@FMX189 - Theres dozens of Vettes getting 30mpg with 400hp. There's one in specific that caught my eye on google that gets 30 mpg with 430hp. The combination of a free revving motor, light car, gearing and aerodynamics play a big role in what kind of gas mileage the Vette can accomplish. Dont think because the Europeans or Japs cant do it, that Americans cant accomplish it.

M5 isint stock cause it says it has headers exhaust and tune. Given the outcome of the race Im going to say the Vette is stock do to how close the race was. The vette edged the M5 out do to aero dynamics and weight. Consider the vette is probably around 3300 lbs and the M5 is around 4000lbs the vette has the edge even though the M5 has some mods done. The power gains for the M5 would probably put it in the 440 crank hp range which is around 370WHP The vette still has the edge...

Most people in this post could not afford the tune-up for the M5. I have serviced many 5 series BMWs and it rarely gets under 1K if done right. With the BMW M3, which is a better comparison, gives your more luxury, but the C6 offers MUCH better performance and MPG.

Don't forget these cars are in 2 different classes. Ones a sports car, they other is a sports sedan. 2 completly different classes, and the M5 held its ground pretty well.
A car length and a half or so (probably 2) is a straight up ass kicking. There was no holding ground here, the M5 was hammered. Yea, Yea its a BMW etc etc etc but when it comes to performance the Vette is the better car.
The m5 would have gained if it would have been a top speed race, despite 400 kg weight difference. It can be seen that it is gaining on the last shift.
This might be a novice question but what makes the GM LS power plants different from each other? Ls1, Ls2 and so forth.

@FMX189 - Theres dozens of Vettes getting 30mpg with 400hp. There's one in specific that caught my eye on google that gets 30 mpg with 430hp. The combination of a free revving motor, light car, gearing and aerodynamics play a big role in what kind of gas mileage the Vette can accomplish. Dont think because the Europeans or Japs cant do it, that Americans cant accomplish it.

@FMX189 Trust me it is true. I own an LS2 C6 and even with an aftermarket cam and 430WHP (almost 500 at the crank) I regularly get 33+ mpg on the highway. You have to remember that in 6th gear at 75mph Im only turning like 1400 rpm. The car is just loafing around at that point. Not to mention the aerodynamics as already stated by someone else.

M5 isint stock cause it says it has headers exhaust and tune. Given the outcome of the race Im going to say the Vette is stock do to how close the race was. The vette edged the M5 out do to aero dynamics and weight. Consider the vette is probably around 3300 lbs and the M5 is around 4000lbs the vette has the edge even though the M5 has some mods done. The power gains for the M5 would probably put it in the 440 crank hp range which is around 370WHP The vette still has the edge...

@twalker294 It is hardly a far superior car. They are in totally different categories. People looking to buy either would not consider the other. I would take a Lexus over a BMW any day. Most people in this post could not afford the tune-up for the M5. I have serviced many 5 series BMWs and it rarely gets under 1K if done right. With the BMW M3, which is a better comparison, gives your more luxury, but the C6 offers MUCH better performance and MPG.

I own a repair business and ALL of the German models are significantly more expensive to maintain and repair. Nightmares in many cases. BMW had less reported faults than Lexus. BMW was actually a full 3 ranks above Lexus on overall reliability.
