Americans are too wasteful with their resources. Even the President is powerless to stop it as long as the government is a fully owned by the pharmacutical, oil, automotive and tobacco industries.
We have the shortest attention span and can't anything done. We also fundamentally believe in the "fake it until you make it" doctrine that leaves lots of holes in understanding things. Some other countries do not have this practice that so engrained into people's heads here. The majority of americans DO NOT speak a foreign language and are not capable of comparing out country to another country. In other countries, presidential candidates talk about real issues for starters. This is disneyland.
Americans have the exact same cares we have in europe. If they get 20 miles a gallong it's their fault for buying a stupid suv instead of a decent car.
@tugafighter You have SUVs that get 20 mpg? Most of ours barely get 15. If you have a truck it usually averages around 10. My car (a 4-door sedan) averages around 24 mpg, but it was the only one I could afford that was under 150,000 miles.
Sure there are cars that can get up to 50 mpg. They also cost an arm and a leg (and maybe a few internal organs as well), so the only ppl who buy them are either rich or stupid enough to borrow that much money for a car they'll never pay off.
Whatever your political affiliation, your top priority should be constitutional reform to fix government. American politics is like people in a car arguing how to make the engine run faster when the steering wheel has come loose..
Ironic to see that this really isn't something exclusive to the US - pretty much every nation whether they be in the G8, the G20 or simply the Gee Whiz are dragging their feet while politicians of every creed, colour and lack of common sense line their pockets with taxpayers' money - the whole planet needs a revolution and to deport these greedy, slow moving neanderthals to Antarctica, probably the only place they might not be able to fuck up...
@bored1ca too good for them they could still cause problems, no what you need is to-set an example, if people are going to let greed, ambition, and their own self centered views to turn them against their fellow man, selling each other out, killing, enslaving each other, for money, fame, stature, then they deserve death, execute these people on the charge of treason of humanity, maybe facing a death sentence will give these assholes a wake up call, maybe then we could see some humanity
@MAnnaconduit1 well I agree with you in principle, however we'd only be lowering ourselves to their level because let's face it, we already live in a rather violent society and half the wars going on might be seen as being ideological but the rest are for purely commercial reasons...
@bored1ca You make a good point but the system is now plagued with the kind of people Mannaconduit described. If we want to change things, and I mean all over the world; not solely in our respective countries, we indeed need to get rid of the greedy, the usurers and the corrupted. Permanently. Along with their spouses and affiliates.

it's depressing that this is 2 years old already, apparently Bill Maher's diatribes don't light a fire under the powers that be, who would have guessed
The American government needs to really decide if they're for capital of labour [substitute labour for simply people if you feel the word "labour" sets off "marxist!!" alarm bells]. Because it can't be for both. Once it decides the Dems decide who they're for, maybe progress can begin in the U.S.
p.s. I know basically every government in the world has this problem....but America is supposed to be the Great White Hope for democracy, something I don't feel current politicians truly believe in
@MenwithHill usa is corrupt at the top and the rot has spread throughout the society, the same people are trying to get you too, watch the moneymasters documentary
@MenwithHill - its getting that way. Its becoming a wasteland where the rich achieve increasingly obscene levels of wealth, while the poor die in the streets and nobody cares.
Our two-party system reminds me of those old Coke vs Pepsi taste tests. We get to choose between two options, ignoring the fact that both of them are overpriced and unhealthy for us.
@professor2442 There is a lovely episode of Boston Legal that kind of talks about that. Dems and Reps are so ridiculous in their campaigns against each other that at some times, they are just aiming for you to be slurping down at least one of them. As long as those are the only two products in your head, you'll never try the reasonably priced and simplistically ethical RC Cola :D Ahh...politics...
@professor2442 Too many people don't though :( Most don't even take a sip to try, and that embodies exactly how the politics kill us. These two major parties run their own primaries and voting policies, where delagates can vote completely opposite the consensus of an entire district. These are literally allowed to do it because the DNC and RNC are private organizations, they have to be to hide all the fucking money the corporations funnel them into prepping the next president though.
it is amazing thinking that the very same country that once had Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, that won the WW 2 and sent men to the moon now are stupid as it could be (the american people) and had elected the most moron of all mankind - G W Bush, the special needs president!
And they don't have a clue of why they are losing to China...

Am I glad I found this man maybe there is still hope for America. I am from Holland and the last 8 or 9 years I have thought there are strange destructive forces at work in the U.S.A. (especially for the little people). When Obama wants to tax the rich the counter argument is: "that is gonne rise the unemployment rate". Well here in Holland the rich people pay 52 % tax and the unemployment rate is just 5 % In the USA the rich pay 20 % or so and unemployment is 9 % (what to make of that)
You know what, fuck the banks, fuck the white house. I am at war. I am doing what little an individual can. But the more that start acting, the more dramatic the measures. Imagine how fun it would be to march on washington with millions of people? Someday the others will catch up and will be ready for action... I hope.
His comparison of the "On - Demand" button showing that Americans can get the unimportant stuff now but must wait for anything with significant importance reminds me of something Carlin once said:
"In America we have the illusion of choice, we have two political parties, a small number of oil companies, a handful of insurance companies but if you want a bagel there are 23 flavors because of the illusion of choice."
We have control over the unimportant things, not the important ones
newsflash, elitism is a party unto itself, they do not discriminate against parties. They run our economy, the "federal" reserve, our white house, and you.
@darrenholcomb42 There's a theory about economic cycles about 80 years long, with huge innovation at the bottom, and people just partying it up near the top. So the great depression fostered lots of innovation because people HAD to.
That was quite insightful, actually. What has happened to us. It seems that all of culture and politics specifically, has devolved to one big sporting event, where ppl are more intrested in shouting & picking sides then getting a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g done.

Maher thinks everyone is stupid and you have to push past stupidity, while Beck is a bit more optimistic. The rhetoric to me is what accounts for the audience.
