Okay, sure, with a little help from 25 million dead Soviets, 20 million dead Chinese, etc. The US lost more than 400,000 soldiers in WWII, and they were truly heroes. But the French, British, Yugoslavians, Dutch, Romanians, Indians -- all lost more than we did.

@v1e1r1g1e1 Exactly. The Marshall Plan was one of the last great things that the US did, and one of the most effective in getting the world to appreciate us, rather than hate us. It doesn't matter (certainly not to me) whether the motivation was humanistic (to help people) or political (to keep Europe from falling into the Soviet sphere). It was the right thing. Our record since then has not been as positive. We talk democracy but we act on economic rather than political principles.

This requires the American people to use democratic procedures to install governments, or checks & balances at various levels, to reduce/curtail global corporate greed. The mechanisms (and good will) are there; they aren't used sufficiently. All democracies must work against corporate exploitation. Marxism has never been shown to bring prosperity nationally. Instead, it regularly reverts to dictatorship.
@v1e1r1g1e1 I mostly agree with you. I think you overgeneralize in speaking of Marxism as though it is a single, monolithic entity. Communism has never resulted in anything other than totalitarianism. But there are many iterations of Marx's ideas at work in the world that are not Communist or totalitarian in any way. Mixed economies like Britain's maintain a much more robust social safety net than the US. Sweden, Denmark, and Finland have incorporated many Marxist ideas into their economies.

Heck, we could probably save a trillion dollars a year if we got rid of all the useless programs domestically and in the military we have. It doesn't matter (certainly not to me) whether the motivation was humanistic (to help people) or political (to keep Europe from falling into the Soviet sphere). It was the right thing. Our record since then has not been as positive. We talk democracy but we act on economic rather than political principles.

Communism has never resulted in anything other than totalitarianism. But there are many iterations of Marx's ideas at work in the world that are not Communist or totalitarian in any way. Mixed economies like Britain's maintain a much more robust social safety net than the US. Sweden, Denmark, and Finland have incorporated many Marxist ideas into their economies.
