The thing is an alien who crash lands on a backwater planet, frozen for over a million years and wakes up to find possibly what it thinks is possibly the only life forms on a frozen wasteland of a planet. It tries to get off world quietly by only consuming the lower lifeforms (the dogs) but ohh no pesky humans always want to burn it.. it had no choice but to consume them.. that's the perspective from the alien side.
what john carpenter does best is his music , it sets the tone so much, not massive scores just simple beats. play any piece of music and you know excatly what film it comes from ,from the fog to holloween to escape from new york. this score to brings out the isolation and trepidation of it all . or am i just bonkers
If you don't have: exploding blood, heads that split in half and eat you, heads that sprout legs and walk around, Wilford (DIABEETUS) Brimley building a fucking UFO out of tin cans, or a dog that can dodge bullets shot by a Norwegian man...
it would be good to hear the Things perspective on all this ruckus cause it sure had a bad few days.
crashed hard and burned - unplanned.
froze solid for 100 million years - unplanned. then, it gets dug up by some norwegians, wakes up all confused - and then what?..
if it was me i'd try and ask somebody just wtf is going on....geuss the way it asks didn't work out so well for Thing and it just wanted to get away from all these crazy humans you can't even ask them a simple damn question.
This movie was genius in how gruesome they made those monsters. I bet the way the creatures transformed was a big influence on the Necromorph designs in the video game Dead Space.
It's sad that The Thing had to be overlooked when it came out in 1982.
I remember when I first watched this (I think it was on HBO or something) 7 or 8 years ago.
I had to go outside to do something (I dont remember what) and the old scruffy dog that hangs out in our yard walks up to me...I had just finished watching the kennel scene....I looked at the dog and said "Oh...fuck...don't change into a thing...!" I was freaked out for 2 weeks after I saw this movie....hardly any movies have dont that to me....this is an amazing movie!!!
Forget a remake. I think Carpenter should do a sequel. A bunch of people go to the Antarctic several years later, find the frozen bodies, they thaw one of them out, and it starts all over again.
yeah.....and I hope they use old, convincing characters like the ones in this movie, although WIndows and Fuchs were young actors, they weren't obnoxiously bad or pretentious you know what I mean? they blended well as more submissive young people.
I agree! I've always a sequel to The Thing would be great! Same thing you say about going back and finding the frozen bodies but then transporting them back to lab in the USA and the cycle of infection starts all over again.
"Hmm...Dr., this looks like a frozen black male, age 32, with a flamethrower....."
They thaw him out and he just disintegrates into a monster. But I'd like them to avoid a sort of widespread scenerio like in zombie movies.
That'd just ruin it. It'd be good to have the alien trap the investigators in the Antarctic by disabling the plane or chopper overnight and stuff. It'd be interesting....and then they find refuge in a worn out house and shit lol...terrible situation.
The 80's was THE decade for horror movies, mostly because of anamatronics. These days it's mostly just CG, CG, CG, which is a shame, because, in my personal opinion, CG will NEVER come close to what can be done with good anamatronics. I have to agree that for certain things however CG IS necessary (show me how you could do that T-Rex chasing the jeep scene in Jurassic Park with anamatronics). Aliens probably stands out as my all-time favourite horror movie. The Queen alien to me is AMAZING.
have you seen John Carpenters Prince Of Darkness, thats scary, it stills frightens me everytime i watch it....really creepy with a great cameo by Alice Cooper, i recommend it if you havent seen it.
This movie was amazing!!! But I laughed so hard when I was watching it with my fam on the part where the was transforming and all the guys were screaming and trying to hop away on the chairs and when he grabbed the guy's face and was swinging him around in the air and it looked like he was dancing!!!:D
Alien will always be a classic movie (although I think Aliens trumps it). In the end I think it all comes down to one's own personal preferences though...
Aliens is entertaining yeah, but how to compare them? Both are sci-fi but Alien is a horror film and Aliens is an action film. Aliens only really adds decoration to the story: some good characters (Paxton, Beihn), big loud explosions from The Marines, a kid, and the Sigorney fight at the end. All the other real great stuff is story from the first film. And I don't think James Cameron is nearly as great as Ridley Scott.
This movie was awesome but I was so young it deeply disturbed me cuz I love dogs and all that. But damn what a terrifying awesome movie, and probably the only movie thats actually scary to me!
