What is the general cost to pull the engine out of the truck rebuild it and have it put back in? All I can say is if my 6.0 goes F.U.B.A.R it's getting shipped from New Hamphire to Georgia!
i have a 03 6liter and when i start it cold it blows blue/white smoke out of the exaust when reved above 1200 rpm and has very little power untill warm but when it finally warms up it goes away and runs like a dream please help me im stuck
Hey, i just bought my first 2005 f350 3 months ago and the other day i took off the egr valve and noticed it was damp inside so im assuming that either the oil cooler or egr cooler is failing or has failed. Now im going to follow your advice cuz i trust you more then anyone else when it comes to the 6.0 and im going to bulletproof my engine but my question is when reinstalling the heads to i have to get decked? before i install them with the new arp studs and head gaskets any help would be great
@fordpowerstroke2012 You will need to go to the Powerstrokehelp website, subscribe to the Master Mechanic's series and follow the procedures exactly to ensure success in this project. I get several 6.0s a month that folks have started on, only to get in too deep.
I thought the reason that they didnt put the 6.4 in the e-series right away was because of all the ambulance trouble they had with the 6.0 and wanted to be sure it was reliable enough for an ambulance chassis
You make an excelent point. Not all engines are created equal, I'm currently thinking of the old 1980s olds "350 diesel" LOL I'm thinking in terms of most engines but it really didn't occour to me that the 6.0 was so often a problem child from the junk yard, even with low mileage. I stand by what I say but it realy only applies in a generaly nature. You can NORMALLY do pretty well with a used diesel but apparently not the 6.0. My appologies, you know far more about them than I do.
Fair is fair, if you're going to do a used vs. remaned, present the up and downsides in both cases. Remaned, plus side, basically a brand new motor, downside, very expensive, Your example shows head surfacing, new pistons, bored cylinder, chance of cam lobe wear, polished crank minimum, new lifters, valve guides, valve job. We're not talking about a quick freshening of a 350 chevy here, were talking high dollar. used motor, they run forever, get one at 100k and get another 100 or more even.
Hey, OF COURSE a remaned engine would be better than a junk yard used motor. The only difference is money. And OF COURSE you're going to strongly recommend rebuilding them, you make money rebuilding the. But, we're not talking about gas engines, diesels usually run at least 200 and fairly often 300,000 miles. getting a used engine from the yard at 100k or so means you're probably going to get at least 80k as is. THEN I'd rebuild it. So let's be fair, we're not talking gas engines. just lots of $
@jaded16340 The comment about a junk yard engine being viable is true in most cases but I have found over and over that it does not hold true to the 6.0L powerstroke. conventional wisdom does not apply here due to the fact that if a 6.0L has been overheated one time the head gaskets can be compromised. I will not EVER install any used engine unless it is bulletproofed, bed plate resealed and the oil pan removed for inspection. I have been burnt when ever I trust anyone else's engines.
I noticed those heads are very clean. Were those heads milled? At ford we're not suppose to mill 6.0L heads since they claim the valves will potentially strike against the piston
Its a pleasure to watch your video's, your explainations are clear & concise. I've been a avid fan of your video's for a long time. Your wealth of experience & knowledge is mind-blowing. You Rock !!
I've told so many customers over the years, we don't know where it's been, how it's been driven, nothing. Many still opt for a used anyway, to save a bit. It's never worth it.
another informing video... gonna put me outta work tellin people to rebuild over buying used lol. but i will say any diesels we sell are run and tested before being pulled. any type of service or oil drilling truck is run, tested and compression tested before being pulled. If it is not good enough we find a better low Km truck/van w/e to sell. =) i enjoy your videos so keep em coming lol
Hey Bill what do you think is the Best RPM for traveling at 70 mph on a 7.3 liter diesel for best mile per gallon and engine/transmission longevity. Thanks again for your vids.

After working in auto dealerships for the last 13 years, I've learned one sad fact: 99% of technicians can't communicate. I wish they explained in such detail and clarity as you do. I'd learn a lot more daily. Thanks again for a great vid!
@PAPABEAR0326 There is no set mileage to bulletproof the 6.0. I would install the Engine Damage Avoidance System and when it goes off all the time then call us to do the bulletproof. Don't spend the money until you have to.
Never a mention about using a pre-luber before stating the engine, and how it contributes to engine longevity. Oh well.
seapeddler 2 weeks ago
@seapeddler The diesels move so much oil at start up a pre luber will only have value on a truck that sits for long periods of time.

@thedieselman78 that may be true but it is a significantly larger engine that would have required reengineering the cab.
