Alright so hear's the story if you're cofused. In the first film, at the end when Simba sends Scar to his death, and everyone lives happily ever after, there was a group of followers of Scar that lived in the so called Badlands. That's where Kovu comes from. But Simba's daughter Kiara falls in love with Kovu, but since Simba and Zira (Scar's followers) hate each other, they aren't allowed to see ech other. So it's kind of like Romeo and Juliet, except Kovu and Kiara and the rest of the outcasts
