  • This movie and book, touched me greatly! I felt it when he found his meaning of life "Happiness is only real when shared" I felt it when he poisoned himself accidentally. I just wish I could be like him and to live uncommitted and to live deliberately!

  • Emile reminds me of Leo DiCaprio.

  • @fishNguitars Sean Pean actually envisioned Dicaprio as Chris when he first wanted to do it in 1997.

  • Emile is so cool.

  • he really reminds me of Leonardo Dicaprio

  • @Djlynx23 Exactly what i thought!

  • @Djlynx23 Me too. I cant stop imagining a dark haired Leo!

  • this interviewer is an idiot..."what...what...sort of...what...kind of...a lot of, sort of..."fucko...

  • In my opinion it's not itchy feet. It's that you want to live what you feel, you want to live what you believe in and you stand by, represent and actually do what you say, feel or belive.

He choose to do it in Alaska but everyone can do it not by going into the wild but in the everyday life.

Maybe that's just me, but I think that was his message.

  • the scene at 0:44 to 0:56 is absolutely beautiful

  • you, alexmigda,

he didnt survive, yes, but he didin't fail. He wanted pure liberty and he got it . But your liberty stops where someone or something else's starts. and nature took control over him . we can't go over nature's liberty thats why he died.

  • he wanted to eat, he was hungry, it wasn't a choice, he was so hungry that he had to eat those plants, he was praying for animals to come cuz he was starving!

  • Great movie. One question though. At the beginning and end of the movie Chris' dad lifts his pants up, showing his legs? What does this mean?

  • i think he's just holding himself up while he sits...but that's just my interpretation.

  • He wasn't wearing socks (like Chris used to).

  • If it wasn't for a small mistake McCandles would not have died when he did. He lasted four months on his own in the Alaskan wilderness, that's three months and 29 days more than most of us would.

    Long live Chris McCandles<3

  • Not eating is a pretty big mistake

  • @alexmigda he didnt just starve. he died due to the mold that was in the plants he ate, causing indegestion. even professional plant people wouldve had a hard time finding this

  • Where's the evidence? Krakaur's imagination doesn't count. The evidence of Chris's food diary demonstrates that he wasn't eating enough and the only likely cause of death was starvation.

  • You're right, they would have a hard time finding it. In fact, nobody did.

  • @alexmigda Do you really think that not eating was a choice made by McCandless? I think surviving as long as he did out there with as little as he had is pretty amazing. It's not like there was food all around and he chose not to eat. He probably spent most of his time and energy foraging and hunting, fighting to provide even a little bit of food.

  • it absolutely was a choice

  • You are the one without evidence. He CHOSE to go out there, he CHOSE not to bring enough food, and he CHOSE not to leave as he slowly starved to death. Nobody forced him to do it. It was a choice. It's a pretty simple concept. Show me some evidence that he was forced to go out and starve himself to death in Bumfuck Alaska.

  • @alexmigda Evidence he tried to eat: the pictures of him with the porcupine and other animals he hunted, the journal entries about eating berries and trying to eat the moose. The argument is not about his choice to go to Alaska, or the choices he made about what to bring with him. It was about whether he chose to eat or not. Also, he did try to leave, and COULDN'T because of the river.

  • He may have eaten all that was available in that area, but he could have walked out. He chose to be there and do that. He had a road map, and there was a road that he could get to without crossing the river. He knew this. He wasn't very far from civilization. Big surprise...

the Hollywood film was not entirely accurate.

  • He didn't want to die, but he died because of his own actions and not by some freak accident. That was the story that Hollywood and Jon Krakauer didn't want to tell.

  • You retard, what is he anorexic now? Did he "not want" to eat because he was self conscious about his weight? (Yes, i'm being sarcastic) It's not like food was put in front of him and he refused! And why would he take a lot of food with him when he wanted to live off the land?!

  • My point is that he failed. He wasn't some great survivor. He just didn't realize that he was slowly starving until the point where he was too weak to do anything about it. The river was not what prevented him from reaching civilization. He could have done that in just a day or two of walking. He's also the prime suspect in the vandalism of some cabins in that area.

  • The river was too dangerous to cross, and he didnt have a map to pinpoint where he could cross (the point was to walk into the wild). He provided food for months during the most difficult seasons. It was mould on the seeds he ate that poisoned him.

  • He had a road map. There was a road that he could have gotten to without crossing the river.

There is no real evidence that he was poisoned. The story of the mould was made up by Krakauer when people pointed out that lab tests refuted his original claim about a poisonous plant. There is also no evidence of the mould that Krakauer speaks of ever being in that area or growing on that species of plant. I thought I had made this clear.

  • how do you know this??? u just want to make sure its true lol.

