You should not have took the prefilter off. You got sediment in the check valve. It could not close so when you were pumping it did not create a vacume(it just pulled water or air from the output hose. In other words, as someone else also wrote in wich you dismissed the notion without a valid argument. YOU CLEANED IT OUT AND PRIMED THE PUMP. Wich you could have done in the field. I sincerly hope your not an aspiring survivalist.
@tapeay2 he is learning. we f*ck up, we correct the problem, we don't f*ck up again in that specific manner. being able to learn is rather the point of survivalism. He had a backup on his hiking trip, so his mistake caused no problems, and now he has two filters, which work, and that he knows how to keep working. 'i hope you're not an aspiring survivalist'. how about you try to share and correct, and not so condescending?
As an added protective measure, it's always good to put a bandana or a t-shirt over the pre-filter (the end you place in the water) to better filter out the sediment and to prevent your filter from clogging.
You've obviously never done an hike that's lasted more than a day. There's no room for beer when you have to pack food for a week... I do bring either some whiskey, rum, or vodka though because it takes up a lot less room and can double as a disinfectant in a pinch!
I case you did bit know it your tap water has small amounts of Chlorine which kills bacteria and other nasties in the water system. Cholrine is bleach...read the bleach bottle. I also suggest that you use UNsented our in this case UNflavored bleach for cleaning water filters.
I think the formula is something like 8 drops to a gallon of water will kill the bugs.
I think what NewGuy meant is: is this video really copyrighted? I thought that any video uploaded by a YouTube user was under the Creative Commons license (can be used in anyway except commercially). I think the only things that can be copyrighted are music, movies, TV shows, etc (commercial items).
I have the veripen water purifier that uses UV light to eradicate pathogenic microorganisms, and you can get the version that has a solar battery charger, it is pretty sweet but cost a pretty penny too. I figure you don't want to mess around with Giardia and stuff. I still need to get a filter though.
Terrible videos

I wonder about soaking a filter in an iodine/water solution to make an old filter type. I too have an old PUR filter. love the videos!

Aww man, I was about to buy 6 of those.
Why are you having to do this? As much as they cost, They should just send you a replacement!

By filling it half way you prime the pump.
