band Black River Drive.

I want a 2 in 1 digital HD video/camera that has at least 54 megapixels photo resolution, good zoom (more than 12X if possible), a built in flash and memory that can be expanded by a memory card, hopefully for less than $1000. Any suggestions?
I'm quite interested in making a purchase. You said you could get a discount on this camera. If possible, could you tell me what i have to do to retrieve this discount?
I was definitely debating between the Canon Vixia HV30 and the Canon HG20. The only thing that really turned me down from the HV30 (with the exception of the price) was the DV and the fact that it still uses the DV tapes (if I'm not mistaken). I had to go all digital and stick with the ACVHD, especially since it just flows with Final Cut (mac).
Not sure if you are a avid videographer or not, but the Hv30 is the better choice of the two. It uses HDV which is accepted natively by Final Cut Pro. AVCHD is coming along, but still lacks the amount of data that HDV outputs. Also when working with AVCHD and FCP, you need to convert it to Apples Codec which can be time consuming as well.
Yeah, I've seen the quality of the videos of the HV30 -- and I love them much. However, I prefer to avoid tapes. I honestly am not an avid videographer -- honestly, I just started getting into it, so I still have lots to learn. I used FCE4.0 - and I haven't had an issue with converting anything. I would definitely love to have an HV30, however I was able to get the HG20 for $600 - so I stuck with that.
do you think you could give me a coupon on a hv30?

nice, i got the vixia hv40... not much difference except progressive 24 fps recording.. runs tapes slower to get the actual 24fps video.

So you can't use a Camcorder as a webcam via USB on a Mac?
Cause I have the MacBook Pro late 2008 unibody and it doesn't have firewire :(

Hello Chris. Thank you for your videos!!!
Maybe you can help me on this question:
If I record in 25p and then render (?) with 1920x1080 resolution, is my movie 1080p?
Nobody could answer me this question...so I hope you know this :-)
Ciao!
PingaloBill 2 years ago
1920 x 1080 is 1080i!
OMG!
And use either 24 or 30!
21stCenGamer 2 years ago
Yes, it's 1080i. That's why I asked if it's 1080p. P!
PingaloBill 2 years ago
No you need to do a proper pulldown effect to get true native 24/25p with the hv30, the hv40 however has true native 24/25p!

Well, it is (was) a live stream, so the quality will decrease significantly, especial frame rate (which causes lag).
