Why can't he just enjoy something for what it is? Why the unrelenting criticism? Perhaps if he put something out that was beyond criticism he'd be more respected using this tone.
The Del Boy sketch is funny in the context of the episode but as Mr Lee points out, it's also the most overplayed comedy clip in the history of the world.
I reckon that Ant and Dec portrait sketch could have been pulled off well and made genuinely sinister by the Big Train lot, Heap, Eldon, etc. back in the day.
The Del Boy sketch is very funny, and I doubt whether Lee actually hates it. He is just lampooning those irritating '100 Funniest Moments' clip shows on C4, (hosted by Jimmy Carr).
Guess what; the scene in Only Fools and Horses where Del Boy falls through the bar (in context of the episode) and this parody of it are BOTH funny. That is entirely possible.
9 times out of 10, the idea of a middle-class public schoolboy ridiculing 'the masses' would turn my stomach, but Stewart Lee does it so imaginitively and ridiculously that he gets away with it.
@Sharpoon you may have noticed, but Stuart Lee is not referring to it in the kindest way. Just because something is talked about, it doesn't mean it's a good thing. For example, I had a conversation with friends yesterday about the old sitcom "Love Thy Neighbour". If you're British, you'll note it's not shown on BBC1 in the afternoons. That's because it was really fucking racist and terrible. Yet we are still talking about it all these years later, but not because it was iconic and influential.
@Sharpoon Being British, I have, in fact, watched episodes Of Only Fools and Horses. It's light-hearted, family comedy. Slightly low-brow. Harmeless fun. However, to call a stereo typed "cockney wide-boy" falling over, while his borderline mentally-ill friend makes a funny face "iconic and influential" is a bit like saying Black Lace (you remember Agadoo, don't you) were musical visionaries, and Robert Kilroy-Silk was a broadcasting pioneer.
@Sharpoon but.... REALLY? You think Del Boy falling over is funnier that Stewart Lee? I not getting it. I'm trying to understand, I am. But..... REALLY?
Can't believe people are comparing this to del boy's bar sketch, the bar scene is ridiculous, border-line slapstick. It's very very funny but Lee isn't anything like that sort of the comedy he's alternative sarcastic and satirical, comparing the two is the comedy equivilent of comparing Johnny Wilkinson and David Beckham, both very good, but they do different things.

In reference to the funniest thing on t.v.For me it was 911 when those planes crashed into the world trade center twin towers.Could not stop laughing...am still laughing about it today.Stewart Lee could never conceive of and carry out such a piece of comedy.
and then Trigger would make a face.... Stewart Lee. He's always been consistently brilliant from Fist Of Fun onwards. I'd love to see him do stand up live.
@Artifphlex I think they're in there to make it more televisual as opposed to straight stand-up. It makes sense, but the end result isn't great I agree.
Look, 9:40, it's the actor Kevin Eldon.

@halfpennystudios He has. He might even like like that scene. It's just a joke. You obviously don't get Stewart Lee at all.

I find the clip, about 100% funnier, knowing steward lee HATES it so much

@Edae001 of which Lee is he the steward ?
I love these clips and it makes it roughly 97% funnier knowing how much they confuse idiots.
