There's a big book on the V-22 in stores now, read a bit of it last year. Interesting read, about how some of the crashes happened. For example once a hydraulic loop failed, the backup loop worked but the computer hadn't been programmed for the fact that it would respond slower when only 1 system was working. So the computer went into unstable oscillations on the throttle trying to equalize the engines, they kept resetting it, which made it ovecompensate all over again... down they went.
@DaSantosx Hey guess what....this wasn't during a war. This was peace time and these guys died because of an accident....your money doesnt mean shit compared to these guys lives
@theunknownbuilders the pilot wasn't at fault here, for some reason the controls were set up wrong, and basically, it reversed all the controls, left = right is whats the problem here as in real life aircraft are inverted up/down
@pitkinator Wow, since we, "failing Americans" - that you love to hate, actually provide for your country's security you would think that you, your family, and your friends would appreciate us more. It's not your fault mate, you hate us, because you're taught to hate all who are more powerful and free than you. Bring on the hate if you can argue intelligently. My experience is that you'll get all emotional, angry, and start calling names and using foul language. Let's see what happens, LOL. ;)
@theboarman I enjoy and good debate; but, first, I have to understand what you're trying to say. Get out your French-to-English dictionary, adjust the internet connection on your igloo, and try again. That is if your Socialist government still allows you the freedom to speak openly. Poor brainwashed sheeple! BTW, it's 2011; who speaks French anymore? ;)
@theboarman nice avoidance tactic, but the fact is the united states uses depleted uranium in most off their ammo and is turning the place into a wasteland. good job on wasting both our time.
@qwsxz1000 In 1991 these were prototypes, you know, the time where test pilots risk their lives to test these aircraft so that other pilots don't get killed.
the huge problem was that you control the power wfor the left and right props with your feet and it was hard for pilots to give the correct amount of power i was told., now its all done with computers.
....and like a lot of deceptively simple questions, there really isn't a simple answer.
There were many factors to take into account. Chiefly, the ability of props to vary the thrust quickly using pitch control. Other factors included heat signature, noise, ingestion, air compression focus, etc.
Factors in favour of jets were: Simplicity, weight, performance, low gyroscopic force loading etc.
@Bra23we12 I know its only sci-fi but in the film Terminator took the idea of an Osprey and gave it Jet engines and that was way back in 1984, the same year Bell was awarded the contract for the idea and before any plans were even drawn.
Dstire no dstire69 (how ever u spell it cause I'm using my iPod) is right about the safety record about the osprey. If it is so dangerous why would it still be in service?
As far as the one being shot down I have no idea but most people just have to talk to sound SMRT (yes I spelled it wrong for a reason)
@iWatchVideoZz This reminds me of a time as a kid when I tried riding a bike with my arms crossed. Even though I knew what was happening (pulling with either arm turned me in the opposite direction as usual), it was impossible to overcome the trained reflex (or whatever it is) that made me pull my right arm harder the more it turned left. I went into the bushes... almost got impaled. Must be the same for a pilot when the wires are crossed, your reflexes take over and you can't override them ?
@YourLoyalDog This was the first accident in 1990 I think. The pilot made a mistake with the throttle. He pushed it forward to "dump collective" (in helicopter terms that means to adjust the pitch of the blades so as to decrease lift) but in the early V-22 this meant the engines went to full throttle since it was designed to be a cross between a collective lever and a trhust handle (they made it behave like a jet throttle). The pilot survived to tell the tale.
Imagine how horrible to be inside the cockpit in a moment like this, Osprey has a powerful engine and this noise added to the tension of the crash is surelly, at least, traumatizing (in case the victims survive)
From Airforcetimes website: crash investigation of Osprey in Qalat Afghan. April 2010 revealed engine failure. Military wanted chief investigator to change his report to "pilot error". "The stresses of flying in the dirt and dust of Afghanistan probably caused the engine problems" BGen. Harvel, chief investigator said. He was not allowed to brief the families of the 4 KIA onboard. Maybe Airforce wants to coverup the reliability problems of this overpriced $67M helo?
Too many people need to research this....video was shot on initial flight of the osprey. And it wasn't pilot error, it was a plug in the wrong connector causing the collective controls to act reversely. There hasn't been an osprey crash due to pilot or mechanical error for a long time, just the one shot down in the sandbox last year....some people just like to bitch about what they know nothing about I guess.
I'm not really sure why we reinvented the wheel with the V-22.