Man, John Carpenter sure knows how to tell a story! In today's CGI-layered world, it's easy for people to forget just how intimidating, how scary, a real-life thing is. No matter how well trained they are, an actor will always react to something they can see versus a tennis ball on a stick.
it all depends on the actors. no offence, but if they get some "hoo rah" american actors in it,it'll suck.
i'm not saying american actors are bad,i mean, they better not re-do it as a load of "hoo yeah! eat this ya sons of bitches! i'm gonna fry your mother fuckin' ass" etc.
out of everyone that i have ever known that has seen this movie , not one of them said this movie was terrible one bit , and it is by far the greatest sci-fi horror movie ever

they says that the thing ate its victim... digest it then... that thing will emulate the appearance of its victim.... if am not mistaken... correct me if am wrong....
Dude, I saw this movie when it came out nearly over 25 yrs. ago and I have NEVER heard ANYONE say it sucked. This is one of the all-time GREATEST sci-fi horror films PERIOD!!!
VERY FREAKY movie--kind of had a haunting effect on my mind for awhile after I saw it. I am going to play Dead Space soon, and it looks kind of similar.
Agreed--that's how I played Doom 3 a few years back, and it was a trip. I am using a Thrustmaster T510 Dolby Digital decoder which converts 2 channel to 5.1 for headphones--sounds wicked. Also, I got a 28 inch display recently, so it's gonna be fun. Probably will scare the crap out of me I'm thinking.
The Thing infects other creatures and basically assimilates them. Anything it has assimilated it can immitate and every part of the Thing is an individual living being that can act as its own individual if it breaks off something the Thing has infected as another Thing.
But all those individuals make up a singular consciousness. In the book that's what the author hinted at anyways, that they were all telepathically connected and despite each trying to survive on its own, a singular consciousness.
Yes, right on. Just as the thing is connected as one keeping it viable despite its imperfection in trying to imitate the host, we as human depend on each other for survival for by nature we are social animal. Our imperfection however is that our egos are individualistic and not a collective singular consciousness...this limit in our living in a group setting is manifested by social strife, crime, civil war. How can i trust you not to eat me if you could be in your early stage of infection?
When I saw this, my spine almost snapped through tension.
I'll never forget that poor damn victim-dog trying to bite it's way through a wire fence to just get the fuck out of that kennel.
Genius movie making - in just those few shots alone you learnt enough to tell you that, whatever was in that room, whatever was there, pissed-off and screaming in the dark - in amongst the dogs...whatever it was: it was Pure Hell...
omg you too. shit son I was like 7. I've never seen anything like it. Even now no horror films ever match the disturbance compared to this. This is the worst of the worst. I'm just glad nothing like that actually exist. Fuck it would be hard to avoid.
The problem is that you reveal in your video, which is a very good job, a great part of the interesting moments of the film! I've never seen a movie like that... This is a masterpiece.
This, I think, is the only scary movie with the perfect blend of suspense, scariness, and blood and gore. All those other "scary" movies are just cheap and don't really scare me. John
Carpenter is the only director of scary movies to have ever scared the ever-living shit out of me.
Damn this is old school i was scared as shit back in the day The Thing this is classic now adaysthe movies suck old school forever want to hook up with a dude on a saturdaynight and cuddle and watch this yeah baby!!!
You just gotta love the cracking! GREAT MOVIE! And there also a great South Park episode when their gonna do the Blood thingy test :) haha SO freaking funny:)
I think what makes scary movies is a group of people together and they are trying to figure out what the hell is goin on while one by one they get taken down. This movie is awesome
Also, has anyone ever noticed the similarities between the Thing transformations? Like how the Palmer-Thing has Bennings ugly hands but it sounds like the Dog-Thing. And how the Norris Thing sounds like the Bennings-Thing but has the physical features similar to the Dog-Thing like the Spider or Crab legs.
Thats what makes this movie great. Lots of unanswered questions, like that I have: Whos shadow was on the wall, Palmer or Norris? Was Fuchs really a Thing who killed himself so "it" wouldn't be exposed? If not, then did Fuchs kill himself or did someone else kill Fuchs? When did Blair change? Who passed Fuchs when the lights blew out? Could MacReady have been a Thing and Childs been human? Many reasons why The Thing is a favorite of mine. Love the unanswered questions.
great job on putting this together! i've never seen this movie, but my boyfriend did when he was little and said it was scary. i thought it might look lame b/c its so old (well..4yrs older than me LOL) but after seeing these clips, i'm going to have to rent it!
Who assimilated Blair?? & Was he assimilated before or after being locked in the shed? I presume after .Who do you think the DOG got first Palmer or Norris?? I don`t know..Maybe Palmer, as he was more than likely smoking a joint & the dog saw an easy target..