  • Alright chikadee, poisoned or not poisoned, dead or alive- I respect and admire this man... and the fact that he wasnt around to tell his tale shouldnt diminish what he achieved. I just think the word failure could be revised. "How high can you fly before the sun melts the wax in your wings" ?

  • The poison interferes with your metabolism and its extremely difficult to keep on weight after they have been consumed- especially if you are as thin as he was. Before he was poisoned he was perfectly fit- I think after two years of going hungry he'd know if he was starving. I dont think he failed, he inspired me and perhaps many more. His last words written were " I have had a happy life and thank the lord. Goodbye and may god bless all. "

  • @honeypulse He also wrote (according to the movie) "Happiness only real when shared". Which I read as he was unhappy while he was out there, since he was alone.

  • @theer1ca I see your point, but to feel a connection with other people is just human. Sure, what he did was amazing, but does anybody want to die all alone and not have shared there happiness with someone?

  • My point is that he didn't realize he was slowly starving until he was too weak to do anything about it. If he did realize it, then he chose to die. If he didn't realize it, then he's just an idiot. He wasn't some great survivor. The river was not what was keeping him from civilization. It would have only taken him a day or two to walk out. He was also the prime suspect in the vandalism of some cabins in the area.

  • if you need a movie of great survivors, choose, I dont know, maybe tarzan, indiana jones, resident evil or smth. I think the point of this movie was not the quality or consistency of the adventures, but the philosophy and uniqueness of the character, in this place - the real person.

  • Why don't you go to Alaska... Reply to this comment if you survive.

  • If I do ever go to Alaska I'll be sure to eat enough food to survive.

  • The lab tests showed that the seeds themselves were not poisonous. The author of "into the wild' does not dispute this. His claim is that McCandless kept the seeds in a bag which became moldy with a type of mold that can inhibit the absorption of nutrients.

  • with no evidence

  • To follow a film this great with speedracer... He's clearly not a snob.

  • i did not understand what vince vaugn's charecter did wrong, in relation to the law, why he was put in prison? some reference to little black boxes. tax evasion?

  • He was making boxes that steal tv from satellites. Read the Book Into The Wild, its waaayyy better haha

  • havent read the book in awhile but im sure the little black boxes were something to do with being able to watch TV for free without havent to pay tax, not sure though...

  • Great movie I can appreciate and have a lot of respect for. At the same time though I don't go to the movies to be sad..

  • Agreed Swordfish356.. He did a damn good job, and if he got poisoned, he made one mistake. Think of how many an average dude would make within those four months in Alaska. Or the other one and a half year he was road-tripping..

    One mistake...

  • in the movie i saw two. the other one is passing a river in summer not thinking about how it would look in winter.

  • Well Alexmidga i don't agree. He did after all survive for 4 months or so in the wild on hes own with out much or any experience. And after all no one actually knows, Weather he died from starvation or Poisoning.

  • well... he had a lot of experience. did u read the book?

    this wasnt his first "adventure"

it was a tragedy because alaska is sooo sparce. they say many have died doing this specifically in alaska. i dont know, i read the book haha and they say the autopsy showed he died of starvation. where did u get ur info from? read the book. its a great book.

  • if you read the book you would know that he didn't JUST starve to death.

he was poisoned by mold on seeds that he ate which caused him to starve no matter how much food he ate.

so yes, he did have the skills.

how many of us can survive in the bush on our own for four months?

  • You shouldn't believe everything you read. Krakauer pulled that out of his ass. Lab tests didn't actually show that any of those plants were poisonous. The actual evidence shows that he slowly starved to death over the entire 4 month period.

    :)

  • Comment removed

  • That wasn't confirmed though, the author just said that is one way he could have died as he had a journal entry about bad seeds. Autopsy said he dided of starvation

  • Great songs, by Eddie Vedder.

  • I have new respect for Sean Penn and even greater respect for Emil Hirsch after seeing this movie. I first saw Emil in Lords of Dogtown. Great performance Great movie and a great Jon Krakauer book. I hope Emil does more movies like "Into the Wild' and please no more Speed Racer. It is just such an exreme waste of talent.

  • I agree. Speed Racer is ridiculous!

  • this movie totally touched me

    i really mean it

  • Where did it touch you?

    *Brings out barbie doll*

  • LOL touche

    mmmmm

"the bad part was that it never called me back"

  • i refused to watch this movie for so long cuz i didnt want anyone to ruin it for me or twisted in someway but the people who acted in this film were very much how they suposed to be in the book and this guy right here really did justice to chris's character and did a good job

  • he played the true story alpha dog..

im not surprised at all, emile is an awesome guy.