We had this technology completely functioning and workable in 1965 in the LTV XC-142, and also in the Canadair CL-84. Of course back then, the military didn't foresee an urgent need for a VTOL that had an extended combat radius. So here we are 40 years later reinventing the wheel at the cost of billions of taxpayer dollars.
I mean, why use something we've already developed when you could start from scratch and charge more.
You know, after twenty some odd years off research and development, you're still having problems, maybe it's just a piece of shit.... And speaking of shit, backup underpants are standard issue for every Osprey crewman. Okay, I made that up.
@LateNightCable lol thats exactly what i thought when i first read how long it has been in development and what went wrong....... hmmmmmmmm maybe the design just SUCKSSSSSS!!!! omg still cant believe people would pilot this shit :(
The problem the V-22s were having was hydraulic related. The hydraulic lines were vibrating loose from there support/clamps, then the chaffing lines would eventually rupture. The crashes were a result of loss of hydraulic control of one, or both, of the engine nacelles. I was a QA aircraft inspector at Edwards AFB at the time the Air Force was re-engineering and modifying the hydraulic lines and supports. It's been a reliable acft since the repairs.
Wrong! An airplane can glide like a glider plane, and a single rotor helicopter can do an emergency landing without the engine. The blades can be turned in a neutral postion so that when it drops from the sky, the wind wil propel the blades, and just before the ground the pilot is pulling the colletive up, so that wil give enough lift for a smooth landing. It's a one chance manouvre, but it works fine most of the time.
@3DPeter yeah, a drive shaft links both engines, so the left engine is powering both props at all times, as is the right engine. but if one fails, the power is halved but control is maintained
every aircraft requires alot of maintenance...do you work in aviation? i do, and i work at the facility that manufactures these VTOLs. they dont cost more to maintain or build than a fighter jet, and have hauled tons upon tons of soldiers and cargo to our guys over in the sandbox. id say that a couple going down over the last 20 years really isnt a bad percentage....but hey, what would i know? im just around em on a daily basis...
@dstire69, I really worry about the future of the human race when i see the amount of aviation experts on here, they'l fight like hell to tell you their right and you don't know jack, funny how the fakes say so much and the real people say so little isn't it! ;)
I was a flightline mechanic then a aircrewman, best time of my life. I'm seriously jealous that your around these, bet you've even had a flight you bastard!!! LOL
@dstire69 frist of all yes it is high and if a hornet fails wt does that tell you. And first of all if anything its the lack of maintenance and the lack of gunndecking plus i heard there a piece of trash
@dstire69 frist of all yes it is high and if a hornet fails wt does that tell you. And first of all if anything its the lack of maintenance and the lack of gunndecking plus i heard there a piece of trash
@dstire69 there are only 112 in service so 2 accidents is a lot already. If they were a commercial plane they would not be allowed to fly by the FAA. I think the $67M Ospreys were rushed into service and to hell how many soldiers and contractors are killed by accidents. 1st combat fatality 4 KIA April 2010 was due to engine failure which military tried to cover up. Lucky you you stay on the ground. Next time hitch a ride with the soldiers too, why don't you?
@dstire69 im not trying to be an ass but i dont think they should have replaced the pavelow, dont get me wrong there an amazing machine but then again the helicopter isnt that good of one
Why can't we cancel this damned project? Not even Dick Cheney likes it and Dick Cheney never met a defense project he didn't like. It's too expensive and doesn't even meet parameters. We need to stop saving things because they are cool because $210m a plane is just too much for something that doesn't even work right.
@Makron5 Actually I live in California right next to a base and I see these things fly perfectly find now judging by the crap quality and the voice this video must be years old

LOL

Derp. You would think after it failed to take off evenly they'd have just sat it back on the ground. Not said 'ah fuck it' and gave it some more.

thats not how to fly
15firekid 11 months ago
@flyingjerry um no, actually $67million each. Total project cost is $30 billion with over 400 built.
Also, there has been only 1 crash since 2000, and it was due to pilot error.
Kilonum 11 months ago
@Kilonum 67 for a marine version...closer to 90 for the CV air force version

Why can't we cancel this damned project? Not even Dick Cheney likes it and Dick Cheney never met a defense project he didn't like. It's too expensive and doesn't even meet parameters. We need to stop saving things because they are cool because $210m a plane is just too much for something that doesn't even work right.
Makron5 11 months ago
@Makron5 Actually I live in California right next to a base and I see these things fly perfectly find now judging by the crap quality and the voice this video must be years old
