I don't know the guy who makes these videos, but I know that he has an interracial background and that more than likely he was raised differently than I was, and I can respect that and talk about it openly.

You can be mixed race and very pale-skinned, and still identify with your black heritage, and - unfortunately - still suffer the same injustices as people who are "more black" than you. Race, like nationalism, is this push-pull between the positive of what groups we are included in, and the negative of those that we exclude or that exclude us.
Bi-Racial and Black are not mutually exclusive. Most Black people are mixed to some extent, and many people who have one Black parent and one that is non-white self identify as Black.. including myself.
So it's a mistake (alberit a common one) to assume that when someone like Obama or myself is called Black, that it's meant to disregard their mixed heritage. It is said with full awareness of -and pride in- the diverse diaspora we are a part of.

Bi-Racial and Black are not mutually exclusive. Most Black people are mixed to some extent, and many people who have one Black parent and one that is non-white self identify as Black.. including myself.
So it's a mistake (alberit a common one) to assume that when someone like Obama or myself is called Black, that it's meant to disregard their mixed heritage. It is said with full awareness of -and pride in- the diverse diaspora we are a part of.

I deff understand where you're coming from. My father is hatian and my mother is White. Just my personal prefrence isn't to be simply classfied as "black" or "white" I wasn't trying to downplay the fact that regardless we have a man of color in the oval office, because I am as estatic as the next person. I just know there are alot of people who do look at it as "he's a black man" and don't take into consideration that he's so much more then that, on so many other levels.

I just wanted to say thank you for posting this. You pretty much summarized things I've been trying to articulate for a very, very long time. There is a boat load of work to do in and on this country, and with a new President who seems like he's at least willing to *listen*, we have more of a chance to do this work than we did yesterday. And it is up to us as humans to roll up our sleeves and work to build something better for ourselves and our kids.