  • Both men are amazing, him and mccandless

  • I know they meant for this film to be an uplifting, follow your dream movie. BUT, for me this movie was very depressing & sad. I had a hard time watching the whole thing & I didn't get any feel good vibes from it at all.

I thought the acting was great, though. Emile Hirsch & Kristen Stewart did an awesome acting job. Jenna Malone did an awesome acting job too plus she did the best narrating of a movie than anyone I've heard. Her voice had all & every emotion done so well. Lots of depth!

  • Put more padding up in the room - too much reverb!

Think before you ask each question!

Basic things this guy doesn't know =/

    Great movie though.

  • emile really wants to get out of that interview hes being put off by the interviewers nervs

  • weak interviewer

  • lol. i counted 13 "sort of" :D

  • this interviewer sort of needs to think before he speaks

  • interviewee also

  • true; but he's a great actor, nevertheless>)

great movie; great music; great scenery.

    plz do watch it

  • I sort of liked this interview

  • this is the worst interviewer ever. he sort of needs to find another occupation.

  • i completly agree..

  • he played this role amazingly

  • I don't think the questions were bad at all. I just think some actors are very uncomfortable answering any questions for an interview.

  • I agree

  • hahahah i sort of told you that the sort of interviewer says "sort of" like sort of a lot...

But I agree- love the soundtrack, love the movie, love the book. Because of Into the Wild, I've become a major Jon Krakauer fan. His writing is unique in that it focuses on the story moreso than the style in which it's told. In other words- we get his subject, rather than a bunch of literary tricks

  • sort of... =)

  • this is sort of a good interview, but sort of annoying when he always says sort of

  • sort of a lot of sort of's

  • Love the book and the movie. Im totaly moved by the Mccandless story.

  • me too!!!

  • @DarkHypocrisy me too!

  • I COUNTED 10 SORT OF'S!

  • LOL thats funny and true,

  • The best about into the wild was Eddie Vedder...

  • regress to progress

  • fuking love this movie best ever\

  • this is my fav movie. chris inspires me,

  • that movie made me cry when he died and when he was crying and when he got beat up . :( , but now i dont cry because hes not the real chris mccandless .

  • who the HELL interviewed this segment? if i hear the phrase "sort of" one more time... what an injustice...

  • i going to wild me too

  • i LOVED that movie...i mean, i spent alot of it drooling over emile lol, but seriously it was beautifully made :)

  • i think it was good

  • Into the Wild is an unelievably beautiful movie and if you havent read the Jon Krakauer book you really should because it's amazing and so sad I cried the whole way through! But I cry in everything.

  • he did a great job in the movie.

    It's one of my faves

  • Best Movie Into The Wild!GREAT!!

  • bu filmi asla unutmayacagim

I LOVE THIS MOVIE ITS SO GOOD

  • Best movie ever.

Worst interviewer ever; who is the guy asking these terrible questions? Get a new job.

  • haha, i agree! horrible, horrible interviewer

  • i agree! horrible interviewer

  • I HATE when the stupid interviewers ramble on with their questions, don't let the actors get a word in.

  • right on. this interviewer was the worst. maybe it was an intern. he slipped in "sort of" as much as possible. ugh. i'm tempted to start a tally.

  • I LOVE THIS MOVIE ITS SO GOOD>

  • "Happiness is only real if shared."

    My favorite movie.

    The End.

  • I think that Chris was sort've trying to escape his rocky relatioships with people in a way, trying to come to terms with it and he found solace in nature. The old man he met found happiness only in people and chris sort've was only able to find happiness mostly in nature.I think the lesson's suppose to be that happiness is all around us,found in all people and things

  • I agree, but it was also do what you want to do with your life - follow your dreams and share them with others - that is what truely brings happiness

  • Don't you guys understand? It's not supposed to make you feel happy! You're not supposed to love it! Don't you understand that throughout the film Christopher held the belief that man was meant to be alone, out in the wild. He was meant to convince you of that truth. Once he did, he got sick and died, only after coming to a realization and leaving the final note "Happiness only real when shared," which overthrew his entire philosophy on life. It's not supposed to make you happy!

  • It made me sad in the best way. Does that make sense?

  • well considering he never wrote happiness is only real when shared that was just added in the movie i dont really think that depicts the real christopher.

  • Actually, the real Chris actually did write that, it's in the book by Jon Krakauer.

  • this movie really inspired me to think beyond everything

  • I have one piece of advice for anybody who wants to try to rough it in Alaska: GET WITH A NATIVE ALASKAN or somebody who has been around that area and is an experienced outdoorsman/ outdoorswoman.

  • why you say that?

  • so you don't eat something that is going to cause you to starve

  • Because a native might have a bit of knowledge about the area and the experience to save your hide. If McCandless simply knew there was a crossing over the raging river a few miles away he would have survived.

