By the way when u mentioning expansion 4 Atari Laser Disc & Dragon Lair, Space Ace etc. There was a system at that time that incorporated such features. It was called Halcyon.
This is my favorite system ever believe it or not. My parents bought me this when i wanted NES because it would play our old Atari 2600 games. I am in process to collecting the other 55 or so i don't have. But what a pain. Every retro game store i go to has none or the ones i have. Looking forward to going to Digital Press to fill in same gaps! Love the videos keep them coming.
You are absolutely right! The 7800 was "old and crusty" when it came out, focusing heavily on those old arcade games.. BUT, like you said, it does give it a certain charm today, over 25 years later. Many of those arcade ports are still some of the best versions, ironically, so it's great revisiting them. And the fact that it's cheap doesn't hurt, either! ;)
I thought I was the only one that is down enough to wear a t-shirt and shorts on a snowy day :D. Anyways, I recently heard your channel from the All Gen Gamers podcast teaser video. Watched your video and subscribed to your channel :D.
Metal, firstly, great videos, you rock! Secondly, can you clarify why the 1983 "crash" is remembered as being so huge and damaging? I'm in the UK, I'm 32, and I was 5 yrs old in 1983; here in the uk, there was no "crash"; micro computers were in the majority, not consoles; I only knew about the 5200, 7800, colecovision and vectrex in the last 12 years, we had the sinclair zx81, spectrum, acorn atom, bbc b, the commore PET, vic 20 an c16/c64, and these continued non-stop throughout the 80's.
@steveelmy - The Video Game Crash of 1983 primarily occurred in North America. Basically low quality games, and over saturation caused most retail stores to stop carrying games and consoles. And it appeared to happen over night. Several big game developers went bankrupt and closed and it looked like the video game "fad" was over. Thankfully, home computers and eventually Nintendo & Sega kept it alive!
I think its funny one of your older vids. I think its the one with the eco cage. playstion sent you a controller and you called it a joy stick. You can tell your a old time gamer. Lol but I grew up on the nintendo nes. So I call it a controler but its cool one of my friends used to keep calling them paddles. Bad name for it if ya think about it
If you need a way to record things like the 7800, you can connect the system through the RF into the cable input on a VCR and then use RCA cables through the output to record it.
great vid as usual man, i played 7800 centipede not that long ago for one of my vids i reckon its the closest to the arcade version you'll get, when atari do it right, thay do it right.
I bought an Atari 7800 a little over 3 years ago. Mine must've been made after the expansions were cancelled because the expansion port I saw on yours isn't there. The only actual 7800 games I've been able to find so far are Dig Dug, Pole Position 2, Donkey Kong Jr. and Ms. Pac-Man.
awesome review, I own a 7800 and i enjoy playing it. Although I would love to get my hands on the 7800 controllers they released in europe which looks like a nes controller
GREAT video! And, like you said-stick to retro game stores and pawn shops. Because you'd be shocked at what people on Ebay will charge for some of the rarer 7800 games-at least 60 bucks!! There was a 7800 Joypad released by Atari in Europe only, so look for that. Finally, check out the site Atari Age. Youtube won't let me hyperlink, but there are even homebrew games on that site that you can buy!
It really is a great system to collect for, although lacking in sound the gameplay & visuals on the arcade ports are some of the best versions on any system.
The RF out is an issue, but they can be modded to produce a composite output (the NTSC model easier than the PAL one). The titles pretty much do not work across regions though, & are not clearly labelled, so you need to make sure any titles you find are for your region.
Darn you Jesus! I've contemplated buying one before but now you influence me all the more! I just need to know one thing... did the cartridges have region lock outs? As it looks as though I'd have to import most games from what I'm observing in an eBay search.
We had a 7800 when it came out and I don't think I ever spent but a handful of hours with it. Wasn't long after that the NES landed during Xmas. I think I ended up taking it apart like I did with the 2600. I was fascinated with trying to build a laser. LOL. Don't ask me why I thought I could build a laser out of 2600 and 7800 parts. Between the ages of 9-13 I was taking everything apart to see how they worked. I managed to refrain from tearing the NES apart though. Of course it was fantastic!
@DublinSeafoodInc - Honestly, I prefer playing the 2600 games, because there are probably 25 original games that are absolute classics! However, many of the arcade conversions on the 7800 are pretty damn good, like Ms. Pac-Man, Food Fight, Dig Dug, Centipede, Joust & Galaga.
