If I had played this Genesis game back in the early '90s, I would have been in tears of pain from its flaws. If you want to play a much better Genesis racing game with good 3D graphics, play Sega's Virtua Racing.

Dude, this is the Genesis (or the Mega Drive in the UK where I am). 3D games like this were all the rage. It was the same for Stunt Race FX for the SNES. The controls sucked but it was 3D! Plus, Stunt Race had music and way better sound. Don't expect it to be a perfect game with perfect controls and perfect graphics. I grew up with games like this. Rubbish or good, I always played them. I was a Nintendo fan back then but I liked a few games on the Mega Drive.
This game isn't that bad. I used to be a lot harder on Genesis games when I was a kid (because of SNES envy) but I appreciate them a lot more now. I remember the frame rate being worse than this but seeing it again I'm impressed by how high it was. This game is doing 3D vector math with nothing but a ~8mhz 68000 crunching the numbers - no hardware accelerators or nothing - and it's actually putting on a pretty good show.

Up in your description it said the game was also made for the Sega Mega Drive, it's the same thing as the Genesis, when it was shipped to North America it was called the Genesis.

All you need to know is that the car hit's 0-60 in 4 secs, faster than the testarossa it was modeled after. Not to mention the testarossa SUCKS in the bendy stuff; and will catch fire spontaneously, so that part is authentic

Hard Drivin' is horribly dated and near unplayable at this point, but at the time, that game was amazing. It was revolutionary and the seminal racing/driving simulator. It's really unfair to review it today and basically ignore what the game stood for and had to offer to the industry when it came out.
@hexpinete The Genesis version really did suck though. I played both the arcade and PC versions and neither were half this bad. Granted they had more power, but you have to keep in mind that the Genesis had other racing games which were far superior to this. The controls were unbearably twitchy and the sounds paled in comparison to rival Genesis games of the time. This one really was pretty crap.
@hexpinete He spent ten minutes reviewing a Sega Genesis port of an arcade game, and only mentioned the arcade version briefly. Being based off an arcade game, it was rather short. The frame rate was by far the biggest weakpoint of the genesis port. Despite it's shortness and abysmal frame-rate, it was one of the mot realistic driving simulations at the time.
@hexpinete while it may of been revolutionary for it's time. That doesn't make it a great game, and doesn't make it any more fun. So i'll give it props for what it did, but that doesn't make it any better of a game.

You can play a much better (I imagine) port of the arcade version of Hard Drivin' in Midway Arcade Treasures 2. According to Wikipedia, the PS2 edition has some issues with this game and the XBox edition is the best overall.
Also, look up Hard Drivin' on Wikipedia and you'll discover just how revolutionary the orginal arcade game was. It was literally the first 3D polygonal racer and it came out in 1989-it was built on fully custom hardware so there's little wonder why it didn't translate very well to home consoles-it was simply too far ahead of its time. It came out during a time where polygonal graphics themselves were incredibly rare in games. Even blast processing couldn't handle this thing.
I'm pretty sure Hard Driven was originally an Arcade title and this is just a really crappy port for a machine that simply couldn't handle the graphics AT ALL. If they'd done this for the SNES using the FX Chip it probably would've been a different story. Believe it or not there are also versions for the Commodore 64 and Spectrum 128k. Just look at one of the related videos for the Arcade version and you'll see the graphics there are smooth like a knife through butter-and better looking too.

yep, it looks nice and fast for a sega genesis. i like the comentator in this movie. He talks like he is really driving in this game , and wind blows right on his face because of excessive speed man, its really realistic to drive in a world of hard drivin :]

Hard Drivin' is horribly dated and near unplayable at this point, but at the time, that game was amazing. It was revolutionary and the seminal racing/driving simulator. It's really unfair to review it today and basically ignore what the game stood for and had to offer to the industry when it came out.

This is my favorite racing game ever. I like it so much i give it a 10/10. Thumbs up or down if you agree/disagree
btw it has great sfx and music

There's a huge difference between YOU personally not liking the game and it ACTUALLY being a bad game.
If you want to have credibility and be respected as a reviewer, I'll advise that you learn the difference

@hexpinete The Genesis version really did suck though. I played both the arcade and PC versions and neither were half this bad. Granted they had more power, but you have to keep in mind that the Genesis had other racing games which were far superior to this. The controls were unbearably twitchy and the sounds paled in comparison to rival Genesis games of the time. This one really was pretty crap.

This is a genesis port of the first true driving simulator that ever was
the arcade version had an actual key to start the car along with clutch, acc and brake pedals, and a gear shift , wich for the time was revolutionary
they even have to figure out algorythms that did not exist to make the weight and speed affect your driving,
Seriously, it's like saying that gran turismo 5 sucks 30 years from now because it's not on 4Dfuturevision
It's awesome that you can play it on genesis, regardless

@hexpinete He spent ten minutes reviewing a Sega Genesis port of an arcade game, and only mentioned the arcade version briefly. Being based off an arcade game, it was rather short. The frame rate was by far the biggest weakpoint of the genesis port. Despite it's shortness and abysmal frame-rate, it was one of the mot realistic driving simulations at the time.

@hexpinete Spot on man, you cannot call a game worst , if it wasn't even designed to be played on that CPU,
it's like calling a M.A.M.E emulation of Tempest Tubes ( a vector graphics game ) worst PC game ever because it's not emulated properly,
i think this is '' excused '' because he just chose a game to go on a rant -AVGN Style- but without everything that makes the Nerd funny

@hexpinete I agree fully. I love the 1st verison in the arcades. Getting into the seat, and turning the key. Shift clutch clutch shift.. drive look out a truck! @__@ I bet, someone some where has one... i would buy it.. pay even $20K for one... Awesome game. ^__^ I 1st played it at a chucky cheese kid zone back in the 90's

You can play a much better (I imagine) port of the arcade version of Hard Drivin' in Midway Arcade Treasures 2. According to Wikipedia, the PS2 edition has some issues with this game and the XBox edition is the best overall.

Also, look up Hard Drivin' on Wikipedia and you'll discover just how revolutionary the orginal arcade game was. It was literally the first 3D polygonal racer and it came out in 1989-it was built on fully custom hardware so there's little wonder why it didn't translate very well to home consoles-it was simply too far ahead of its time. It came out during a time where polygonal graphics themselves were incredibly rare in games. Even blast processing couldn't handle this thing.

I'm pretty sure Hard Driven was originally an Arcade title and this is just a really crappy port for a machine that simply couldn't handle the graphics AT ALL. If they'd done this for the SNES using the FX Chip it probably would've been a different story. Believe it or not there are also versions for the Commodore 64 and Spectrum 128k. Just look at one of the related videos for the Arcade version and you'll see the graphics there are smooth like a knife through butter-and better looking too.
