@veryslyfox LOL! I left Kentucky and went to California after watching this series for years. Then I became a cop out there. CHP's didn't do half the crap that they showed in the TV show! I still loved the show and even went by the CHP station in the TV series. That was cool.
How many of you guys used to kick start your bicycle as kids and pretend to ponch and jon....I know I did. KZ-1000 was the coolest police bike ever!!!
i loved this show as a kid, but even then i could tell it was fake. cars going like 20 mph on a closed freeway and crashing all crazy. still cool tho.
@gearboxbreaker would love too have any one of them cars from the 70;s today not crashed of course! lol lol cars suck today and cost way way more then what they originally should be!
this was filmed in Los Angeles,Ca and the San Fernando Valley of California , a 1970s Television show "CHIPS" was one of my favorite television shows while I was a teenager guy who grew up in Burbank, Ca. Broadcast district and Motion Picture Industry all around me at that time.
billy dee williams? lando? really? hmn .. he didn't stand out that much in my mind as far as mustaches are concerned. definite space player though, leia watch out.
what about man at arms? (he-man) he is known as porn-stache. for that matter, what about ron jeremy? that mans gotta be old enough to count in the 70's if not late 60's.
@spadehatesscrewtube Billy Dee's got game, which probably added extra mustache points in my mind. Ron Jeremy is a great choice...now that's a pornstache!
@spadehatesscrewtube That was the great mustache decade. Not to take away from Erik's mustache, but I wouldn't even put his in the top 10. That's how excellent the mustaches were back then...what I'd give to have my walrus mustache and 14-inch Afro again!
@spadehatesscrewtube Great mustaches, but I see Selleck as more of an 80s guy because of Magnum PI. Salvador Dali's mustache is timeless in its greatness. I think a great 70s mustache would definitely be Burt Reynolds, or maybe Billy Dee Williams.
class show from my youth, but being a biker myself of all the things on this vid that stands out is, HOLY CRAP did they really ride on those tyres they look like solid rubber of a 1970's push bike.
Glory days of tv. Seems like the guest stars on shows in the 70's and 80's really bounced around a lot before some either faded away or got their own show.
So when's Hollywood gonna make a new modern movie update on CHIPS? Wait a minute (i remember what they did with dukes o hazard , charlie angels , miami vice ! o shit ) - NEVER MIND NEVER MIND HOLLYWOOD - ITS A BAD IDEA - BAD IDEA Dont make a update - shit i gave them ideas - oh no
@rodian10 No, I met him at one of the timeshares he advertised on TV as part of the company's promotion. He actually had a strong odor of beans emanating from him. Quite frankly, I'm rather insulted by your connotations of racism, even more so since I am the president of my city's NAACP chapter.
@frrrrrunkis Well, since you carelessly dispense comments like that, especially associating "beans with Latinos" reeks of racism! You representing the NAACP & saying garbage like that is very irresponsible & unforgivable, the NAACP would be wise to kick you're ass out!!
@rodian10 I'm not lying, I'm not making racial generalizations, I'm not doing anything like that. I just stated a fact that I had noticed in actually meeting the man. I may have commented a little too off the cuff, which has no doubt lead to your presumptions on what kind of person I am. Those presumptions, however, tell a lot more about the kind of person you are rather than myself.
love chips! specially because I lived in west la for 8 years. These opening sequence is on 10E and the street chase scenes were mostly done around west LA when it was not that crowded.
I liked CHiPs, but I honestly have 2 things that peeved me with it. For one thing, they never felt the need to use firearms ( I mean they're cops!! WTH??). The other thing was Erik Estrada feeling the need to "hog" all the scenes he was in.
@rodian10 Part of the reason why Erik Estrada felt the need to "hog" all the scenes is that when "CHiPS" became noticed to viewers, people were into his Ponch character. When network execs see that, they want more of it on the show, that is why there was so much of Erik Estrada. This was part of the reason why Larry Wilcox left after Season 5. He felt that his character was less noticed at the time, even though fans appreciated both he and Estrada.
@pretendaccount1 blue too, with the obligatory inverted 'u' shape mudgaurds coz you folded them back to rub of the tyres and sound like a motorbike, goddamn will we ever see such halcyon days
Here's some trivia. When Season 2 started, the theme was updated by Alan Silvestri who has just done the music for the new Captain America movie, Back to the Future, The Mummy, and a whole lot of other movies.
30 years ago my little cousin was in California, he was about 6 years old and ran into a CHP officer in a restaurant. My little cousin asked the officer if he knew John and Ponch, the officer played along, said he knew them well and my little cousin asked if he would say "hi" to them. The officer said he would tell John and Ponch my little cousin said "hi". I guess you had to be there, it was kinda funny..
Nice work. Click on my channel to see my 80's nostalgic collections; "80's TV Show Openings", "80's Saturday Morning Cartoons", "80's WWF Wrestling" and a "John Hughes Tribute"
The two things that I always liked about the opening credits of "CHiPs" was not only the letters "CHP" coming off the shield of the California Highway Patrol (on the motorcycle), but also the theme music that was played at the fadeout sequence as well (somewhat gives me goosebumps).
this was the business when i was eight, i used to go out on my raleigh grifter and pretend, these days kids wont know unless they are playing it in a group lobby on line while holding an ak47 and some grenades back then everything was cool, the american shows like this, bmx, VIRGIN star wars and lolo balls, thank christ i was a kid then, even lego is too 'manufactured' thhese days
PSYCH: Shawn to Guster " Were gonna miss that episode of CHIPS wher the car flips over on the highway!" Guster: "Shawn, a car flips over on every episode"
Omg..i found this series so long ....still remember after dinner i will sit in front of the small tv screen and watching this 2 charming patrol motorcycle officers...:)
oh...thanks for sharing this...finally.....i found it...
Showed my 16 year old daughter and she just couldn't believe it. Her exact words was "WOWWWW" I can't believe you watched that. lol :) I showed all the others from my teenage years....love boat....6 million dollar man and McGyver
@NoiseArtz Dear NoiseArtz, thank you so much for correcting me. I'm so grateful to have heard from one of America's foremost authorities on the subject of joking. I just adore being called an idiot. By the way the "T" in Texas is capitalized. You're always supposed to capitalize the first letter of any state, county, country... et cetera. Take care.
@JDSleeper Not just the early 80s, I remember CHiPs being rerun on syndicated networks into the early 1990s. This was totally the best TV show to catch in syndicated reruns during the 80s and early 90s, whether sick from school or duing a bored summer day.
Flashback to the late 70's. Used to like riding my bicycle back then pretending been on a motorcycle just like these. Then made a rider and a motorbike out of a Lego set I had even though there was no simple way around making such a model, because the Lego set was basic and did not cater for such a task but put my imagination at work and hey presto! it worked and it looked just like one of these characters. The intro to this series & tune is unmistakable and the baseline was excellent.
I got pulled over by a CHP on the 101 right before i was getting ready to cross the Golden Gate Bridge back in 2004....He got me for speeding and changing lanes without signaling and no seatbelt. I kinda Schmoozed him about the tv show and the tv show Real Stories Of The Highway Patrol, and he only gave me a seatbelt ticket and i got a picture with him, CHP they're alright
Used to LOVE this as a kid, seeing the intro now it looks so cringe worthy...the musics so baaad. I used to like Ponch as he was dark like me, now looking at him he looks like a right twanny....lol.

Looks like a pretty gay show. Glad I was born in the mid 80s.