The 7800 was my first console. I use to have about 150-200 games for it(between the 2600 and 7800). My Dad got alot of them from people he worked with. After a while my parents ended up selling a bunch of them. I guess they though it was to many.
I subscribed to you quite a while ago when you were at a couple hundred subscribers.. I've just noticed that you're at more than 5000! That's awesome man, congratulations! Keep up the good work, you deserve many more subscribers and they will come as long as you keep doing what you do and have fun doing it.
Proud owner of the 7800 over here. It's truly in my top 5 favorite consoles. I must admit, I actually like the controller idea yet it did take some time getting used to it. I think they design it like that for both left-handed and right-handed gamers... I could be wrong.
One thing I've noticed about your videos, is the the great background music. Do you record it yourself? I really like it! Great review of this console. I loved the intro & outro clips as well :)
@TreyMasaki - All the background music is written and performed by me and my band. I released two songs for free on my personal web site. Check it out! MetalJesus (dot) com.
I remember a friend of mine had one of these and I just remember the crisp, clear, almost perfect video game like graphics. I wanted one so bad but then was given a Commodore 64 and I had such a wonderful time with that. I remember playing The Bard's Tale IV on it as much as I play wow on my computer now a days. It nearly floored me when you said '87 and you being in high school. I graduated in '79. For some reason I just thought we were more of the same age. lol
I was a 2600 owner. My favourite game for the 2600 being FROSTBITE. Such an awesome simple game, kinda like Frogger. I was amazing at it. Whenever you got a "high score" a fish icon would appear under your score. I remember getting HUGE scores and submitted them to Activison, but they never replied lol
For all of you out there that may be considering buying one of these, make sure that you get the power supply with it. The power supply is proprietary and it has a unique connection, so getting something of the same voltage won't do. Spare power supplys online are overpriced for this reason. Just do yourself a favor and get everything you need all at once.
I think that I will be picking one up soon. There is a guy at my local flea market that is selling one with controllers and about 30 games for $80. I am going to see if he can go down on the price a little bit. I was too young to really know much about this system. I was born in 1984. By the time I was old enough to get into games I overlooked this in favour of the NES. I remember playing with one at a friends house but favoured the NES for its better graphics.
I think pre-Nes controllers work good if you have 3 or 4 hands. ^_^ LD expansion, now that would make the 7800 huge lol. Jack Tramiel I hate you and everything you did to Atari, last nail in the coffin. I've typed this before but what were they thinking downgrading sound hardware with their latest console. Very poor RF, mod maybe? Cart size killed RPG grade text archives on the 7800. :( At the time the same arcade titles for 2600 to 5200 to 7800, how about something original Atari? Sweet review.
Lol, I have the tendency to wander out in shorts and a t-shirt whenever it snowed in Seattle as well XD it annoyed my mom greatly but my dad does it as well.
Atari7800. Great, but commonly almost unknown console. Especially in Europe (we've got a really bad PAL version here). A really fantastic piece of hardware. IMHO it's their second best console ever.
Have you heard about the new XM addon for the 7800? Atari age is working on an addon module for the 7800 that features more ram, a pokey chip, and a YM 2151 sound chip.
Awesome man! i never did really get into the atari craze at all! but the 7800 actually looks appealing to the eye and doesn't look as much as a burden on the collection like old wooden 2600! all though i am sure that one would be fine to but just really big! i like the sleek design of the 7800 and might pick one up if i have a chance! Good Video MetalJesus! were getting a decent amount of snow as well! right above Seattle
I like my 7800. I was lucky enough to find Xenophobe and Impossible Mission last weekend. Both are interesting.
One of my prized possessions in my Burgertime Homebrew (Beef Drop). And you gotta love 2 player simultaneous Centipede. That could be a good video for you and Drunken Master Paul to do. If you get a chance go to my channel and check out my 7800 2 player centipede video as well as a game of Maze Craze me and my friend did. Fun stuff.
@IntellivisionDude - The funny thing about Impossible Mission on the 7800 is... that's it's truly IMPOSSIBLE! The US version shipped with a bug that won't let you finish the game. Classic!
@IzLoveMoneyz - I'm a big fan of Going Commando & Up Your Arsenal on the PS2. I just think those two games were near perfection! The PS3 games are decent, but more of the same...so I couldn't really get into them.

I was upset when my dad threw away our 2600 in the 90s. Maybe I should get a 7800 since this thing is backwards compatible.