I think the dog got to Palmer first as well. Notice before the shadow turns around, it looks like Norris but at the profile view, you can see the neck is slimmer, much like Palmers and also like he has headphones around his neck, like when Palmer had on. Right after Childs torched the Dog-Thing, look and stop at Palmers profile when he turns to look at MacReady, same as the shadow on the wall. Hmm.....
yeah i never understood how Blair got infected, either. Though im pretty sure he was infected after they put him in the shed. I think jsheehan07 is right about palmer,
Very well put together. This movie scared the hell out of me as a kid. Between this and "Prince of Darkness" didnt get much rest in the 80s at night lol.
Thanks for reminding me about this film, got to go find it again.
I'd have to say that The Thing, Event Horizon, Alien and Aliens are the greatest Sci Fi horror movies I've seen in my life (although Aliens is more action driven). The way Windows got attacked by Palmer in this movie makes Windows the most unlucky motherfucker in horror film history imo. That scene fucked me up as a kid, still disturbs me as an adult...
Hey you two Thing Movie experts, did we actually see Mac draw (his own blood) from himself?? or could it have been the non infected stolen blood he used to flame on in the petrie dish??..Did his flamethrower really misfire before he had a chance help Windows before he got whacked?? mmmmm??
WHy then, would Mac kill Blair thing at the end, no reason to say "fuck you too" and blast the monster when noone was looking. Don't move away from the plot, instead, use facts:
Mac dropped the flamethrower and this probably caused it to malfunction.
Mac likely stayed in the room the whole time to show that he was human and honest about the blood.
Proof Childs was the thing- widely agreed by many film reviewers and critics:
1. Childs had a different jacket and the thing has been demonstrated to rip thru people's clothes
2. Childs totally abandoned his post to wait for Blair but instead mysteriously runs OUT[something probably got to him here(perhaps Blair)] ALso, he has a blue jacket here
3. Childs is consistent in asking for Mac's advice to save themselves(therby saving the organism)
To disprove this wildely accepted theory, you must DISPROVE the points made without TWISTING the plot around...
ANd isn't it wierd how Mac destroys the computer in the beginning with his J&B Beer and at the end gives Childs a drink of the J&B?? Perhaps an inside metaphor/forshadow...
Yeah...this prolly the scariest movie I've ever seen. Mainly because there hasn't been a movie yet that had my brother lock himself up for 2 days in his room.
either way guys, this is just one of many underestimated films.... sooo many conclusions can come out of this movie.. the thing could have escaped the dog kennel, it probably didnt burn all the way in the last scene, notice how it came out from the floor... a shit load of things can happen... to me the game was like a sequal, to bad it wasnt a movie... the movie can go on and on if it reached civilized areas...
What, 20 years later, you're the guy that "proves" it was Childs? Get over yourself.
All your "evidence" for fact, is just circumstantial supposition. We'll never know for sure who was who - and that's deliberate. Carpenter left it that way; because that's pretty much the theme of the movie. You arrogant ass.
That's why you look so foolish. Your "evidence" neither proves, nor disproves anything - it's just supposition and contrivance and meaningless as an argument. You're trying to resolve the unresolvable, which makes you an idiot, and also trying convince others that you make sense, which makes you deluded. God, you make me laugh 'til I shit.
the absolute intention: and with that, all your bullshit theorising won't make a shit's worth of difference to anything or anyone else except you. Oh, the game? Fuck it. It was franchised off the movies name, using the movie as a template, yes - but the fact it doesn't mesh with the movie is irrrelvant. You seem to be blindly intent, like some insane squirrel, on gathering "evidence " to support the preconception of your own confused mind - both of which elements are as flawed as the intention.
Open minded? Hmm. Your saying that you are, right. Uh-huh, listen to yourself.
You really are insane. Rob Agers? Fuck him. One delusional prick educating another in Irrelevancies.
You know what? Yeah, let's say you're amazing. And that your bullshit, cock-eyed ramblings really do make sense. And let's say your crazed shit-talk is actually some kind of evidence for something.
The thing is an alien who crash lands on a backwater planet, frozen for over a million years and wakes up to find possibly what it thinks is possibly the only life forms on a frozen wasteland of a planet. It tries to get off world quietly by only consuming the lower lifeforms (the dogs) but ohh no pesky humans always want to burn it.. it had no choice but to consume them.. that's the perspective from the alien side.

edward18517 3 years ago
So, once is inside the victim make a clone of it? or it start living and controlling the original body?
bauhausman 3 years ago
it's hard to tell what the process is exactly or if the people that are infected even know they're the Thing
edward18517 3 years ago
no the victim is absorded so then the thing can then immitate them
UserUK201 3 years ago
But all those individuals make up a singular consciousness. In the book that's what the author hinted at anyways, that they were all telepathically connected and despite each trying to survive on its own, a singular consciousness.
