The only issue is that you will have a little more NOx in the smoke and the smoke will be stingy to the eyes. In rest no problem for the engine if the oil do not have too many gums in composition.
Wow, I wonder what used oil would do to a late model direct injection electronic diesel engine. Did you notice an increase or decrease in overall power?
@gdogdieseldually We use used engine oil in hydraulic tanks, diesel tanks, and top off a low engine oil level back in the engine. Even a 12v cummins will enjoy a little or alot of engine oil in the fuel tank.
Those heavy duty tractors might be able to hold up fairly long with dirty used oil. However, there is a lot of gunk in waste motor oil, and using it uncleaned can easily foul your injectors on any road vehicle, and injectors are too costly to make it just. I am a strong supporter of using WMO as diesel fuel, and I do it every day after it has been cleaned by my centrifuge. Here you run 1 gallon of oil per 10 gallons of diesel (1:10). I run 1:1 or more very confidently. Check out my videos.
@USFiltermaxx I have been running WMO for 5 years in a diesel generator. I heat it to remove water, run it through a 2 microm centrifuge and treat it to bring the PH down to neutral. The fuel system for my generator is gravity feed and I still am using the original 10 micron fuel filter element.
@Pimptorious69 It's actually a very frugal and safe practice if you clean the oil with a good centrifuge first. I design, build and sell heavy-duty, large capacity centrifuges that remove the sub-micron particulates and non-oil liquids. Check out my videos and from there you'll see a link to my web site if your interested. I have performed thousands of hours of testing and I run the oil 1:1 or more with diesel. I even have a book all about it and other books about other practical topics.
My pickup truck diesel engines are a 93 Cummins 5.9 12 Valve 6BT and an 88 Navistar International 7.3 IDI V8. I would only run used engine oil or waste vegetable oil in them if I had an extremely good filtration system. I would probably want a 2-stage filtration system, not on the truck but in the garage etc, with an extremely fine 2nd filter. It's just my preference that I would not want even the smallest metal or food particles running through my Injection Pump or Injectors.
Mineral oil is not flamable, don't do that.If you do that it gives lubrication and you can run the engine without oil, try if you don't belive me.But it doesen't give you power and the smoke is dirty
@TheConradChannel yes, i know, i used from mechanics from my street. It had a smelly white smoke and underpower.Obvious some chemicals dont let it burn proper. In fact i suspect i was burning soap and antifreeze but even if you use your own waste oil, it would be best to give to a specialised recycler and they make it proper fuel.
Running engine oil will nor hurt the injectors, pump, fuel system... etc what i recommend doing is running two filter bases (one matching the filter of one of your daily driven vehicles, and the second one using a micron filter) That way you can just take the filter off your car and put it straight over onto your diesel. The car filter will pick out the bigger things, and the micron will pick out the smaller things. It's about 40 bucks to do all this.. Napa sells the filter bases.
Out of just asking would an older 6.9 or 7.3 ford diesel benifet from this or would the marine 2 cycle additive be better? I know this works on the older diesel engines and have seen it done after filtering it a couple of tiems but just what are your thoughts on it? Aiming to by one before 1996 latest is going to be 2000.
just take some filters and pour used oil through it and pour the filtered oil in your tank and bam, 1 or 2 gallons of diesel fuel you dont have to buy to fill your tank just inspect it to make sure its thin enough and free of sludge
@FUCKINROCKIT how many hrs does it have we dont push ours more than 15,000 and do a rebuild. Cost is less if we do it in the shop on down days then in the field needing it. We use it other whys we have to pay to get rid of it.
@FUCKINROCKIT you had that i assume so i assumed sorry we use all the oil hyd, tranny and engine in our D9 the gear oil from the finals goes in the track barrel no since in putting new oil in them dam thing is still going with 60,000 hrs only done the motor 4 times
@FUCKINROCKIT no it helps the fuel system some higher end genaraters change there own oil cat, cummins and john deere and the old oil goes into the fuel tank but a lot of old timers still do this there is a lot of moving parts in a diesel fuel system and the oil helps lube it and it is free fuel that engine holds about seven gallons and thats seven gallons of fuel you don't have to buy
I have a 1982 VW Rabbit Diesel (1.6L), been running it on 30% Waste engine oil since 2002. I do filter it with a 10 micron filter before I dump it in my tank. Doesnt hurt the fuel system at all since it is diluted with Diesel. I have ran Veggie oil from the grocery store with it and also Kerosene. My buddies in Germany all run their diesel cars on 30% waste...even the newer cars built 2000 and up.
There have been companies that've made blending units to filter and mix used engine oil to diesel fuel. The catch is, you wouldn't want to do this on a piece of equipment that sits alot. Used engine oil supports bacteria, which can form algea inside a fuel tank. Once that happens, you can look forward to one big headache and lots and lots of fuel filters
you could run just about anything in those old diesels, but i would'nt advise it on these knewer ones, with all the emission stuff they are putting on them now.
I'd still be very weary of doing that. Lots of crud is in the used oil. Lots of microscopic particles of metal and sludge going through your fuel system. Maybe a little bit wouldn't hurt.
@DieselPowerTV I agree. I burn my used motor oil in my B model cat every oil change. Still runs great, pulls like a dream. Never had any issues what so ever.
@matts4290 I agree with Matt on this one. It won't be as dangerous on this old tractor but on newer engines it can lead to deadly results for the engine. First the viscosity is extremely high, then there's all the unknown materials in the oil which is caused by blow by from the engine that used the oil, there'll also be carbon and ash in the oil. These may not harm an older fuel system design but it has the potential to doing some serious damage on newer diesels, especially common rails.
@IBLEWUP1 I've tried it in my old mechanical cummins. It slows it down a bunch and seems to have less power. I put in a few quarts to 20 or 30 gallons and I still noticed the difference negatively.
@matts4290 --That's odd, it must be the way the fuel delivery system is designed on your cummins. On my 03 7.3 PSD the fuel filter has a heater in it and then after that it's routed through the heads internaly which heats the fuel up quite a bit (100*+) before the fuel even reaches the injectors. Have you tried 2-Stroke oil? Add 1 quart of 2-stroke oil next time you fill up and you should notice a positive gain in mileage and power.
@IBLEWUP1 A bit of 2 stroke oil in an old ford transit mk3 or early mk4 (european ford van came out in 86ish went to mid 90s then got slightly more modern engine) with the 2.5 Di engine or some of the smaller fords from the same period with the 1.8 diesel seems to help a bit. Old VW diesels from the mid 90s back that i run seem to really like vegetable oil with a little 2 stroke oil added and maybe 5L regular diesel to a tank. In winter a small bit of gasoline lets them run better cold.
@tfraud I don't think it would because the oil is slightly thicker than diesel and because of that the injector pump would be lubricated even better. The fuel filter will pick up any metal partials from the clean used oil saving the injectors from malfunctioning.
@DieselPowerTV I paritially fill my fuel filter on my 01 Duramax with new transmission fluid when I change the filter. I did this also on an 86 Ford 6.9 and you can't tell the differance in the way it runs or sounds.
Another trick with ATF in cold weather (like 20* to 40* below 0), if your fuel gels on you, get the used filter off as fast as possible and get a new filter filled with ATF back on before the engine has a chance to get too cold to start.

@pvcarmon1 you just need to filter the oil and you can use it in composition with other diesel fuel.
In Europe, biodiesel (vegetable oil) it is already in mandatory use in combination with regular diesel.

isn't engine oil heavier than diesel and sink to the bottom?