  • I am in love with that movie.

  • o my god, he is so freakin hot! this is my favoretist movie i wached it last night

  • "Happiness only real when shared - brilliant words

Very important, personal and Awesome movie!

  • je crois que je suis amoureuse de cet acteur...

  • Such an awesome, inspirational, and sad movie. I loved it!

  • will you guys quit talking bad about him sometimes ppls composure breaks and the river cas completely unexpected and he panicked it can happen to anyone in a certain situaton he lived how he anted and had the courage to follow his dreams that takes courage

  • From Wikipedia:

Alaskan Park Ranger Peter Christian wrote: First off, he spent very little time learning how to actually live in the wild. He arrived at the Stampede Trail without even a map of the area. If he [had] had a good map he could have walked out of his predicament [...] Essentially, Chris McCandless committed suicide."[16] Some may argue that this is what he wanted all along, given his troubled past.

  • i buy that. he coulda got out easy if that's what he wanted

  • How could Hirsch say that Chris Mccandless had the skills needed to survive?! He clearly had very limited survival skills, that's what got him killed FFS!

  • you truly are a fucking idiot

  • "fuck me he had a stove and a mattress and a massive bag of rice. he was sheltered from the elements and still managed to starve to death" - sm

LOL!!! Dude woulda starved at a Mickey D`s for all we know...

  • good actor

  • oh my good (!) emile hirsch so cute .. emile hirsch with short hair ..with long hair...

watch the movie and stop discussing his hair or something like that...

    hell ya

  • exactly man. lets hitchhike across america. wow nobody has ever done that! fuck me whats wild about living in a bus

  • how about having to hunt all the food you're gonna eat for 112 days?

  • I think this story is so popular because Emile Hirsch is an amazing actor and very attractive he played the role so well

  • hes dating a danish girl named Lucila Valdivia atm.. he met her while he was shooting speedracer in berlin, while she was on vacation there..

  • I love Emile Hirsch with short hair. ^^ I think he looks better with his Speed hair than with his long hair...He's awesome. =)

    I love Speed Racer!!!

  • EMILE HIRSCH IS SO CUTE OMG,he talks like a little kid and his face too. its so happy

  • Okay Emile Hirsch is super awesome, but who the hell is this interviewer? He sucks! Yak yak yak, spit it the fuck out!

  • OKay GUYS!! If he didn't eat those berries, he wouldn't died in the show.

  • chris was amazing...into the wild was amazing...Emile hirsh is amazing!! lol

  • Christopher McCandless went into the wild with a to less knowledge and experience about hunting I think.

  • he was plannig it for a long time and he wouldve made it if he could of crossed the river or if he didnt eat those berries he wouldve made it.

  • Emile could cry on cue!!! AWESOME!

  • anyone else think emile looks and sounds quite similar to jack black?

  • Uh NO!!!!!!!!!!

  • well then your blind and deaf thats your problem not mine so chill out.

  • Other than the fact that they both have a penis....no....

  • lol there was a commercial for that speed racer movie and i was like omgsh Emile Hirsch! and my dad was like i thought that was Jack Black hahaha

  • Jack Black couldn't fit into the Mach 6 unless you craned him in...

  • It's the Mach 5.

  • i love love love this movie! it's very moving and inspiring in a sense. they did a great job!

  • there is a pleasure in the pathless woods..there is a rapture on the lonely shore..there is society..where none intrudes..by the deep sea and music in its roar...i love not man the less..but nature more...

  • No pity there, huh?

  • "He had the mental stamina." You've gotta admit he had some drive. Some serious determination, and it takes guts to do what he did.

  • I actually agree with that, it was pretty stupid what he did. But we all know that. It's more about what he did during his short life that we should be considering. That is practically why I respect him. His Views on life itself

  • maybe you should read the book and find out what happened before you say anything ignorant

  • He is wonderful in this part...great movie!

  • great interpretation by Emile in this movie...congratulations!

  • The fungus thing is the author of the book's idea. Like i said no one really knows, many scenarios are possible.

  • I read that he ate some seeds that were edible but that had a type of fungus on them that prevented the digestion of food and that's how he starved.

  • No one knows for sure what happened. But i don't think he starved just because. i mean there was edible plants and fish. I think he starved because he ate some type of possinous berry. The cause that is most likely is about the same as in the film.

  • I know in the movie he ate a poisonous plant...but I read in the book he froze.

  • the book begins with the detectives investigating the scene and finding his frozen body, i think. He might have not frozen to death. As far as the book goes, I always felt that Krakeau left the interpretation to the reader, as he never really states how he dies exactly.
