I am trying to use 2 connectors and put one on each side of the round bucket. I put 1 outside the bucket and the other one on the inside and tighten it. But I keep on getting leaks. I am running 2 inch pipe though this section and can not find any 2 inch rubber washer for it. Any suggestions? Where did you get that 3 piece for the whole of the bucket? Yours looks really nice and tight. Mine is really wiggly.
Things to consider about your filtration system. No matter what your fish pond size is do not over look a bottom drain. You can find most of the parts to build a bottom drain at a hardware store. You can build an antivortex dome out of concrete as well. I used pvc end caps as feet on the one I built. Cure the concrete with vinegar to stabilize pH. SOmething else you want the cleanest water going through your pond pump. Use a settling chamber or put the pump after the filter. Don't forget air.
we had a junk pump from home depot then changed that to a ponmaster 1800. We Also added a tetra vaccum drain (not recomeded for smaller fish) The water level in the filter never got above the cut out. This is a good filter for a small pond or a QT system, however more filtration is better.
What kind of pump are you using? Also won't the fish waste lay on top of the blue filter sheet which may go back into the teeth cut tube and out to the pond?
bulk head adapters can be found at irrrgation places. However, you might want to see if you can find uniseals. You can get those from places that sell aquaponic supplies. You can allways get them online as well.
Hi, I just made one almost identical to yours using a rubbermaid tub. I hope yours is working fine cause I am counting on mine helping me keep three koi in temporary pool. I do not have the screen, but intend to use batting to keep the filter media down.
Heey, at home we have a pond of 7m long, 2 m weith and 1 to 2meters deep. (+- 21000 liters if i'm correct) When i was little we had +10 koi's, a few goldfish and 2 diamondsturgeons. The problem was my dad never made a filter. He bought a huge plastic container 2x2x2 but never made it into a filter. Now the water is green, full of alge and all the fish died 2years ago due to no oxigen in the pond. I thought for the fatherday( that passed i'm going to fix it after my exams)
@animeworldnr1 only prob is i don't know that much of filters. I thought to (we have a pomp) to let the water in at the top, water out at bottom and a hole just under the top so if there is a overflow it can go back pond (prob is then the unclear water gets back so i thought to use a flow regulator, turn thingy). At the bottom i would put rocks (+- half hand size), filter mat, bio-balls and another filter mat, and rocks once more. Is this good as a filter? Or are there problems with that?
The last thing about submersible pumps, as it takes in water in the pond it is also taking up poo. The poo goes in to the pump and gets micturated and blended into the water that goes into the filter. This is something you want to avoid. A great system makes sure that only water goes into the filter box. Many koi keepers have vortex chambers before the pump or main bio filter to prevent this from happening.
@bighatstephens no a great filter system has something like japanese matting or brusher to catch the poo it then it turned to nitrates and then nitrites
One thing that must be mentioned here, try and get away from submersible pumps if at all possible. Its not a matter of IF they short out, but when. This can kill your fish or shock you. Ponds have been accidently drained by submersible pumps because of a broken pipe or bad fittings. If the pump has to be in the water put it ontop of a milkcrate, at least then if it starts to drain your pond it won't drain it entirely. One more thing to add in another reply.
how do you clean this filter and how often would you need to clean this. Also you mentioned charcoal on top, could you use lava rock or any other type of rock? About what size of pond (gallons) would this filter accomodate. Lastly what size pump are you using. Great job thanks for putting it on.
@foodguy0202 Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. This filter has to be broken down to clean, but you don't want to super clean it. Remember that the biologicals in the box are what is turning the ammonia into nirite and the nitrite in to nitrate. The biologicals are also slow at reproducing. As long as the biologicals can latch on to it you can use it for media. We have had good success with lavarock. You might want to try putting it in a mesh bag for easy removal and rinsing.
@jzxiong sorry it took so long to get back to you. The blue mat is a washable poly blend furnace filter from Home Depot. However it is strongly recomended to get Japanese mat or Matala. It is more expensive, but will not break down like the furnace filter. Life span on the furnace filter is aobut 3 months. Japanese mat practicly lasts forever.
sorry it took so long to get back to you. The pipe with the holes in it dispearses the water more evenly over the filter media. If the water poored in you would have basicaly one spot of the media getting consistantly hit by water. This can cause channeling, meaning that one spot in the filter is doing all the work.
Yes they are pool noodles, we got them at the dollar store. We have been happy with them. They provide ample surface area, the porus surface gives the bacteria something to grab onto, and the shape helps to create eddy currents. Just remember that stuff floats. You need something to keep the media from floating out of the box. We know that our bacteria are happy because our Nitrites and Ammonia are consistantly low.

@bighatstephens Then why do people have bottom drains in ponds that are meant to pull all of the waste from the pond into the filter by the pump.

Do you have to have that pipe with the holes in? Can you just have a pipe that chucks water into the filter and comes out the outflow?

Do those pool noddles really work as a filter media? Well, i think that's what you're using right?
