What distinguishes Jones from the other individuals I assume you're referring to is that Jones was a Czar. His appointment was not subject to confirmation by the Senate and since it's not an elected position, there was no scrutiny by voters. Yet his position afforded him significant power and control over the affairs of the US Energy Dept. Sorry, no deal.

In addition to being morally repugnant, infidelity subjects government officials in sensitive positions to potential blackmail (as we have recently seen on the Republican side). But I disagree that Jones's resignation is no big deal. It's very important because it's brought attention to the issue of whether the appointment of czars is constitutional and/or should be discontinued for good.

You're right. He's not the first President to have czars. I think the clear solution is to have them be subject to the confirmation process in the Senate. They end up with comparable authority to a cabinet member, so they should have to go through the same vetting and approval process. That's the only way to ensure that the executive is not getting "acceptable" cabinet members approved by the Senate and then delegating their authority to some whackjob shadow cabinet.