UserUK201 3 years ago 2
like a hive mind?
treehobo 3 years ago
yep
UserUK201 3 years ago
Yes, right on. Just as the thing is connected as one keeping it viable despite its imperfection in trying to imitate the host, we as human depend on each other for survival for by nature we are social animal. Our imperfection however is that our egos are individualistic and not a collective singular consciousness...this limit in our living in a group setting is manifested by social strife, crime, civil war. How can i trust you not to eat me if you could be in your early stage of infection?

You should've kept the scene where the old guy says "i dont wanna spend the whole of winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING CHAIR!!" so funny.

This movie scared the hell out of me when I was a kid. I didn't even want to play with my dog for a few weeks after seeing this.
Simmy34 3 years ago
This, I think, is the only scary movie with the perfect blend of suspense, scariness, and blood and gore. All those other "scary" movies are just cheap and don't really scare me. John
Carpenter is the only director of scary movies to have ever scared the ever-living shit out of me.

JSheehan07 3 years ago
Thats what makes this movie great. Lots of unanswered questions, like that I have: Whos shadow was on the wall, Palmer or Norris? Was Fuchs really a Thing who killed himself so "it" wouldn't be exposed? If not, then did Fuchs kill himself or did someone else kill Fuchs? When did Blair change? Who passed Fuchs when the lights blew out? Could MacReady have been a Thing and Childs been human? Many reasons why The Thing is a favorite of mine. Love the unanswered questions.
JSheehan07 3 years ago
great job on putting this together! i've never seen this movie, but my boyfriend did when he was little and said it was scary. i thought it might look lame b/c its so old (well..4yrs older than me LOL) but after seeing these clips, i'm going to have to rent it!
aquacrow86 3 years ago
Who assimilated Blair?? & Was he assimilated before or after being locked in the shed? I presume after .Who do you think the DOG got first Palmer or Norris?? I don`t know..Maybe Palmer, as he was more than likely smoking a joint & the dog saw an easy target..
Ub3rSk1llz 3 years ago
I think the dog got to Palmer first as well. Notice before the shadow turns around, it looks like Norris but at the profile view, you can see the neck is slimmer, much like Palmers and also like he has headphones around his neck, like when Palmer had on. Right after Childs torched the Dog-Thing, look and stop at Palmers profile when he turns to look at MacReady, same as the shadow on the wall. Hmm.....
JSheehan07 3 years ago
yeah i never understood how Blair got infected, either. Though im pretty sure he was infected after they put him in the shed. I think jsheehan07 is right about palmer,

Very well put together. This movie scared the hell out of me as a kid. Between this and "Prince of Darkness" didnt get much rest in the 80s at night lol.

That scene fucked me up as a kid, still disturbs me as an adult...
mellowman1978 3 years ago
Hey you two Thing Movie experts, did we actually see Mac draw (his own blood) from himself?? or could it have been the non infected stolen blood he used to flame on in the petrie dish??..Did his flamethrower really misfire before he had a chance help Windows before he got whacked?? mmmmm??
Ub3rSk1llz 3 years ago
WHy then, would Mac kill Blair thing at the end, no reason to say "fuck you too" and blast the monster when noone was looking. Don't move away from the plot, instead, use facts:
Mac dropped the flamethrower and this probably caused it to malfunction.
Mac likely stayed in the room the whole time to show that he was human and honest about the blood.
third, he kills Palmer when everyones tied up
tynoobi 3 years ago
The fact that were all arguing about this, should be enough to prove this movie is one of the best movies of all time.
illiterateblasphemY 3 years ago
Well I'd perfer to say debating, but other then that I agree 100%.
bjchit 3 years ago
Proof Childs was the thing- widely agreed by many film reviewers and critics:
1. Childs had a different jacket and the thing has been demonstrated to rip thru people's clothes
2. Childs totally abandoned his post to wait for Blair but instead mysteriously runs OUT[something probably got to him here(perhaps Blair)] ALso, he has a blue jacket here
3. Childs is consistent in asking for Mac's advice to save themselves(therby saving the organism)
4. Mac obviously suspects something is wrong
tynoobi 3 years ago
To disprove this wildely accepted theory, you must DISPROVE the points made without TWISTING the plot around...
ANd isn't it wierd how Mac destroys the computer in the beginning with his J&B Beer and at the end gives Childs a drink of the J&B?? Perhaps an inside metaphor/forshadow...
tynoobi 3 years ago
No. Their just sharing a drink.

bad ass movie though...
cfh87cfp 3 years ago
either way guys, this is just one of many underestimated films.... sooo many conclusions can come out of this movie.. the thing could have escaped the dog kennel, it probably didnt burn all the way in the last scene, notice how it came out from the floor... a shit load of things can happen... to me the game was like a sequal, to bad it wasnt a movie... the movie can go on and on if it reached civilized areas...
cfh87cfp 3 years ago
Cult horror movie!simply awesome!
metalpej 3 years ago
ffs dude the evidence speaks for itself
first of all why would Mac kill Blair Giant monster had he been a thing? strange? not really...cuz he obviously wasn't
The game holds many errors against the film-- I mean it was made freakin decades afterwards
the game has barely anything conclusive on it
look at how Childs talks in the end of the film, now that by itself is strange
tynoobi 3 years ago
It's in your mind.
You arrogant ass.
biteitoff 3 years ago
first of all, calling me an arrogant ass doesn't help your argument,....second of all..your the arrogant ass:
1. CHilds is wearing a different jacket
2. Childs talks strangely
3.MacReady is obviously not the thing becuase he killed Blair Monster
4. Macready is not acting strange in any way
5. MacReady sort of suspects Child's intentions when he says "how will WE make it?"
Mac- "Maybe we shouldn't"
geez I thought the open door shot would give it away you are arrogant/ignorant
tynoobi 3 years ago
doesn't matter how long ago it was, the evidence speaks for itself; Childs is the thing
different jacket, strange, relatively calm questions on how to "make it" out of there
well, Maybe they shouldn't...
btw mister I'm the "the guy" that proves Childs is the thing-- it's been suggested by many film reviewers..cuz the evidence leads to it
so, if you don't mind, you're the arrogant ass fighting an uphill battle
the game just isn't consistent with the movie
tynoobi 3 years ago
That's why you look so foolish. Your "evidence" neither proves, nor disproves anything - it's just supposition and contrivance and meaningless as an argument. You're trying to resolve the unresolvable, which makes you an idiot, and also trying convince others that you make sense, which makes you deluded. God, you make me laugh 'til I shit.
biteitoff 3 years ago
you actually think that this is a blind guess???
Child has a different coat A DIFFERENT DAMN COAT
are you fucking blind?? A DIFFERENT DAMN COAT
THe Thing rips thru ppl's clothes when they die.
Plus HE talks like he didn't give a shit about the explosion and just asks Mac how to "make it outta there"
the open door scene wasn't suspicious enough for you?
Very open minded you idiot
youre the one making blind statements
tynoobi 3 years ago
the absolute intention: and with that, all your bullshit theorising won't make a shit's worth of difference to anything or anyone else except you. Oh, the game? Fuck it. It was franchised off the movies name, using the movie as a template, yes - but the fact it doesn't mesh with the movie is irrrelvant. You seem to be blindly intent, like some insane squirrel, on gathering "evidence " to support the preconception of your own confused mind - both of which elements are as flawed as the intention.
biteitoff 3 years ago
heres a lil something for you.. biteitoff asshole.
Google to Rob Agers The Thing analysis of films
tynoobi 3 years ago
Open minded? Hmm. Your saying that you are, right. Uh-huh, listen to yourself.
You really are insane. Rob Agers? Fuck him. One delusional prick educating another in Irrelevancies.
You know what? Yeah, let's say you're amazing. And that your bullshit, cock-eyed ramblings really do make sense. And let's say your crazed shit-talk is actually some kind of evidence for something.
Now: what the fuck have you actually achieved?
You stupid cunt.
biteitoff 3 years ago
Dude,....you act like an uneducated 14 year old dropout from highschool
Have you studied literature? Do you know what foreshadowing and drawing conclusions is all about?
And yes I am open Minded, this is not just a theory, it is accepted as FACT by most fans
in which you seem to be delusional cause your ignoring the evidence Childs is the thing, end of story. Roger that bitch
tynoobi 3 years ago
"Yada, yada, yada; gibbada, gibbada; accepted as fact; blabbada, blabbada, blaa".
I see - so now, it's "ACCEPTED as fact"? "By MOST fans"?...Hmm.
Literature? I'd like to know what do you think is literate about this endless river of random, half-baked shit you seem to think is a thought process?
Please shut the fuck up, will you, and just admit yourself to the nearest mental welfare facility?
You have spent too much time alone.
You are insane. Fuck...
biteitoff 3 years ago
dude! what the fuck...you are gibbering ad jabbering about shit when I ask you a simple question: How am I wrong?
How am I wrong. Prove me wrong about Childs being assimilated by the Thing. Go ahead, you keep dodging the fuckin question
You just keep insulting, insulting and insulting just helping my argument lol
You probably come to the conclusion too and are too sissyfuck to admit it.
